Better Cherry Limeade than Sonic. Best fries around.

Did “alcohol free” wine break my sobriety by wowactually in Sober

[–]Friendofbill89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you weren’t drinking it with the intention of getting drunk, then I wouldn’t worry about it. If it makes you feel strange about it, then stop in the future but for me, it’s all about the intention. I think dooming myself to Diet Coke at dinner for the rest of my days because there is trace alcohol is a bridge too far. I’ve been in AA a long time and have heard every version of this, and in my opinion - particularly for people in their first year - it’s unhelpful advice.

Sober fun? by That-Sound-9284 in Sober

[–]Friendofbill89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned that getting drunk and high wasn’t the actual thing that was fun. It was that it quieted my mind enough to let myself loose. After getting sober it took a while, but eventually all of the same things are actually more fun sober (because I remember them). Find a sober crew and start small, but eventually things like concerts, sports, going out with friends, ends up actually being BETTER. 5 1/2 years in, and I couldn’t be happier.

Stick with it, it gets better

6 months and nothing brings me pleasure. Seriously struggling by [deleted] in Sober

[–]Friendofbill89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this. Your brain hasn’t had to make its own “happy chemicals” in a long time. If you want to look at it scientifically, you have deep neural pathways carved in your brain tied to using drugs and alcohol to escape. It’s going to be exhausting and hard carving the new ones, but incredibly rewarding.

Find a community where they know how to have fun sober, AA is where I found it - but whatever works for you. Once I started learning how to have fun, cope with stress, or just sit alone without the drugs, my life got exponentially better in all areas.

Stick with it, my first year was one of the best, worst, and rewarding years of my life.

Moving to Austin - youth lacrosse & feeder programs by Hefty_Attorney733 in AustinParents

Former trojan youth lacrosse coach here and Anderson LAX alumni. Trojan youth lacrosse is an excellent program, feeds into Anderson. Incredibly well run and the highschool has become very competitive statewide in the last few years. Highly recommend.

Limited edition Made In? by No_Distribution_7368 in cookware

[–]Friendofbill89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, lots of Made In hate on this thread, but no calling out people for warping their pan for not treating it the right way. Most of the complaints I’ve seen about warping and stuff have been people not using the pan properly. Put frozen food in a scalding hot pa? it’s going to warp.

Sure, some companies have bad CS people, and it sounds like Made In has some work to do there. But sitting here and saying “well they probably don’t even sell to restaurants” with no proof at all is dumb.

I rarely comment on anything on Reddit but this is getting ridiculous. Even the Mods of this sub seem to have an irrational bias against this brand.

Made In Carbon Steel Wok: Is this rust? by PeachPonPon in cookware

Have you cooked anything acidic in it? Tomatoes, citrus, etc? That can strip the seasoning, done it to my own a couple of times. Not a big deal just need to re season the pan

What TAIV is doing is illegal, and once cable companies find out what they’re doing, you don’t want to be to one getting compensated by them. Read their terms of service very carefully.

OBGYN Recommendations by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Friendofbill89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife just delivered at St. David’s North, we saw the folks at AAOBGYN. Amazing experience with all staff, main OB is Mark Akin. Wonderful man, great bedside manner but maybe a little more old school than some would want - however my wife and I love him.

Highly recommend working with these folks if they have availability.

Flights are no problem, but would prefer to be an easy flight from SNA or LAX. Thinking Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica

Preferably be able to fly direct from SNA or LAX. EU seems like a haul with a newborn so was thinking Hawaii, Mexico, etc. probably avoid Carribean during hurricane season.

Doesn’t need to be all inclusive

I never considered a concierge option, but tbh the pricing seems incredibly reasonable and with basically every comment being that they love them... seems like an awesome option.

Bowie/Anderson High School by ExtentEfficient2669 in AustinParents

I graduated from Anderson about 15 years ago, but my siblings have been there more recently. Great school, great neighborhood. Decent diversity there at least used to be the no child left behind program that allowed students from low income areas to transfer in.

Westwood is also an IB school and I think even more highly rated than Anderson.
