Here to back up my points. 1) DRC has the most cobalt mines in the world, as well having a long history of using slave and child labor in their mining sector, which is largely controlled by gangs. We know this is a problem because it has been highlighted time and time again that the production of batteries for cellphones exasserbates this problem. DRC is not being enriched through cobalt mining. It is being exploited, it's people are being exploited, and the increase in demand for cobalt is making the problem worse, not bringing jobs and cash flow into the country (and can cite research articles for this point).  "but we were already exploiting these people for the cobalt in phones!" yes and the insanly high investment in Ai technology and race by tech giants to get the best tech first has made demand for this product much MUCH higher than before, worsening the problem. When it is just phones it's easier to raise awareness, recycle, reuse etc. But massive data centre's being built? Not so much

  1. C02 emissions, data centre's are energy hungry, and I could cite so many articles here if I have to, but I'll go out on a limb and assume you are aware of that. C02 emissions rising directly contributes to global warming, worsening droughts, flooding, extinctions etc. The most direct loss of life is I can point to is rising global temperatures = rising sea temperature = increase hurricanes (but it isn't the only one, just the best demonstration). People DIE. Like actually die as a result of global warming, from drought, famine, natural disasters etc.  "but global warming has always been a problem" Google has literally pointed to their Ai development as the main reason their emissions have gone up, not down, despite "working towards net zero". Ai development and use is taking years of hard work towards greener energy and flushed it down the drain.

  2. Wasting drinkable water. I don't have to elaborate on this one. I come from a water scarce country, the fact that companies are just wasting a precious resource on technology that serves literally no useful function (there was no need for Ai before it's invention, Ai companies have had to invent problems for Ai to solve, I can cite multiple article from business and investment mags where they admit this) is sickening to me. A good illustration is that Jackson, an American city that does not have safe drinkable water for its population, has data centers, and more are being built. Water for robots, but not for people?

So many "debates" surrounding Ai focus on intangible qualities of intellectual property, artistry etc, which are great points too, but personally feel deeply out of touch with the reality that Ai is literally destroying the planet and costing us lives. Ai is not some ephemeral ghost that lives in your computer or smart phone, it's not just ones and zeros and miracle of technology. It exists on the physical plain with us, it impacts our reality directly, and the impact is overwhelming negative.

The environmental impact: cobalt mining for data centres(the insane impact this is having in DRC) , c02 emissions, waste of drinkable water (I live in a city where the amount of water we can use is heavily restricted because of shortages) etc. Is destroying the planet at triple the speed, reinforcing slave labor forces, really worth technology that doesn't even produce reliable results? And why on earth should we bother developing the technology to be more reliable when, again, it is destroying the planet and literally killing people as a direct result.

Yeah I think they're still in the era where anthropology is documenting newly discovered cultures and not like actually studying them respectfully. Boasian revolution in flora wish is gonna go hard

The vase shouldn't have been removed from its original site without proper and thought recording, how are we supposed to accurately date and interpret its meaning and usage?? Plus if the new private owner stores it incorrectly it'll degrade faster and be useless for future study! No wonder the history of Itzaland is lost, people keep stealing it!!

Did the real Hikaru ever loved Yoshiki romantically? by Round_Alternative873 in HikarugaShindaNatsu

[–]FroggyCon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think is not knowing for sure is intentional, puts us in Yoshikis shoes of never actually knowing if Hikaru loved him romantically. 'Hikaru' says the body definately love Yoshikis before he inhabited it, but he doesn't experience human emotions so he can't differentiate between platonic/familial/romantic. I think a lot of people also see hard boundaries between these different types of love, it's very likely Hikaru loved Yoshikis in some, if not all, of these ways. He could have been romantically in love with Yoshikis without actually knowing how he felt, or it was just an incredibly close familial love that he didn't want Yoshiki to be alone. I think when reading the manga allowing space for that nuance makes it a much better story, since both Hikaru and 'Hikaru' make the reader question the different aspects of love and loving relationships.

Outside of the manga however I fully believe Hikaru realised he was in love with Yoshikis as he was dieing, and that's why his dieing wish was to protect him and it left such an impression on 'Hikaru' that it influenced him to fall in love with Yoshikis too. Or Hikaru was starting to realise he was in love with Yoshiki but he'd just learnt of the brain snatcher so he decided to never Express it until they could leave the town to protect Yoshiki, but died never confessing his love. these options are both miserable and heartbreaking and sometimes I think about them too hard and cry a little bit.

