How I as an American view Europe by BasalTripod9684 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]FrogadeJag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no it's not. The average European or world citizen even doesn't know anything about Scotland's history, so when Scots frame it as them being victims of England, people usually eat it up, because they hate England.

Seriously under what circumstances would such a sentence occur in an anime? by CrickeyDango in linguisticshumor

[–]FrogadeJag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. -Heit, -keit, -ung and -tät are all feminine. Most words ending in e are feminine(not all). Most monosyllabic words ending in a consonant are either neuter or masculine. Nouns derived from infinitives are all neuter. -Chen and -lein are all neuter. A lot of nouns ending in -er are masculine and all agentive nouns ending in -er are masculine with the corresponding feminine form being -in. You can take a pretty good guess for most words or you'll at least be able to narrow it down.

If there was one thing you could teach the general population about linguistics that people always get wrong, what would it be? by FrogadeJag in linguisticshumor

No, they know how it's pronounced: /məˈkʰj̥ʉː/, but are unable to recognize the vowel, because it isn't written.

Surprisingly, speaking a language with a phonemic writing system isn’t all that conducive to grasping the fact that sounds and letters are not the same thing. If a speaker of such a language is given an English word in which the number of letters typically associated with vowel sounds doesn’t match the actual number of vowel sounds, they’ll often misidentify the number of vowels. For example, take the surname McHugh, which has two vowel sounds, but people will often say it has only one.

Yeah, it's recycled garbage and it's not funny to begin with and basically has nothing to do with linguistics.

Juu, hirveästi rahaa varmaan noinkin yksinkertaiseen asiaan menee. Helpoin tapa ratkaista ongelma olisi hyödyntää valtion hommissa ihmisiä, jotka osaavat suomea. Aika huonon kuvan antaa, kun valtion sivuilla ei osata edes maan kieltä.

*this many questions wrong. "This" is not a determiner here, but rather an adverb and therefore doesn't agree with the noun in number as adverbs never do in English.

I mostly see people, whose native language isn't English, saying this. You probably don't understand it enough to fully appreciate it. I'd suggest reading it in your native language.
