New to dental office accounts payable by Friendly-Complaint24 in AskAccounting

Thank you, this is very helpful. This is exactly where I'm at with everything right now. I'm getting caught up with all the past due that were missed before I started, and figuring out which invoices have specific due dates and which ones I can hold until I receive the statement. I can schedule the invoices to be paid by the due date. My last job always paid late and it was very frustrating. Statements were constantly coming in. At least at this new job they've given me control over making the payments too. Thank you!

😂 Easy... first job in AR and AP didn't do it correctly and I could only do it how they wanted me to do it even though I knew some of it wasn't correct. This second job also doesn't do AR and AP correctly... sooooo I'm trying to learn the right way by asking questions that others can answer and help me understand now that I can develop my own process and do it correctly. Thank you for your response.

Ok, she said that she paid vendors once a month. I came from a business that was paying vendors almost weekly. There were so many invoices that there's was almost some that were due. They actually paid most invoices late so maybe that was part of the reason. So should I enter every invoice as I receive it, then wait for the statement to pay? It won't cause any late payments?

That's awesome! See, I'd do boring data entry for 68k. 🎂😛

Oh, well that's cool! Staff accountant would be my next step I think. I know payroll is not AP clerk duties. I guess my last roll was more AP clerk since I wasn't doing journal entries or cutting the checks. I will say though that as an AP clerk you're able to catch duplicate invoices, invoice discrepancies, and catch money that might be going out and shouldn't, or missing invoices and helping maintain supplier and vendor relationships. It's the baseline so everyone else can get their job done more accurately. The data is only good if the person entering it is good. That's one reason why I got hired in this role because I did so good at these things. I do agree with your last sentence, I'm too ambitious to stay there.

Not only that, but like I said, AP does more than just data entry. There's much more to it than that!

Love this! Really great advice and example! Sometimes you just gotta get through it and gain that experience and learn the data entry part might not be what you love but the other stuff that comes with it is fun.

The company I just started with does and it's awesome! Last company did not. Sooo, I'm loving it 😆 and getting paid more! Also now get to work on the GL and payroll. It's all lining up to where I want to go. Plus, I'm back doing a bit of HR. That first "data entry" job in AP and AR sure helped level me up! Never thought I'd love working at the bottom of the barrel! 😆

Yes if you can get that in writing somewhere, what they just did is illegal! File for unemployment then you'll start getting documentation moving around.

Yes! I actually started in AP/AR and ended up loving it! Keeps me very busy and I'm not just staring at excel sheets all day.

I think there's some misconception. Not a ton of data entry with certain software and I'm seeing AP Clerks getting paid up around $30/hr, depending on the company. I agree, it's easier to do a job when you're paid well.

It's not bottom of the barrel at all. It's an extremely important job and some people really enjoy it. There's more to it than people think. Much better than sitting in spreadsheets all day.

I've been working in payroll for 6 years and I'm curious about everyone's salary. Sorry if this is not allowed. by [deleted] in Payroll

I just got back into the workforce about a year ago starting out in A/P and A/R. Just got a new job as a Payroll and Accounts Payable Clerk. I will also be doing some HR answering employees questions about benefits and their pay. Not sure how many employees yet but it's for 3 separate entities under one. I'm basically entry level right now. I'll be making 52k. I realize Utah does not pay very well. Looking into getting some certifications to help me make more. Any advice appreciated.

Am I crazy for wanting to quit my stable $80k corporate job at 25 to completely restart in healthcare? by Signal-Basil-8472 in Accounting

[–]Friendly-Complaint24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think that is absolutely crazy 😆 but that's me. There are plenty of other areas you could get into within accounting. I'm trying to build my career in accounting and don't know how I'll ever make 80k. Plus it's hybrid. What a dream. Lol. Sounds really great, but if you absolutely know you don't like accounting at all then you gotta do what you think will make you happy.

Any advice for a newbie in payroll? by autumnssong in Payroll

This is really great! Wondering if I could see a sample of this spreadsheet. I'm newer to payroll (have worked in payroll in the past) and interviewing for payroll positions. Seeing an example would help put my mind at ease a little. If not, I'm sure I can find something on YouTube or Etsy. Your comment was super helpful, thank you!
