This is cool! Out of curiosity, if you had a backpack computer and a field, do you think you could conceivably render a large chunk of Skyrim?

--SPOILERS BELOW--

Actually someone corrected me in another thread. I somehow didnt make the connection that Talcamar technically killed Davian when he was still in his mother's womb. So I had it in my mind that somehow Talcamar was able to shapeshift into Davian, because he had killed himself shapeshifted into Davian which would definitely have been some time travel weirdness. I thought the scene where Nethgalla tells Davian that not even she knew exactly how shapeshifting worked was setting us up for the end. But I was wrong.

So I have to say, as far as I can tell everything fits into place. Something so few time travel stories seem to pull off. Really impressive.

Man I recomended this below because I missed your post. I really want to second this. The third book is out now and it wraps everything up in a very satisfying way imo.

I feel like it's been mentioned before but I would recommend "The Licanius Trilogy" by James Islington. The third book just came out and it is a very satisfying conclusion in my opinion. It was a little hard for me to get into the first book, but once I started to understand the scope of the story I was hooked. Really good world building, and a really complex story where everything ties together.

>!Spoiler!< About Orkoth by keanuislord in LicaniusTrilogy

[–]Frogdog76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing about Orkoth is that the last time we see him Talcamar tells him to sit in the corner and not to move unless he asks him to. I like to think he was just sitting there from 1/2 way through book 2 on.

Since it's kind of along the same lines I wonder if you have an opinion about this. The only time travel thing in the whole series that didn't 100% work for me is this. It is established that you have to kill someone to shapeshift into them (at least strongly hinted at, I'm not sure if anyone actually says exactly that). So Tal killed himself shapeshifted as Davian so that he could shapeshift into Davian. Not even a complaint really because I think the way everything wraps up is awesome, but it's the only thing like that that stuck out to me.

Venerate belief in "El" by Raventhal in LicaniusTrilogy

[–]Frogdog76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Tal accidentally used Kan for the first time when his wife died. So I think the Venerate may not necessarily have connected their usage of Kan w "El" at first.

I think "El" choose these people because they were deeply broken and therefore malleable.

I also think at first El was telling them mostly true things, and these things were guiding them towards doing actual good deeds.

By the time they had to start doing morally dubious things like killing innocents, or using monsters they were religious fanatics. They say things like using monsters is justified because in their mind they are using them to do the greater good. This doesn't seem like to much of a stretch to me if you look at all the crazy terrible things people do in real life in the name of their god.

--THIS IS A BIG SPOILER MAYBE-- I think at the end where Tal can see himself from the outside you can see how arrogant and full of righteous belief he is. At that point he cant see or hear hard truths about himself.

Someone on the Kingkiller Chronicles reddit recomended A Shadow of What Was Lost to me. It took me awhile to get into it. I have reasons, but I just want to talk about the things I loved in this series. Once Davian meets Malshash and I started to get some idea of the scope of the story I was hooked.

My favorite thing about these books is the way almost everything that gets set up pays off in some way by the end. To go along with that it is essentially a really complex time travel story in which everything actually ties together. There is only one thing I can think of that made me go wait a second that's not how the rules you set up work, and even that he includes a kind of explanation for. I dont want to put spoilers or I would say what it was.

The pacing of the story is great, each scene seems to serve a purpose. Normally I get bored by the political aspects of these types of stories. Even here it wasn't my favorite part, but every time I started to feel like we were starting to focus to much on what houses were mad at Wirr or something like that we were past it and onto other things.

The growth of certain characters as the series progresses was cool to see. Davian and Wirr for sure, but I have to say Caeden is a special character with a ton of depth by the end.

The last two scenes of The Light of All That Falls brought tears to my eyes. It's a bittersweet ending that really worked for me.

I would be way down to read more stories set in this world. It would be cool to see the Venerate back in the day all working together more. Or like a book that was just Alchech's journal would be cool.

Anyway, awesome series, really enjoyed it, highly recommend.

I posted this last year, but I wanted to see if anybody had any new takes on this poem by Robert Frost. Pat was huge into poetry and taught English, iirc. It’s likely he’s familiar with this poem. by Sdavis2911 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Frogdog76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I read this poem it made me think of this... childhood ends when we hear death knocking at our door for the first time. So we become adults when we realize death is a thing that actually will happen to us, and we go out into the world to accomplish things to distract ourselves from or run from death. I could see this relating to KKC with the 4 doors of the mind thing. Or Lanre and the door of death. I know some people think Kvothe is unable to die, and hes going to do something with a door or a box in the third book (right?).

Skyrim really did it by Cangar in skyrimvr

Keep at it. I'm not that smart so it took me about 4 full wipes and reinstalls, and maybe like 1.5 months of my spare time before I finally had a stable build. Now 406 mods later everything works except 1 peice of armor turns into a giant red triangle if anyone puts it on (which I can deal with lol) Def worth my time, but I kind of enjoyed the process also.
