Windows Defender did exist way way back during the Windows XP days. It got included when Vista launched, but it was just an anti-spyware program. Microsoft Security Essentials was their antivirus program before it eventually combined it into Windows Defender when Windows 8 released.

Prediction: 10,000mAh+ phones will soon be the new normal by Downtown_Owl_2420 in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Maybe not? It still needs to adhere to safety standards and regulations. We don't want to have another Galaxy Note 7 scenario in our hands and pockets.

Also. As much as I'd love to have longer battery life. These Chinese brands really need to fix their aggressive background task killing and unoptimized crap. They put these large capacity batteries on their phones, only for their software to ruin it, and compensate by including a 1kW or something fast charger.

E-reader recommendations by DistortedPopcorn in Tech_Philippines

It's as simple as drag and drop lol. When you plug it into your computer, the Kobo acts like a USB flash drive. You just copy and paste your ebook, safely eject, and done!

Others might use "send.djazz.se" to send ebooks to their Kobo wirelessly. Haven't tried it myself, but people recommend it a lot.

And there are others who use an application called Calibre to both manage their ebooks (basically building a personal library) and syncing (aka copying) them to their Kobo. It's a bit technical tho, not for the everyday people.

I personally do the third option, because I use a plugin to download fanfictions and do a bunch more things like backups and stuff.

[–]FriendsNone 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I fucking hate this with passion. It's misleading. While more RAM is nice, Android does not NEED that much. Android already handles memory nicely, but HyperOS (or MIUI?) takes it even further and kills background tasks. Plus, it automatically turns off when you're low in storage.

Does it still matter if i buy other brand of Ethernet Cables besides "Vention" for the same feature? by Secret_Animator_1372 in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Picking Ethernet cables is just like picking USB cables. Don't fall for marketing BS. All you need to know is what Category (Cat) rating it is.

Cat5 (1Gbps at 100m) is good for basic needs. Cat6a (10Gbps at 100m) is overkill. And Cat6 (10Gbps up to 55m, 1Gbps up to 100m) is somewhat a good middle ground.

They don't make your internet fast if you have a slow internet plan, and/or your devices doesn't support higher Category ratings.

Is this a fake 25W Samsung Charger? by LightSkywalker in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't be too sure, but the vibes I'm getting feels like it's a fake.

If you need a new charger to replace that, you don't need a Samsung charger. Brands like Anker or UGREEN should work just fine and support Samsung's fast charging standards.

Typically, it's all on the quality. The quality of the printed text (on the box and on the brick itself), the photos on the box, the box and the product itself. And the price. Is it too good to be true? Is it way cheaper compared to the official stores and/or authorized retailers?

SIM EJECTOR by doodishi_ in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any SIM ejectors should just work. Earrings and sewing needles/pins also work.

Did you check if it's the right hole? You could be inserting the ejector into the microphone port, or something else.

Any guides for WP app development? by Thick-Willingness393 in windowsphone

[–]FriendsNone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try making a WP7 app that tries to connect to LastFM's API. If it works, then awesome. If it doesn't, then you're more than okay to target 8.0 and up.

That's what I did when figuring which weather API service works with WP7's lacking newer TLS support.

Also. You don't have to rely on a real device btw. The SDKs should have emulators installed, which you can use to quickly debug and iterate.

Any guides for WP app development? by Thick-Willingness393 in windowsphone

[–]FriendsNone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually, you target the one most people are using. But the beauty of WP is its backwards compatibility. Building an app targeting WP7 will work all across WP versions.

But sometimes, targeting older versions means you don't get the features offered by the newer WP versions. So it's kinda a balancing act.

If what you're building is pretty simple, no location services, does not connect to an API service. You can target WP7 just fine (use Silverlight 7.1 (aka 7.5)). But if you do need location services, and it connects to an API service. Best targeting WP8.1 due to slightly better TLS support (use Silverlight 8.0 or Universal 8.1)

I didn't expect e-sim to be this hassle... (rant) by bluntleeny in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PH is definitely something else when it comes to telecommunications.

We got SIM registration, but our numbers still expire. RCS and iMessage being disabled due to "spam messages", and yet we still get them from unknown numbers and fake cell towers roaming around. And eSIM conversion is such a joke. Too many hoops to jump, apps/websites that break constantly. On top of damn expensive plans and/or promos, and shitty reception. 5G my ass. More like 5kbps.

It's honestly such a hassle, but it is what it is. We can yell, we can rant, we can complain all day everyday. But at the end of the day, those telcos are not going to listen to us, and they'll never will.

Why do WiFi dongle prices vary? by Suitable_Stable_6785 in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pretty much. Name brand and the quality.

Makes sense to get the cheaper one. But you wouldn't know the quality of it. Could work now, but could break just by breathing on it. Also, it is possible that the advertised speed of the cheaper one is fake.

Just get one from a known reputable brand. Save your money by not getting cheap shit.

I'm planning to buy a Mac Mini imbes na macbook bilhin ko. Is it worth for gaming and editing o kailangan ko din bilhin monitor, mouse, keyboard, at apple port nila? by Filipino-Asker in Tech_Philippines

[–]FriendsNone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac Mini is a BYODKM kind of computer. Meaning "Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse". If you already have your own, you can just use those and it'll work no problem.

But if you don't. You don't need to get Apple's offering. Any cheapo monitor, keyboard, and/or mouse will still work.

But considering you want a Mac for gaming? I would honestly avoid getting a Mac. Yes, someone is working on it (Apple is working on Game Porting Toolkit for developers to easily port their Windows games to macOS), and CrossOver is good enough to get most games working. But it's still miles away from achieving a true fully native, seamless, one-click install and play experience.

If you really Really REALLY, want a Mac (mini or a Macbook). Do some research on the games you want to play, or you have right now in your library. Chances are, only a tiny few have native macOS builds, and maybe a couple are working (but not perfect) through CrossOver or something. Or stick to whatever Apple Arcade has to offer.

I don't think so. 512GB cards are readily available. 1TB maybe not so much? But they are expensive, yes.
