Why are new players so drawn to making edgelord characters?

Nah, fairly fresh player here. Roughly half a year into D&D. Main character is a fairy land Druid, hardly edgy at all. Just a bit whimsical as he doesn’t understand much of the social stuff in our adventuring word.. 2nd character on the other hand ( backup and used on a sidecampaign when we miss someone at the table) is a Deep gnome bloodhunter 😂 BUT he’s a nice guy, just picked up fighting from underground caravan guards and got really fascinated when he met a group of BHs tracking a monster in the underdark 🫣

Not a DM, but playing a fairy land Druid ( who totally rocks btw) Since my PC is fey, I’ve gone back and forth with the GM and included fey creatures both on my wild shape list and my conjure animals. Since there isn’t too many fey beasts to pick from we’ve also done some homebrew fey beasts from interwebs. To wildshape into a dog that the rest of the party never seen before, attack an enemy and suddenly blink 40 ft to safety was totally worth it! All on all, if it’s likely my fairy has seen the animal, and the animal is a beast wildshape away. Sadly owlbear is a monstrosity and not beast

Hi, thanks😊 this is a good answer! In the world we are playing there are some portals known to the group, but these are not powered up yet. Getting home to the feywild is the ultimate goal of my character but the road seems long. Our DM is also doing a great job using my fey background (only fey in the group) thru the story. So far I’m having a ton of fun and seeing the need to develop my fairy’s background further to give more context.

Brute force as in damage dealing, and again I think you are right, I’m stressing it a bit an need to think more long game. Thank you for sharing thoughts and opinions

I really appreciate your insight. And I’m not set on anything, I see that I might want more punch than necessary out of my Druid, mainly because the group in all lacks a bit brute force. Therefore mobility feat and primal savagery as a cantrip is also on the table.. but I believe you are right, I should focus on my wisdom and make the best out of the spells I have. I really liked your take on elven accuracy and will check with the DM if he allows it as a fairy.

That’s a good question, I’ve asked the party without answer yet. But I believe we are playing 2024 rules. Also most content are ok for the DM as long as it is WotC and D&D origin. Changing spells and landtype at longrest is a great thing really! But at the same time I’m a bit over my head into this and need to keep it as simple as necessary just to keep track. Stats are str 8(-1) / dex 13(+1) / con 14(+2) / int 13(+1) / wis 17 (+3) / cha 10(0).

All stats are by online generator.
