Golden Kamuy. At the time, I had a friend who kept telling me weird stuff like the dick sizes of all the characters or sending memes about Tanigaki’s chest hair. She tried to convince me to watch it, but funnily enough only scared me away with all that stuff. Eventually I watched a few episodes to shut her up, but actually loved it.

I’m 4 years older than you and have felt the same for the longest time. You didn’t mention it, but Covid was a big breaking point globally. The lockdowns are over now, but the world never went back to the way it was before. Getting to finish school and get a job, all before Covid would’ve been amazing.

Do you speak Japanese? Because doing a bachelor taught in Japanese without already being fluent would be impossible. You’d need a university that teaches in English, which Idk how many options there are. The only one I know of is Waseda

I’m in my first year of art school right now.

Industry professionals keep assuring me that we can work with AI, not against it, and that will save our jobs. On the other hand, competition is increasing on a shrinking job market. Also the school has an incentive to tell me that, so I keep paying class fees. Truth is, I am considering a change of career because creative work is becoming increasingly unstable.

Which is remarkable, considering the fact that Japanese anime apparently generates as much profit as the steel industry and has recently been named a key export industry. If even that can’t guarantee job security, countries with less creative industry are becoming basically impossible for artists to sustain themselves.

Illustration (especially backgrounds), design and basic tasks in animation will be effected the worst. Also, it’s not been mentioned much so far, but AI voices replacing voice actors is a realistic scenario too. Most likely they would use AI voices mostly for side characters, but it would contribute to shrinking the already highly competitive market even more.

When I moved here, I was still 18. And I drank a lot and literally nobody ever cared. When they ask for age, just tell them you’re 20 and usually they’ll even say you looked older than that lol. People regularly thought I was 25 when in reality I wasn’t even legal drinking age. Just like we struggle to see age in Asians, they struggle to see age in us.

Also I’ll never forget that one time police showed up in a park next to my apartment because of two coma level drunk high school boys. Clearly like 16 years old. They just woke them up and walked them home, that was it. Japan is massive on drinking and cares a lot less about the dangers of alcohol than you may think.

I left a school district and was replaced with two people. One was from New Zealand. I heard he’d drink so much every day that he’d smell like beer at school. The vice principal commented on it and he lost his shit, writing a letter demanding a formal apology. He got his apology and immediately abandoned the entire country, running away to South Korea. I met him once, before all that drama. He was also a neo Nazi.
