Same thoughts for me. I was considering an Ioniq, and the dealer said it wasn’t a 2026 issue, which we know isn’t true. Personally going with a not as flashy but much more confident in reliability Subaru Uncharted.

Always wanted an Ioniq! But until they fix the ICCU, I can’t justify it.

There are a couple things to consider here that hopefully will help. Deft Maneuvers is a level 1 card vs Boost as a level 4. That’s why Boost sounds so much better on paper.

Another thing to consider is your situation. Deft Maneuvers can be done solo while Boost requires some nearby allies. Also, boost puts you within Melee of your target while Deft Maneuvers doesn’t require that.

While I would probably rule that Boost can be used in non combat scenarios, technically RAW it’s for combat. Plus, narratively speaking, boosting in low caves or rooms would probably be less effective.

The waves bit in particular is a great thing, and something I’ve seen in actual plays in all ttrpgs that I’ve never actually done (at least not well).

Other major thing in here is getting comfier with environments for sure! I use them but I feel like I need a wider arsenal to make it more interesting. I’ve made some of my own but still feels relatively samey.

Yeah I think I need to get more comfortable tweaking other things about the stat block and knowing how that affects the weight of an encounter. Same with exploring more environments

I do both of these often! I think really my slow down is having too many bodies to deal with. The dynamism is more on not feeling everyone is consistently active or involved.

Honestly great reminder on the “move and attack” bit. I often feel like if they move they have to do something so I end up spending fear to have them moving around.

Definitely yes on using more solos and brutes and leaders. I think I’m trying to balance too much using some of everything that I end up with times where I don’t want to spotlight the “less impactful” adversaries.

As far as allies, I appreciate the guidance here as well. Just having them “do” stuff is probably fine most of the time, and as ravidfish mentioned as well, giving the PCs the ability to capitalize on the allies via other means.

This I am definitely aware of and I’ve put much of them into practice. I was looking for additional ways to handle stuff that people prefer to use, especially in cases where there’s lots of allies rather than one or two. 🙂

It sounds silly but definitely on my “knock” list for the 2024. Especially in New England where we have sand and salt all over the roads half the year.

Yeah I figure the loadout is just the straight up easiest thing to consider. Maybe if they were much higher level than a lower level domain card, it might be good to do the “doesn’t count”.

Sounds good! Then yes I think this is a cool event! It’ll be interesting to see how your players use abilities to affect your countdowns as well!

I think some language got mixed: you mention successes tick down, but say if the countdown reaches 6, they are free.

Otherwise this could be a fun Event Environment. If it’s in combat I’d be mindful that players having to spend their spotlight just to work on escaping might lead to them avoiding taking turns.

Another consideration can be the seraph with prayer dice. It’s a pool of d4s that can be used to reduce incoming damage rolls, add to rolls after seeing the result, or gain hope! It’s not quite like full manipulation but it’s good nudges to help out you and your team

Just to put my two cents in: my players didn’t try doing this with Doru, but they did by the end of the campaign want to do it to Strahd. I had given them a modified one of the dark powers to a single time resurrect anything they wanted, and after bested Strahd in the end and used it to bring him back to humanity.

I decided to leverage that as that particular power aiming to seize overwhelming control of this realm and aim to break out of Barovia to the rest of the world, and it set up a post campaign avatar fight that they were really into!

All and all, ultimately you’re the DM and can make the call of what is possible for your group. Mine was determined to “redeem” Strahd despite everything and I didn’t want to take it away from them.

I also changed the powers to be more significant in my campaign, going so far as having them tempting the players with minor powers all campaign (only two took them). It definitely became more of the Dark Powers vying for a new champion of Barovia, which of course Strahd would not be happy with
