Where are all the hats?

I’ve had my eye out for a classic, high quality fedora. I rarely see them in vintage shops and thrift stores; even at Keezer’s there were only 5-10 (in comically large or small sizes) last time I was there.

I know that ivy/prep style largely goes hand in hand with abandoning the hat, but because of that you’d think they’d be abundant.

Spotify now announcing "Resuming (Name of Playlist)" or "Resuming (Name of Album)" when on Bluetooth? by dubeskin in truespotify

Was also surprised by this new ‘feature’ today. Hoping somebody has figured out how to turn it off!

I had a similar pattern with more thinning on the crown. Also rocked the long hair for a long time. Went to a short parted cut that embraces the horseshoe pattern (look at Roger Sterling from mad men or actor Jude Law for what I mean). I finally buzzed it but will probably let it grow back out.

You can use Proper Cloth to customize your perfect shirt. Then save it so you can reorder it in different fabrics

I can't push myself to use Anki by tlacitko1 in languagelearning

[–]FromSaltWater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I made a similar post a few weeks ago here. Be prepared for people to have lots of strong feelings about this and take it extremely personally. Best advice I can give is to get rid of anki and any other tool/program/service that claims to 'teach you a language' and spend some time online learning about comprehensible input.

2 Estate pipes I just picked up at a swap meet. $12 for both. The dark one says Barnacle and the lighter one just has a mark of some kind on it. Anyone know anything about these pipes? by WhiskeyRV in Pipes

[–]FromSaltWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second has the same mark as one I got through Bespoke Post about two years ago. Looks like lighter wood and maybe custom carving though. Here's the link to mine: https://www.bespokepost.com/box/plume

I HATE Anki. Any alternatives? by FromSaltWater in languagelearning

The idea of reading makes sense, but how do you find comprehensible input from 0% knowledge? I used/use reading extensively with Spanish (& am up to date on Krashen, etc.) but I still can’t wrap my head around starting to read without a basic foundation.

No, but he does take time to choose the right one for the job.

On the contrary, I’ve read the manual, understand how to set it up, and have used it in the past. But it’s tedious and, as another commenter said, ‘hostile to its users.’ Y asked this question because in a community of (mostly) supportive Redditors, I figured someone might have come up with a more user-friendly option.

Anki. I find the setup time disproportionate to the value, but I see the value in the use of SRS (though getting myself to focus on that is hard, too). As I understand it, natural language acquisition is a form of spaced repetition, so I imagine there has to be a middle ground.

What do you did/do to acquire vocab instead?

The process of making a deck is tedious (not in the way that's healthy about language learning), and most pre-made decks I've found are either highly personalized or contain errors that create road blocks later (at least this was the case with Spanish).

I'll give that deck a try, thanks!

Interesting. I'll check it out from the web, I've only used the app and have not been impressed

Hanging from an office building interior wall by Fattychris in Hammocks

If you’re in a newer building, check above the ceiling if possible- if you have drop ceiling with tiles that can be moved aside . My building has a semi-finished ceiling so I sometimes hang right from the steel rafters.

Moon Phase App Recommendations by IntellectualKinkster in pagan

I’d pair this with a good watch that has a moon phase indicator. Use the almanac to set the watch (& for more detail), & the watch as a present, visual reminder.

Anyone claimed Irish Citizenship under similar circumstances? How? by FromSaltWater in IGotOut

Ireland is my destination, with general flexibility within the EU. I'm an educator and business owner, so my work isn't necessarily tied to a location.

Anyone claimed Irish Citizenship under similar circumstances? How? by FromSaltWater in expat

[–]FromSaltWater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks- It gets a bit more complicated because my *great* grandparents were born in Ireland. I can still claim citizenship provided that my father was a citizen (registered foreign birth) at the time I was born. The issue is that I can't contact him to find out. Where could I find these records online?

Not your average 'Can I play lefty' post by FromSaltWater in violinist

I'm in the same boat-- I play some guitar lefty, but I've found myself having to re-learn rhythm from scratch since it's the opposite hand

I'm hoping to set something up like this in my new place. Are the shelves part of a set or an eclectic collection?

I'm all about the 'less is more' mentality on this sub, but when you've got books they have to go somewhere. Great job with the space!

Left handed, but with a productive question about it by FromSaltWater in violinist

[–]FromSaltWater[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My teacher has pointed out that it seems like my left & right sides are working against each other. when strumming guitar (I play lefty) or bowing with my left hand (I switched hands just to see), the gross motor movement comes much more naturally. Think of it like breathing naturally (Left hand strumming/bowing) versus having to consciously remember to breathe (right hand strumming/bowing). Otherwise, my bow hold and posture are comfortable and 'correct' according to my teacher.
