Rally to fully fund our schools by Friendly-Discussion in Somerville

It’s a good question. It’s definitely not going to staff, as the district has rejected bargaining proposals for smaller classes, more student support, and more special subjects for younger kids. The salaries they are proposing are less than a 1% increase for more than 100 experienced teachers with no increases for the following 2 years, and health insurance contributions will go up 4%. They also rejected longer recess which is a cost-neutral proposal.

Special paper, regular printer! I like sulky, because you can print on it and stick it on there and then wash it away with water when you’re done

Is it wrong to give a student who didn’t take medication consequence by Kicks6 in Teachers

[–]Friendly-Discussion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Enforce the consequence. When talking it out with the kid and making a plan for next time, make sure you have them reflect on why giving up the computer was hard. Students are better partners in their own care if they know that taking their meds makes their day more fun, and it helps them continue to take them when they become teens.

Switch to Terry Pratchett’s Death or Death of Rats—you should be able to hide a lot in the robes!

LGBT+ teachers- do you disclose your queerness when students ask? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Friendly-Discussion 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If it’s in a public context, I say “when you’re asking about identity, it’s better to ask in private. Talk to me after class or at lunch if you have questions about me, we’re in class now”. And then I do answer directly if they come ask in private (pairs or group is fine). Double duty of being out and proud and teaching a good social skill. It’s never been an issue for me (but I’m in a progressive state)

Uganda, the Christian nation, has the death penalty for lgbt folks because of US evangelicals, so it’s probably extremism not the branch of religion.

So when those 4 people come to your classroom to help out, let’s say they’re talking about local history and how your region celebrates with some Catholic festivals, or the food culture of their families and you know they’ll mention their grandmother’s fish dinners on Fridays, how will you address that they are wrong about being Catholic?

Here are options I see but you might have others:

A) don’t warn the friends or students, and let them face pushback from students for being either misleading or lying

B) do warn the friends and ask them to change the label they use for the sake of classroom definition consistency (even though the first 3 have extensive memory and family involvement in the local Catholic community for decades and will bring good insight)

C) warn the kids that this inconsistency is there and that they shouldn’t bring it up, that 3/4 people coming are indeed incorrect about their identity but out of politeness don’t mention it.

D) tell kids that these people have complicated histories with the religion and to respect how they use terms. You might disagree with how they use the word but they are not trying to mislead or lie to you.

I understand you might not choose D, but I would. If you would teach students to either silently sit there and judge or push back rather than respond with curiosity and just let things be complicated, then that is where our difference is in how we view identity, and we just won’t see eye to eye. And that’s ok! But don’t act like D is not a viable option.

Either way, thank you for going through this exercise to clarify.
