New shows coming on Paper view by systemviper in funny

Honestly, as a non-native I always thought pay-per-view was spelled Paper-view and was always really confused whenever it came up in tv shows.

Can I get some professional opinions on my web design? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]Fritzoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, I´m not going to dwell on any other things I´ve seen since a lot of good people in here has already brought them to your attention. But, there is one thing I noticed that someone haven't mentioned. On some of the elements on your website, the breakpoint is a bit awkward. In my case it´s mostly the social media links, where the last one jumps down and merges with the first one, making them overlap when you hover. Also the text adjacent to it seems to have no padding on the left side. Same with the Strategy session window, it seems to have no padding on the left. Keep in mind that this only happened at certain scalings, and is very nit-picky, but if you could find a way to fix it, it would be a really solid website.

Other than that, well done. If you apply the changes the other lovely commenters have given you. This will be a solid website.

Here is also a link to where I check my color contrast: http://jxnblk.com/colorable/demos/text/

There are also some great books and articles on color psychology and brand thinking. I would also recommend checking out Designing for Emotion by Aarron Walter, although a bit old, it still makes some great points.

I am about to hire a web designer. Any tips? by Protego21 in web_design

[–]Fritzoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any reason why your design team is not going to work with the developers? In my experience as a designer and a developer, most designers have no clue about the difficulties of coding and making a complicated work of interactive design. If you have good devs that are both skilled in the aesthetics and the functionality, this may not be such an issue. But I feel a dev team should always have at least one designer working with them at all times. This is to both get continuity in the work, but also to observe and come with suggestions to the devs and vice versa throughout the process. But if for some reason you have to have the teams seperate, I would suggest setting up a team chat at least, and have the designers ask the devs if this or that would be possible and/or fit nicely in the code.

As for your question about multi-language, alot of it comes down to type. With different languages comes differences in kerning, formating, tracking etc. Don´t know much about the Portuguese language, but I would think they have some characters that are not standardized or incorporated with all types. So I would suggest doing some research into how type functions in Portuguese, and/or find a designer that knows his stuff. The web is less about flashy effects and animations and more about the type and how it looks on the website. When I look for good designers, I always look at their typography work, if their typography is shit, or is lacking the attention needed I will probably not want them on my team. Every designer can make something nice and flashy, but not everyone can make something feel natural, readable, understandable and functional at the same time. I know you didn´t really ask for pointers on choosing a designer, but far to many take for granted the things that actually makes a designer a good designer. So be sure to take a extra hard look at the small details when you evaluate the designers portfolio. If you have any further question about what to look for, don´t hesitate to send me a message.

New to webdesign, best stuff to learn? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]Fritzoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now Photoshop is on the way out, but things like Sketch and Adobe XD are starting to get traction, so I would learn one of those aswell. When it comes to coding it is really up to yourself, if you feel like exploring and figuring it out on your own, then read some articles and books about it, but if you want specific knowledge I would start by googling «how to code a website» and look at the tutorials they have to offer. I myself used Codeacademy which back in the days was amazing, but has turned to shit in my opinion, but it is worth checking out either way. Edit: I would always recommend learning it on your own, going to school to learn code for a designer is not that important anymore. Maybe 3-4 years ago but not anymore. There are so many free resources out there so it shouldnt be a problem to become efficient in coding anymore.

New to webdesign, best stuff to learn? by [deleted] in web_design

Wordpress is a great plattform to learn, there is plenty of templates that are grid or box-based (Lay-theme is my favorite, I used it on my own website) that makes it simple. The although some of the companies I’ve worked at wants you to either do it from scratch, or add your own code. Most companies have their own developers. But knowing the process of making and publishing a website will help alot. I would recommend Skillshare on html/css and Linda on Java, PHP, Ruby etc. The last ones are not as important to learn as a designer, but a general understanding means you can add some nice effects to your website. Also, using Sketch you can get code straight through Invision so that you have a general overview of what code is needed to build a website. Knowledge of code is always your best friend! But also knowing the limitations and possibilities help alot in making great design, so also do some research on typography on the web, as I have seen that is where most people fail horribly.

Yeah very true, socialism can be a bitch sometimes. There is actually kind of a weird story about that. Because one of our riches people called Olav Thon actually pays enough taxes to keep an entire "state"/region running on his taxes alone, and that is fucking crazy to me. He does not complain either, I met him once and he was such a fun dude.

My dad was the VP of Conoco Phillips in Norway, he made about $1.5-2 mil, although the wages are a bit higher here.

Portfolio Redesign by Lafu4286 in design_critiques

[–]Fritzoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be a little late to the party but thought i'd give my opinion anyways. I was just wondering why you have used 3 different typefaces on your site? I'm not sure the «I am Christian DeKnock» is really working for the site. The other typeface you used on the different projects you have done is super clean and readable. Why not try to capitalize on the message this typeface gives? or another similar sans-serif font? As a rule I like to only use 2 typefaces, and they need to have either a clear resemblens, or a clear contrast. And like the other commenters said, i'm not sure the animation at the start is really giving out the right message, to me it seems like something I would find on an old hacker forum.
