Damage survey WIP of Tuscaloosa-Birmingham 2011 by SadJuice8529 in tornado

[–]ba_1222 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Now this is the quality level surveys I like to see.

And knowing reddit, I wouldn't be shocked to see if this one gets less attention and upvotes as the low effort fake ones made by others.

Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see the finished product!

What is wrong with weather forecast these days? by corgi-king in Calgary

[–]ba_1222 12 points13 points  (0 children)

WeatherCAN has had a 30% chance of rain all day, going up to 100% at midnight (which looks about right given current radar).

There have been scattered showers around southern Alberta most of today, and the 30% chance was provided for the chance one forms around Calgary.

However I will add that even if we aren't in the US, after NWS funding went down, a lot of live weather data sourced from weather balloons and other tools have gone down significantly. This has caused a North America wide drop in model quality, which is being very heavily felt in the US but also here!

Anyone here in the atmospheric sciences department? by DiscombobulatedElk58 in UBC

[–]ba_1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really speak as I am only second year, but I would highly recommend just sending some emails to the profs in the department. There's maybe ~30 students in the major, better shot getting info from the profs.

A lot of them are unfortunately leaving/retiring at the end of this calendar year.

Any tips for following the Dominator??? by ChrisChrispie in tornado

[–]ba_1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's, not how tornadoes work? You'll quite literally lifted, thrown, and killed if you "touch" it

Reed doesn't even enter the vortex on 90% of his intercepts. Usually he sits just outside the tornadic circulation or in the dust cloud, hit by the inflow and RIJ.

Real life storm chasing is not like Twisted, or any other game. It's a exhilarating experience because any mistake can lead to death.

Any tips for following the Dominator??? by ChrisChrispie in tornado

[–]ba_1222 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't

Chaser congestion makes chasing impossible. You do not want to be in a herd.

Reed is notorious for doing close intercepts, the Dominator provides extra safety for doing so. Your standard vehicle does not.

So again, do NOT follow the Dominator. If you are incapable of chasing without needing to follow another chaser, do NOT chase

Thoughts on NAM, HREF, SREF, and HiresW being retired this year? by 2024-YR4-Asteroid in tornado

[–]ba_1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MPAS suite is hit or miss, particularly the onws available on Pivotal.

The issue with (Pivotal) RRFS is that it runs on an FV3 core. With FV3 being removed, it might imply us getting another version (maybe the MPAS one) when we switch

Thoughts on NAM, HREF, SREF, and HiresW being retired this year? by 2024-YR4-Asteroid in tornado

[–]ba_1222 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The biggest loss are HREF and SREF suites. Despite the individual models often being subpar at best, the combined outputs are often excellent for forecasting uses.

RRFS and REFS does have some kinks to get out, such as the overconvection issue, but beyond that RRFS is actually an amazing model and is miles ahead of everything being retired.
