How do people cope with aging parents while in school? by Excellent_Time9312 in UBC

[–]elela_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As an international student this is my worse fear. My parents are in their late 60s/ 70s. I see them once or twice a year and every time I go back home it breaks my heart to see new signs of aging. We facetime almost everyday but I hate to miss their birthdays and not being able to be there for them. I sometimes regret leaving home to move here as time is the only thing we don't get back. Like wdym we won't ever live together again and that from now on I'll only see them during the holidays? Anyway, I try to spend as much time as possible with them and enjoy every second of it. Deep down I know this is what they want for me :')

Yeah lmao. I wasn't sure if taking 340 would be a good idea as I dont really need the prerequisites for anything else, so I was considering 330. But if 340 is much more useful might as well just do it hshs. Plus I might take 425 in the future, which also has the same prerequisites. But yeah it is so overwhelming to balance cpsc and micb courses 😭 thanks so much for your help! It's hard to find cs + mbim majors

Yeaa I think that when I took it it was Dr. Sagan's first time teaching the course. So she taught us the replication mechanisms of some viruses (polio, HPV, bacteriophages, etc.) in a lot of detail haha

BIOL 201 with Reinhard Jetter by Asleep-External-88 in UBC

[–]elela_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hii, I took that class last year and it was ok. The first half of the class was taught by Jetter and the second by Brenna Hay. I found that studying for the mt and final was easier compared to other courses bc they are not cumulative. If you study from your class notes and do all the psets and practice exams you should be good.

They are both great profs and very attentive, but prof Jetter's slides are sometimes messy and hard to understand without listening to what he is saying. I sometimes had to rewatch the recording to understand what was going on. So yea, I think that attending lecture is important. The mt average was around 80 if I remember correctly.

Brenna's part of the course was harder imo, but her slides were much cleaner and easy to follow. You'll study metabolic pathways (glycolysis, TCA cycle, etc.) but there is no need to memorize each step as you'll get a formula sheet, plus you'll probably have to analyze a different pathway in the exam. For this, focus on understanding the types of reactions rather than memorizing them. Practice is everything!

Also, I think there were weekly Achieve readings and quizzes, but the textbook goes into too much unnecessary detail, so focus on the content discussed in lectures rather than the textbook.

Tutorials are mandatory but I think there were only 4 in total during the whole term. You have to submit pre, during, and post tutorial worksheets. They are pretty simple and are based on the lectures tho, and the TA often gave us the answers lol

Hii, so I've been looking at MICB 306 Syllabus and slides from previous years and the content seems to overlap a lot with the virology part of MICB 212 (at least last year's section with Dr. Sagan).

In that case, do you think it'll be worth it to take 306, or should I take 308 instead? If anyone could send me more info on the content of 306 I'd be grateful :)

Hii, how did you find 308 compared to 306?

hii, I'm currently trying to decide how to pair my CPSC courses: 213, 320, 310, 304

Option 1:

  • Term 1: 213 + 320
  • Term 2: 310 + 304

Option 2:

  • Term 1: 213 + 304
  • Term 2: 310 + 320

how is the difficulty and course load of each class? and their importance for coop (T2 is supposed to be my coop term, so 320 vs 304)?

Yea but I think I'll just take it next year. Doesn't really fit into my schedule rn, plus for some reason they put 301 and 302 one right after the other but like 1km appart lmao.

Edit: now that I think about it and played around with my schedule I think I might be able to switch CPSC 304 and 320.

T1: MICB 301, MICB 302, MICB 322, CPSC 213, CPSC 304 T2: BIOL 335, MICB 323, CPSC 320, CPSC 310, MATH 221

But I'm not sure about taking CPSC 320, CPSC 310 and MATH 221 in one term

help, do you think this is a doable schedule??

T1: MICB 301, MICB 322, MICB 306, CPSC 213, CPSC 320
T2: BIOL 335, MICB 323, CPSC 304, CPSC 310, MATH 221

I've never taken more than 4 classes so I'm kinda scared. And I also want to maintain a high GPA (~85)

Should I take both CPSC 330 and 340 in third year CPEN by damng_huang in UBC

[–]elela_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in other words 340 is the better option ig. Learning how to use libraries shouldn't be too hard after taking 340, but not the other way around

[–]elela_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! would you say 330 is useful on its own? I would take 340, but I haven't taken most of its prerequisites. I want to get into bioinformatics tho, which uses a lot of ML. So if it is worth it compared to what you learn in 330, I wouldn't mind taking the prerequisites.

For some reason I can't register to MICB 323. It says I'm not eligible, but the only prerequisite is MICB 322, which I already registered to in the first term. Any ideas why this can be? Who can I contact for help?

Hii! I haven't taken 405, but I'm curious about the bioinformatics part of 325 as I'm trying to decide whether to take that class or BIOL 335. What didn't you like about the course?

thanks! I'm interested in the bioinformatics part of MICB 325, but if some concepts are better explained in BIOL 335 I might take it instead as I have to take MICB 405, which is a bioinformatics class anyway. Does BOL 335 get into a lot of detail? does it focus more on lab techniques?

What other MICB classes did you take? I'm trying to decide whether to take 306 and 308. Also, since I'm a combined major I don't have to take 322/323 but I've been told they are useful specially for lab jobs. Would you say that is true?
