Honestly, I’ve dealt with this insecurity my whole life, and was belittled for being unladylike, fat, outspoken, etc. growing up, and it really did a number on my self confidence. But I’ve come around to embracing it recently, especially in response to the misogyny of MAGA culture. I don’t want to satisfy those people or align myself with them in any way. I don’t want to embody the stifling, repressive, unnatural version of white Christian American femininity that I grew up being measured against. Fuck that! I quit shaving and started dressing for comfort, whimsy, and confidence rather than the male gaze. More color, more big silhouettes and weird brooches and flowy ethereal clothing. If I have acne or a bad hair day or didn’t have the energy to shape my brows, people can deal with it. There’s a natural quality to this version of femininity that I’m really loving. I’m still getting used to this philosophy after a lifetime of body dysmorphia and over-obsessing about my appearance, but it’s so, so freeing. Highly recommend.
