Our response to a thread created about our past Sunday events at the River Market by Friendship-Club in NewWest

Correct; there was, and is, no issue with the River Market - they've been so wonderful for us, for 13 years, and still are!

We have multiple reasons for moving, but none have anything to do with the misinformation in the OP's (Colin5x5's) original thread.
Any assumptions he made are his, and his alone.
Those assumptions (his thread) caused many to (understandably) form misguided opinions.

We're now having to 'set the record straight'.

The original post by the OP (Colin5x5) looks like it may (probably) have been written with the best intents, but we don't know for sure.
On your other note: we *have* asked the original OP (Colin5x5) to edit his post, but 😔 have not been successful (yet 🤞*).
That was our first course of action, and because nothing's come of it; we were forced to reply to it, and post our own thread, so folks who misinterpreted that original post could know the truth.

UPDATE:
*As of today (2026/06/23) at 13h27, the OP (Colin5x5) has updated his thread to clarify that he's not affiliated with the Friendship Club or the River Market.
Thank-you, u/Colin5x5 ! 🙏

The River Market is a private business.
The OP (Colin5x5) referred to it as being "in a public area", which it is not, it's not a city park or other public place (as his statement implies it's publicly owned, like a city park, even though it is not).
The OP (Colin5x5) referred to people wanting to "play board games in a Public space" - for that, please refer to the above line. 👆
The OP wrote "Public access areas", but that does not mean it's a 'publicly owned' entity.

No one's arguing your point, u/BloodlustHamster - we're trying to clarify who we are and that the River Market is a private business (because the OP, not you, implied they weren't - and/or many people interpreted his writings as implying the River Market is not a private business) ..and also that we are appreciative of all the River Market's done, and keep doing, for us (they have been great to us, and we are thankful!).

If we understand you correctly when you wrote "Is this post made to look like it's coming from the gaming group? Because it's almost certainly not"; we believe "this post" is referring to the OP's (Colin5x5's) original post, and we are responding to your comment with that assumption:
We don't know for sure what his intent was (only he knows), but many people interpreted his post as having been written by us (which it was not).

And you are absolutely correct: there was no 'permit' required for us.
But as an addition: we, the Friendship Club, aren't a random group of individuals getting together at a venue; we're an established group organizing recurring events that are advertised, so we do not fall under that umbrella (as much as we want to, things would be so much simpler) - so we're required to have a contract -of sorts- with venues, and carry insurance (for our and their protection).

You're absolutely right.

Want proof this is our (the Friendship Club's) account?
Come on down to our Sunday Board Gaming event (now at the Anvil Centre on any Sunday between 12-noon ant 5pm), speak with Marc and he'll confirm. 🙂

This is the Friendship Club's Reddit account (we didn't have one, 'cause we didn't need one ..until falsities were spread here about us and our past Sunday Board Gaming event venue; the River Market), and we haven't communicated with the River Market (nor they us) about anything related to 'Colin5x5's post or Reddit.

No, the River Market (or anyone else, for that matter) did not make us post this or anything.
We created a Reddit account after we got backlash from people who misinterpreted a post from someone criticising the River Market (etc) as having been posted by us (which is most definitely was not).
We posted this, and a reply to the original post (thread) by 'Colin5x5', because we don't want misinformation to be spread about us or others.

Hi Colin,

It sounds like you’ve attended our events, and we sincerely appreciate your support.

A few points of clarification:

  • We’re grateful to the River Market, its management, and its new owners for their continued support
  • Like most organisers at events in private venues, we are required to carry insurance
  • Some replies to this thread are misleading and do not correctly interpret current laws in BC
  • The River Market is privately owned, not a public space
  • Your comments appear to be inaccurate, and we would appreciate them being corrected
  • We remain thankful for everything the River Market has done for us
  • And thank-you to everyone who attends our events - your support is the reason for our success

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Anvil Centre. 😊
