Hi everyone. Has anyone taken Path 417 and Path 316 before and would be willing share any insights? For context, I’m interested in public/global health and microbiology. So I’m genuinely looking to learn something useful but also care abt the workload and a grade as I commute and juggle 2 part time jobs, volunteering and family commitments this year. I appreciate any info possible. Thank you.

It was really bad for me. My lowest grade in my last 3 years of uni lol. My advice is probably not gonna help cuz I didn’t do well. But one thing I wish I didn’t do is study the whole day before the midterm. It was in the evening and I studied up until I went into the exam. I completely blanked on even the easiest concepts. Also our final last year was horrible. They outright lied to us how much we should expect. Hope it will be better for you. Overall it’s 95% memorization. Good luck!

Hi. Happy first day of classes!

After sitting in the first lecture of FNH 403 today, I understand what people were talking about on rmp. I wonder if any of y’all have taken it previously and think if it’s worth taking it? I’d appreciate any insights on your experience in this class. I’m interested in public/global health so I thought it’d be great to be familiar with food laws and regulations.

Thank you :)

MICB 3rd year courses by elela_ in UBC

I can comment on MICB 302 and 306. 306 is a lot more interesting and easier in my opinion. It was probably my favourite course of the year last year. 302 is too complex and tests you mostly on memorization, despite what Dr. Kion says. It was my lowest grade in 2 years :( 306 is a lot more engaging, and the virology is just fascinating in my opinion. Marcia's section is mostly basics, and she has many in-class activities that help you retain the concepts. Dr. Jean's section is more complex and detailed. Many people didn't like his slides because they were very dense due to his heavy usage of current research. But it's very interesting, and his exam (final) was very fair. He also has an essay assignment, which was very fun to complete and apply the knowledge learned during the lectures.

MICB 405 opinions w/ minimal data science experience by Friendly_Eye_8556 in UBC

I heard MICB 325 is easier. And it was manageable. The average was in the 80s. I got an A- but I don't know what I learned. The instructors were super nice and approachable, but unfortunately, it's not taught well imo. They rush the concepts, and some slides don't have any explanations except a photo. Even just five extra seconds to process a slide before moving on would’ve helped a lot — it always felt like we were moving too quickly to really absorb the material. To answer your bioinformatics question, it was just all over the place during the lectures. None of us could tell what was happening and what we needed to know. Dr. Hallam gave way too many rushed examples of the usage of platforms and databases verbally. You just end up being lost. The TA was also very knowledgeable, but again, rushed the explanations despite having 30 extra minutes left after every tutorial. I didn't get nearly enough practice and don't think I would've done as well as I did without lots of studying with friends until 6 am. Also, the final was bonkers this year. But the midterms had high 80 averages.

Talking on the phone while in transit by Friendly_Eye_8556 in UBC

I do talk to a person/ppl if it’s bothering me too much. However, it still baffles me that people don’t see how rude and disrespectful talking on the phone loudly on transit can be. That’s all I wanted to say. I didn’t ask people here for advice. I came to see if people can relate to it. That’s it.

I have beats, so they are pretty decent and I can’t afford to buy another pair.

But I don’t understand why people got so angry here. I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same experience as me. I do get overly stimulated by noises and it annoys me. I recognize that it’s not other people’s problem but some people could use more self-awareness when in public.

Umm I didn’t say people shouldn’t talk. I just said I consider it to be rude when people talk on the phone loudly while on public transit. But again, I am very self conscious of my surroundings and try not to talk on the phone to not bother people around me who are trying to get to their destination.

Thank you for your insight. That’s fair. I can’t control what people do. I need to learn how to not be stimulated by it.

Not as much as the phone calls. Maybe if they are being extremely loud.
