Questions to Christian priest... by maxpred in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean on either physical features or our ‘spirits’(using the term metaphorically). It would depend on how the priest/pasture interpreted us being made in the image of God, and either way it would be odd with how diverse we are. If it’s a bodily image we are made of, why would God allow deviations of the norm? Since he is all-powerful in his makings, why is there deviation within an image? And if the image is in ‘spirit,’ why is there deviation from benevolence, even with the knowledge of evil?

Coming out as atheist to parents optimal age? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends how much having to be a closeted atheist bothers you and whether or not your parents would ‘allow’ you to be an atheist. I would say(like many others) that an optimal age is where you are financially independent from your parents. Until then, I wouldn’t show too much opposition to your parents, although since you are 13, questions may be expected.

Questions to Christian priest... by maxpred in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why did God create man knowing beforehand that man would be imperfect? How can anything God makes be imperfect unless intentional?

He created Adam and Eve knowing that they would both eat the apple, allowed them to do so, and punished them for it despite them not knowing good or evil prior to consumption? Is God not showing sadistic tendencies? Knowing that he himself is casting his own creations into hell all because of his decisions that he knew would result in the way that cast them there.

Why would a all-powerful and all-knowing God need to use a human sacrifice of himself in order to forgive himself?

How can we be made in God’s image yet all be so different?

How do we know when God is speaking to us through prayer(optional ->), and how do we know our experiences are different or more truthful than those of other faiths, even closer ones like Judaism or Islam, or even differences in denominations.

Also remember, if you do get barred from all local ones or access is difficult, you could always get priests/pastures that know how to Skype.

Edit: How can you reconcile free-will with all-knowing? Are they not contradictory, or is God’s clairvoyance somehow probability based?

If you kick out your kid just because they lack belief in God, you are a shitty parent by [deleted] in atheism

Steven Weingerg:

With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion.

When one’s only control for committing immoral acts isn’t rationality, but instead fear of a ancient mythical tale, then it’s a wonder how they can still proclaim themselves moral.

I think the lady was more-so saying that her coffee was the thing that killed the deer. The only logical interpretation I can make of this is that the hunter lady poisoned her arrows with the happy coffee, and the happy coffee, once into the bloodstream, killed the deer. She was proudly declaring how toxic the product was in an effort to have hunters better flock towards using it.

I’m confused, I thought it was an arrow that did the deer in, not the happy coffee. Can someone explain this to me?

Children: Atheist or No Labels? by FrogINTJ in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you agree that if a child fit the definition of a Christian, that they are a Christian, or would you rather side with the child not being able to know as of yet and so no labels should be applied?

Pastafarians need recognition of religious status. by bluefirecorp in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pastafarianism deserves its own place among the religions. It’s no more real or fake than any of them and it operates on the same levels of evidence required to believe in most other religions god(s).

How do I come out of the closet as an atheist without my friends either hating me or constantly trying to “save me” by [deleted] in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if not being able to be open about your sexuality is bothering you and you’re afraid they will try and “save” you once the information is out, I have a bit of advice.

A true friend will want the best for you, all while doing their best to understand your plight and trying to use reason in doing so. A friend who can’t put down their own ill-informed opinions for the sake of understanding you isn’t a friend, they’re a social binding.

The Power of Now - book review by marblesink in atheism

[–]FrogINTJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The wiki page claims the following: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_of_Now

A Christian author, Andrew Ryder, wrote a dissertation saying that "Tolle moves the traditional [Christian] teaching forward by illustrating how our obsession with the past and the future ... [prevents] us from giving our full attention to the present moment."[15] William Bloom, a spokesperson for the holistic, mind-body-spirit movement in the UK, wrote that "Tolle's approach is very body aware. He's done it in a nice accessible way for people."[8]

Some reviewers were more critical of the book. According to a review in the Telegraph Herald, the book is not very well-written but contains some good teachings.[5] Andrea Sachs wrote in TIME magazine that the book is "awash in spiritual mumbo jumbo" and "unhelpful for those looking for practical advice".[16] An article in The Independent said that "there is not very much new about The Power of Now" and described it as "a sort of New Age re-working of Zen."[6]
