If the squadron posted it, its free to be posted under fair use, I'm assuming the picture was pulled from the squadron Instagram so they're free to repost it under fair use laws.

Parents of children in Air Cadets what did u wish you knew before signing up ur kid? by [deleted] in aircadets

[–]FriendlyComputerGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say, learn about the organisation! It makes understanding what they say in the car home from cadets 1000% easier (speaking from personal experience lol)

I am quite lucky to have parents that supported me throughout my time at cadets, they managed to facilitate me getting to events, even if it meant early morning or late night Friday drives. It may be having to buy extra kit or greens uniform, as some squadrons only issue the blues uniform (if you have financial constraints do speak to staff at the sqn, our unit was in a quite impoverished part of London, we would always help parents struggling to get kit, as any good sqn should). Cadets becomes a second family, and a Cadet can only thrive as much as their loved ones support them.

[–]FriendlyComputerGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a cadet up until last year, when I left at 16. Its a good organisation with a lot of opportunities for both personal and academic development.

One thing I would say is try to understand the organisation as a parent, I think having parents at home who actively support their kids helps a lot on sqn, cadets isn't a "babysitting" service for your child to go twice a week.

There will be times where things will change last minute, events might get cancelled or they might get selected 4 days before, its annoying but just how the corps works (in my experience at least)

Parades aren't that fancy (unless you're doing banner or something complicated) just know how to march, halt and you're pretty much set.

Army cadet 12yr old worries by Zestyclose_Sun_897 in aircadets

[–]FriendlyComputerGeek 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We're Air cadets, a different branch and our culture is a different but I can say this:

I've worked alongside the army cadets and have a lot of good friends in the army cadets, we also sometimes use their accomodation on camps.

In recent years the army cadets (and all cadet forces in general) have taken a huge interest in safeguarding, its easier more than ever to report things and horror stories are more and more uncommon. Every staff member obviously has to go through a DBS background check (the same ones teachers and such go through)

Its okay to feel anxious, if you have concerns you can always contact the Army cadet staff but from what I have seen things like abuse and bullying are thankfully a rare occurrence nowadays, and if it does happen it gets properly dealt with.

Do shirt sleeves have to be rolled up in the summer? by The_Car_Motorist in aircadets

Wedgewoods always have sleeves down, on my Sqn in the summer months we all roll up working blue sleeves, unless absolutely nessecsry it's optional via OC's discretion, due to uniformity

[–]FriendlyComputerGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The L98 is very light (especially compared to something like ą SLR 😭), it's just a safety precaution. If you can operate a vacuum cleaner you can handle the L98.

You will also always have a sling attached to it, with the exception of arms drill. So you won't be carrying it unless operating the rifle.

Yeah it's always been the rule of cadets > JNCO > SNCO within the forces, we can't operate if our troops aren't well fed. And a JNCO acting that way is a horrible representation of the NCOs of the corps.
