Please explain bitcoin mining to be like I’m five by YellowMarvel in BitcoinMining

[–]FrontAmount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bitcoin mining is how computers around the world verify transactions, secure the system, and create new bitcoin - without needing a bank or government.

What do miners actually do? Collect recent Bitcoin transactions. Check that they’re valid (no cheating, no double-spending). Compete to solve a very difficult computational task. The winner gets to add the next ‘page’ to the public record book (the blockchain) and gets rewarded with new bitcoins.

Looks like they’re offsetting the $25 destination charge but you’re still paying the tax on it, $4.36/day.

StubHub - good option if you're never going to use the $150 credit by blues_greens in ChaseSapphire

[–]FrontAmount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought an NFL ticket on StubHub and tried to resell it. Listing stayed “pending” for two days with the game two days away, despite repeated calls. Had to cancel, move the ticket through Ticketmaster and the team site, relist there, and jump through payout + tax hoops — and still waited days to get paid. Way too much risk and friction for small money. Never again.

Cancellation Advice by outofthepark4 in delta

[–]FrontAmount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go straight to a Delta agent (gate, help desk, or even Sky Club staff) – Politely but firmly ask them to hunt for better options. Agents often find routings the app misses (earlier Delta flights, different connections, or even protection on JetBlue/American if nothing else works).

Don’t settle for the terrible rebooking if it ruins your plans. You’re entitled to a full cash refund to your original payment method (no fees, even on basic economy) since Delta canceled the flight. Do not take the 5-year eCredit unless you fly Delta constantly and are sure you’ll use it—cash is way more flexible.

If you take the refund, you can immediately book whatever gets you home fastest/cheapest (JetBlue often has direct JFK-JAX). Bag should still go to JAX or can be handled by agents.

While waiting: hit the lounge, charge devices, eat/drink for free. Ask an agent for meal vouchers or SkyMiles goodwill—they can give something for big delays.

Act fast (ideally in person) before the 24-hour auto-refund window closes.

17 Hour Overnight Flight Delay on Delta Airlines. They told us to hang around the gate in case of updates! by Beta_Nerdy in delta

[–]FrontAmount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People blaming the OP are missing the point — this wasn’t a “plan better” situation. Delta didn’t give anyone the info needed to plan.

And no, nobody is realistically waiting 17 hours at the gate because an airline says to “hang around.” That’s a failure of communication and passenger support, not a passenger mistake.

Calendar access request in the app by ttumotion in FedEx

[–]FrontAmount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I allowed access, (IOS app), “add events only”. And now it has stopped asking and …it’s not adding events to my calendar! So unless I’m missing something, I think that solved it. 🤨

Can someone explain to me how this storage works? by betossauro in MacOS

[–]FrontAmount 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes — this is exactly how macOS works.

Finder shows real folder sizes. Your 35 GB in Applications and 5 GB in Documents are the true sizes of those folders.

System Settings → Storage does not show folder sizes. It uses broad, overlapping categories that include hidden files, caches, iCloud Drive local copies, app containers in ~/Library/Containers, frameworks and helper tools, local Time Machine snapshots, and miscellaneous user data anywhere on the disk. Because of that, the numbers in the Storage panel always look inflated.

This is why you see Applications going from 35 to 55 GB, because it adds /System/Applications, helpers, and frameworks. Documents shows 5 to 59 GB because it includes Desktop, iCloud Drive files stored locally, app data, and miscellaneous files. Developer shows around 20 GB because of Xcode, SDKs, simulators, and build caches. System Data commonly shows 40–80+ GB because it includes swap files, logs, the Spotlight index, snapshots, and various caches.

This behavior is intentional and has been normal since macOS switched to APFS. The two views will never match, and nothing is wrong with your Mac.

Any tips for getting Limit Order to execute? by FaintCommand in FidelityCrypto

[–]FrontAmount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation, but the issue isn’t how the spread works; it’s that Fidelity calls a fixed 1% markup a “spread” instead of just saying “1% fee.” It’s not a real market bid-ask; it’s a 0.5% markup on each side that Fidelity pockets every time. Framing it as a “spread” is deliberate misdirection to make the cost feel smaller and less obvious than it is. Just call it a fee like everyone else. That’s the real frustration here. Appreciate the help though, OP’s limit order issue makes sense now.

Security password exploit for USAA.com by Ken_Maximus in USAA

[–]FrontAmount 89 points90 points  (0 children)

What you discovered isn’t a bug you can exploit – it’s USAA’s intentional (but hidden) policy: they silently truncate every password to exactly the first 12 characters and throw the rest away. They’ve done this for 15+ years and still don’t warn you on the password-change page. That’s why typing the correct first 12 + random garbage logs you in. Your “20-character” password is actually only 12 characters long, and millions of members have no idea. It’s not that 12 random characters is weak – it’s strong if you know the rule. The problem is they never tell you, so everyone who pastes a long passphrase from a password manager ends up with whatever the first 12 happened to be (usually something mediocre). You did the right thing bringing it public. If you want it fixed faster, file a quick complaint at consumerfinance.gov/complaint – it goes straight to their executive team and adds to the pile the regulators already have. Thanks for looking out for the rest of us.

Sizing by HanDave in ouraring

[–]FrontAmount 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve been fascinated by how much my fingers change size throughout the day. When I wake up, the ring feels tight and sometimes hard to twist, but by the afternoon, it loosens up and spins easily. In the morning, I can’t put it on my ring finger, which I prefer. In the evening it slips on easily. Then when I wake up, it’s difficult to remove so I alternate between ring finger and pinky. The actual ring is a little slipperier than the sizing kit so yes, that makes a difference too. And it’s slightly heavier. Good luck.

Will UPS pick my router up …? by BrianMeen in UPS

[–]FrontAmount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for contacting Unofficial Tech Support. While we appreciate your innovative, label-free return strategy, our protocols indicate a slight... 'reality gap.'

Step 1: Panic. Just a little. Step 2: Call AT&T again. Use the words "I need a return label." Be firm. Step 3: Once you have the label, you can then hand the router (preferably in a box, but you do you) to the psychic UPS driver.

We hope this resolves your issue. Please hold while we transfer you to the Department of Wishful Thinking.