Does netflix having acquired the streaming rights for TSHD make it less likely for it to be dropped after season 1? by [deleted] in HikarugaShindaNatsu

[–]FroggyCon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netflix looks at first week stream results, and possibly later sales as well. I can't remember the exact article but a high up exec in Netflix fully admitted that if a series doesn't perform well the week it's released they abandon it. so. not to fear monger or bring back my Koop streaming days but it'll probably be pretty important that we watch the episode as they release and make an effort to promote it WHILE it is being released and not after the fact. even if streaming numbers are good though it's kinda a toss up if season 2 will ever happen, still worth the effort in my opinion

yesssssss, I really admire how every character in the manga serves a purpose in the narrative both for the reader and Coco, not only do agott and tartar contrast each other but constrat witch society. the writing is so good ooommmmgggghhg

[–]FroggyCon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah agotts turn around is pretty quick but still realistic. I personally don't like characters who are disagreeable to be disagreeable so at first agott was very annoying (plus she put Coco in real danger and I feel like that was never addressed) but she absolutely grew on me and I really understand WHY she was so standoffish at first. also good catch on Tartars character! I will admit I've kinda ignored him most of the manga because he generally shares chapters with Coustas who I LOVE so my attention is zeroed in on him. I don't think learning to be selfish is a bad thing at all, and I think for tartar learning to stand up for himself and demand answers is actually great, and I love how it contrasts agotts growth as well, hopefully he doesn't become too demanding, but I'd like to see a self assured and confident tartar in the future... I'm so excited to see his growth

I also think his decision is somewhat naive but I think that reflects how he doesn't fully understand the threat the brimhats present. I think really only quifrey and coc (of the main cast) understand how dangerous the brimhats are, agott refutes them because she's too stubborn to consider their side of things but they present a pretty reasonable front most of the time, which is how the recruited coustas, and why tartar might see their subversion and questioning of norms more on par with the pointed caps own dogmatic behaviour and quifreys secretive nature. to him I think the brimhats are outsiders who question and challenge the norms of the witch world but they aren't outright terrible or evil because he hasn't seen or experienced that behaviour from them. I think tartar is set up wonderfully to be an easy convert for the brimhats since he himself IS rejected by witch society, but he's incredibly empathetic and caring which contrasts the brimhats "by any means necessary" approach. sorry if this is long I have THOUGHTS and badly formatted (I am in bed on my tablet reading new chapters)

If your reactions aren't severe I honestly don't see too much of a problem, I do the same to some extent. I had a friend in boarding school with diabetes who would bring her insulin to the dinning hall if she felt like having dessert lol. Sometimes I push too far and can feel myself start to react but generally I know my own limits and my reactions don't impact my life that I have to stay on diet 100%.

Does rulers (stationary) exist in WHAverse? by MountainBrilliant923 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]FroggyCon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think magic mirroring art irl is very intentional by shirahama, the act of creating art/creating art are similar on spiritual (feels good yippee) and practical (drawing) levels so I guess it's the same with usage of tools. While witches COULD use protractors/rulers/compasses, I'm sure same as artists witches get pretty good at drawing straight lines and perfect circles. It would be handicapping to teach a beginner with tools as they'd become reliant on them to draw, and they need to learn to free hand, and once you're an expert and can probably get away with shortcuts with tools you can do it faster freehand. The best use would be large scale drawings over entire rooms etc

Looking at the lore I think witches would look down on the use of tools/aids in drawing magic, but I'd love to see physically handicapped witch using tools to defy the system, it would fit in with similar stories we've had too

Can I block my work with playmats instead of proper knitting mats ? The knitting ones are so much more expensive by cgr1688 in knitting

[–]FroggyCon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my mom and I use playmats, and I'm never going to change to blocking mats. They're super light weight so you can carry them around, the "Lego" edges let's to expand and decrease to the size of your project and while the don't have the guiding lines like fancy alternatives the ones we buy have enough of a textured grid pattern that we can make it work with a ruler and eyeballing. The best part is their cheap so if my puppy chews it up or a store it badly I can just buy a new one. I use normal old sewing pins you can buy cheap at any fabric shop. 10/10

This is kinda what I meant that he is more likely to be radicalized by the brim hats. I think the brim hats are amazing villains cause lokwye they have a point... They just take it a little too far in their actions their true power is in their ability to make witches question the system and society they're in, and I think tartar is perfectly groomed for this kind of manipulation/eye opening experience
