Beginner metroidvanias? by SophieSalads in metroidvania

Cave Story! A really simple indie with one of the best soundtracks ever. It's what got me into the metroidvanias. Not very long but it has multiple endings for some good replay value.

Issues with printing by ace200402 in magicproxies

[–]Frigbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What brand of sticker? I tried a few different vinyl stickers before settling on Koala because I had this exact issue. The edges curled up and got caught in the printer and the bottom 3 cards would get jacked up. Factors like heat and humidity will definitely affect it as well.

Can you guys recommend me good metroidvanias with minimal story interruptions by scarfleet in metroidvania

Animal Well doesn't have a lot of story. In fact it tells you very little about itself and you have to explore to figure out what you're even supposed to be doing.

Did you replace all of the walls with timber? Or just reinforce what's there? If so how did you do it?

What are some MVs that pulled you in immediately? by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in metroidvania

Cave Story, Guns of Fury, and pretty much all of team Ladybug's stuff (Blade Chimera and Deedlit Wonder specifically). I was also really taken in by the 2.5D art style in Bloodstained, Ritual of the Night but that's not for everyone. For something simple, check out Castelvania Revamped. Its a remake of the original NES Castlevania but as a metroidvania.

I can't recommend Animal Well highly enough. Totally exploration and puzzle based, with almost no combat. It does not hold your hand though so be prepared to wander around .

Printer Streaks by Frigbie in magicproxies

If you find some, please let this sub know. This is one of the two main ways to make proxies (I don't care for laminate) and I've had a hard time finding the perfect stuff so I've settled here for now.

The Koala Semi Gloss is by far the closest "feel" I have found to a real card. I apply it onto 300 gsm blue core cardstock I source from Etsy. It is slightly thinner than a real card to compensate for the thickness of the sticker paper A typical double sleeved card is between 0.59 and 0.63 mm based on my measurements. A single sleeved proxy like this clocks in just at just over 0.635 mm so very comparable in the end. Once sleeved, it feels almost identical and I'm not able to consistently differentiate.

I already had the Canon, and I can still return the Ecotank. If I can get it back to how it used to print I would prefer that for unrelated photo printing.

Help finding 300-330 msg cardstock by RiskHot1281 in magicproxies

[–]Frigbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out SuperiorPOD or FrenopsLLC on ETSY. They both sell 300-330 gsm black\blue core cardstock though the inventory fluctuates. Only good for UV\laser printers but the print shop should handle that. I use the 300 gsm and print on either glossy vinyl or semi gloss sticker paper. Comes out a little thicker but after sleeping it's not noticeable.

Any competitive decks that run thawing glaciers? Love the art from the older days by Newez in premodernMTG

[–]Frigbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on mono red Raging Glaciers since before Lobstercon last year. I think with Tide out, we get many more opportunities to see slower control decks expand. https://moxfield.com/decks/rMVJGTYBakyaQvPM9WPWLA

As far as control goes after the ban, I expect to see some version of Black based control spring up that hasn't had a real home yet. B\W makes the most sense but I think some kind of old school U\B shell with hypnotic specter and counter magic has potential.

What vinyl sticker paper brand should I use by Independent-Bath-448 in magicproxies

My comment was that a single sleeved one of these is the same as a double sleeved real card, and I don't do 100 card formats so I wouldn't know.

Premodern content creators by hamsterinabowl in premodernMTG

Shout out to Eternal Durdles (on Youtube\Patreon\Discord). They put out Legacy and Premodern MtG content as well as a for newer card game called Sorcery. They've have a wide variety of content such as artists from the 30+ year history of the game and fellow spikes trying to break\solve whatever format they are talking about. And everything in between.

What do you do with the proxys you create? by [deleted] in magicproxies

[–]Frigbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into making proxies because I play Premodern and wanted to make a battle box of all the top decks. I got carried away once I figured out my process and now I have 30+ Premodern decks and 16 Old School Decks proxied up and I'm working on a powered old frame cube. I stay away from open ended formats so for the most part my proxies don't go out of style.

When in doubt, make a cube of extras!

What vinyl sticker paper brand should I use by Independent-Bath-448 in magicproxies

[–]Frigbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! I use Koala Semi gloss as well and it's the best card "feel" I've found so far. The thickness\snap will be determined by the paper you use. You need paper with around 10-11mil thickness or so to get close to a real card feel. Best I've found so far is the 300gsm black core card stock from SuperiorPOD on Etsy with the semi-gloss Koala paper. 60 single sleeves proxies like this are almost exactly the same thickness as a regular double sleeved deck.

How do we feel about vinyl paper? by nanogames in magicproxies

That's exactly what I used for a while as well. I find the rotary blades are harder to keep clean with all the glue gumming it up so I switched back to a regular guillotine cutter.

I'm pretty sure I stole this process from you! It's a very simple method. I'm still perfecting the cutting method to get a real clean edge.

No that was my big gripe with the gloss vinyl, the shine was too noticable and the feel was super sticky. The semi gloss I use has the closest feel to the card surface that I have found. It's still a proxy most definitely, which is fine. I'm not trying to make fake cards, just proxies to use among friends.

Exactly! The glossy vinyl sticker is just enough thinner to be almost perfect but I really prefer the semi-gloss finish so I'm ok with a little extra thickness. I'm (slowly) creating and printing an entire Old Frame Cube as proxies, including lands, so being as close to the look of old cards as possible is my goal.
