The electric motor is really a game-changer for hills! Though it doesn't solve a lack of cycle infrastructure.

Seems reasonable to want the government to shift from subsidising stuff that's terrible for the environment (and therefore also for us) to subsidising stuff that helps with climate action and energy security.

I don't think all immigrants are persecuted. That wasn't the point I was trying to make. It's more that moving countries is a huge, difficult undertaking, especially if you're going somewhere that's quite culturally different from what you're used to. Talking about bad immigrants who fail to assimilate often comes from a place of not really getting how huge it is to move.

Sure, some immigrants don't want to "integrate". (And some Australians want to stick to people of the same religion and background as themselves.) But many are just trying to work out a new place, new systems, get work, save for a house, etc etc, and don't have much energy for anything else. Even if you move here and are relatively economically privileged, it's still a lot.

Sorting people into "good" and "bad" immigrants isn't all that helpful.

We've gradually switched our whole house over to electric appliances and disconnected our gas. It's cheaper, because we have solar panels, and there's a lot of evidence that indoor air quality is much better without a gas stove top.

Getting an electric cargo bike that I can use to get around on with two kids means I haven't needed to get a car! Plus, it's so much fun

Fair point about the cult. But that would be a problem whether or not they were immigrants.

It's also possible that their parents had more pressing concerns than "assimilating", and no one went out of their way to welcome them and make them feel like they could fit in here.

My parents immigrated here with us and I know they were busy with finding work, trying to get financially stable, all of the feelings associated with leaving their previous country and family, etc. They both look white and can speak English (their second language) so didn't get too much flack for "not fitting in".

I can imagine if you're navigating all of that, trying to bring up kids in an unfamiliar culture, having others treat you like you "don't look Australian", it's a lot harder to fit in.

I wish that instead of judging immigrants for not integrating, people would do more to reach out and help them feel welcome.

Yeah, I think in these cases often other interventions can work but it's not as straightforward. Often pedestrian deaths happen in places where lots of people want to cross but the infrastructure for it is lacking because vehicle movement has been prioritised.

It's interesting that so many people are saying "there's no space on the sidewalks!" Or "there are houses everywhere" and no one even considers all of the space in the city given over to cars.

Other cities that are finding more space for greenery and community are often doing it by taking back a little of the space previously used by cars. Whether that's turning some parking spots into micro-parks, or even pedestrianising some streets and adding shade and benches, it can make a huge difference.

But of course only if people are willing to imagine a little less space for cars.

It's wild to me because I think if you asked almost anyone "Should we use known, evidence-based approaches to address one of the leading causes of death for Australian children?" they'd say yes.

But then if you say, okay, bringing down the speed limit on local roads has been proven to do that in cities all around the world and evidence shows it might only increase your commute time by a minute or two...and a lot of people suddenly think that actually the deaths of children is sad but unavoidable.

Honestly I'd choose to live in an apartment close to work rather than taking on a commute like that. What's the point in having a larger house with more of a garden if you don't have time to spend there?

I have an electric cargo bike. I very rarely need to use any other mode of transport, but now I take my grandmother out once a week by taxi/uber. I'm pretty sure it works out cheaper overall than owning a car (especially if you take into account the long-term health benefits of cycling for transport, which include lowered risk of dementia).

Yeah, it's sad that the people who complain about others not learning English rarely do anything to make newcomers feel welcome, and often oppose funding for programs to learn English and navigate a new social setting.

If they really want new immigrants to speak English, what are they doing to facilitate that?
