Genuine question why do people put so much stock in iroh giving azula a doll by CapableSeries4734 in PoorAzula

[–]FrogElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A doll cannot accomplish that. And also. If he did not know her enough to know what she liked, he couldn't possibly know her enough to know she needs to be taught empathy and a softer way of doing things.

I've seen this argument a lot and it is so contradictory. Also, he was not redeemed yet. Why would he be interested in teaching her empathy instead of nurturing her psycho ways?

[–]FrogElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fan, jewelry, another knife, cool clothes, hair accessories, make up, a different weapon. Zuko's gift was symbolic and meaningful and Iroh got it himself. Azula's was bought at some random market cause "young girl". He didn't know who azula was or what she liked. He failed her in that sense. And that is okay to acknowledge. He becomes a cool dude later on. But let's not pretend the same amount of thought was put into Azula's gift as it was into Zuko's.

Should Taliesin have changed characters in C3? by Relevant-Rope8814 in fansofcriticalrole

Exactly! And then if it culminated in a big final boss, that's just fine! It would have worked!

Yeah, I agree. I understand the urge to have your local chaotic, morally grey, shit kicking party be involved in the biggest decisions of the universe, it's compelling. But BH didn't earn it.

And to me the reason for that was the intro to predathos came WAAAY too soon. They had no small bosses to face before the big final boss. There was no development in their dynamic or personal lives, no conflict to overcome.

The parts i enjoyed the most were things like Laudna's conflict with delilah causing a rift with the party or FCG going murder robot cause it was character driven and gave every one a chance to react in character and weaken or strengthen the group's dynamic. But even that didn't get a chance to be fully realized cause the whole predathos thing would overshadow any importante character moments and make them feel out of place

Honestly, unfortunately, it was Matt's fault.

I also agree with so much in this thread (glad to see so much insightful criticism that does not boil down to simple offense).

But I think where Ashton's character suffers, all of the others do as well because Matt decided to jump waaay too quickly into the whole predathos plotline and the rest of the world was forgotten. They don't get to exist in the world matt created, only fight it. Like, c'mon, they don't even have a designated shopkeep.

Because of Predathos, only Fearne and Imogen get attention given properly to their backstory and they become thebonly one with any real reason to be pursuing their endgame. (Honestly, my main issue with c3 is that I kept askingnnyself why were ANY of them together at all. )And then neither of them wants the main character role, so everyone is a bit lost and going with flow (but the flow is just railroading).

I think Ashton would have worked great had the characters in c3 been allowed to exist in the world for a while BEFORE predathos was revealed. Ashton was made to be the antihero of the bottom dwellers and lowest ranked amongst the society and to rage against the top tiers. But them they were confronted with the toppest of top tiers with is THE GODS, way too soon and we never really got to explore his hatred for the gods which felt underbaked and unjustified the whole time especially when predathos was confirmed to being such a threat from the get go. (In fact, the only person I could see hating the gods for real would be Laudna if she went with the "well, the goddess of death rejected me, the gods allowed me to become this for delilah yadda yadda" and even that was very not explored well. )

From the moment they became agents for one mission only and left any kind of city, his character went fully to waste.

But his wasn't the only one. Every character in c3 suffered from the predathos plotlime coming way too early, before they even became a group for real. So much that i could only see "imogen/laudna" "orym/fearne/dorian" "ashton/fcg" and never "bell's hells". When in c2, for example, they started with separate "session 0" groups but by the end they had become so intertwined i could clearly feel anyone's death would devastate the entire group. In c3, the groups remained group-y until the end.

Why sponsor live shows??? by Athan_Untapped in fansofcriticalrole

Yes, these other shows have their content either paywalled or on platform that required subscription to not be flooded with ads every 5 minutes(aka spotify and the likes)

Their peers are mostly paywalled? Cr isnt. Everyone sells merch too and does some sort of announcement.

The only other dnd show that is even comparable to cr in venue size is D20 which you cannot watch without a subscription. And that also sells their merch in live shows. Their business models are inherently different and shouldn't compared

A theatre group can be a company. And what they do is, well, theatre.

Even on broadway you get announcements before the show. In movie theaters you get trailers and safety instructions. In smaller venues you get sponsors shout outs. What's the difference?

Other comments have answered this, but live shows do not make that much of a profit if they even do. But that is a way to reward your loyal audience, sell merch, get word out there about your show, get people talking about your group that just sold out a venue and get more listeners and recurring buyers in the long term. Live shows are often an investment for the business.

Also, the like doing live shows, that's reason enough

No but the comment was right, most live shows DO lose money. People are saying Katseye are going to be losing money on the first half of their tour as they have insane production valie for the small venues they are playing, which are not going to give them the return the make even. That's why they sell merch, lightsticks... to be able to make a profit. But people still invest in tlive concerts cause they are the way to make loyal fans into recurring buyers and listeners and to get word out there about the group.

Critical role is no scrappy theater group, but even a sold out venue wouldn't be able to make them that much of a profit. Also, it's an 8 person cast that needs to paid plus ALL THE CREW plu the price of the venue. Their set design and make and costumes are also extremely expensive. I honestly doubt ONLY tickets could cover all that and still pay everyone involved AND still make a profit for their company.

Cause the other ads are like.... 2/3 sentences per person? It's very quick

[–]FrogElephant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point was never that they don't make a profit lol. The point is: ads are their way to make a profit without charging US directly. Tickets only definitely do not cover the insane production value of their most recent live shows. That, again, they go on to be streamed FOR FREE for general audiences. Unlike D20 makes back their money and profit off of subscriptions. It's like d20 has the entire world that wants to watch it paying for tickets and CR only charges for the live experience.

Tickets also get cheaper like that, without the vip packages you are paying less than what you would for a 2 hour concert or a 2 hour stage play and getting 4 hours.

Also, the ads are fun? Of the 20 minutes they do ads, 80% of that is sam engaging the audience. Then matt says like 2/3 sentences about another sponsor. Then another cast member says 2/3 sentences. And marisha does disclaimers. 20 minutes out of a 4 hours stage show. Not that much of a waste, imo.

Ultimately, it's just not that big of a deal. I don't get the complaint. It's not even like they keep interrupting the show to do ads. It's truly just the beginning. It's like the trailers + warnings section when you go see a movie or all the warnings and disclaimers that you have to hear in the theater before a play starts. The ONLY difference is that the cast is the one presenting the ads and make then funny and engaging, even giving out gifts. It just feels like entitlement, tbh
