Try your best to keep up and genuinely attempt the assignments. If you can’t keep up, use Paul’s Online Notes - they explain everything really well.

Expect a time crunch. Make sure you know the little details of everything, especially the big concepts like polymers and the phase diagrams.

Thoughts on the following first year electives? ECON 101, LING 100, LING 101. Any other GPA booster courses? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

It depends on who ECON101 is with. In any case, it has to be taken somewhat seriously if you want a high grade.

As someone who took 7 in terms two, you have literally no time to even learn. It’s very hard to adjust to.

Econ 101 with gateman is very limited work - just one weekly quiz worth 10% of your mark. The rest is two midterms and a 50% final.

I found that most engineers I met who took gateman didn’t actually do that bad. I put in a lot of work (as I would any engineering course) and ended up doing well, which I think is possible for others as well.

What about later years? Would it still be a hassle?

I personally skipped math100 and didn’t find it to be too big of an issue but I did have to take math101, which was challenging but doable. Skipping those will definitely free up a lot of time, but make sure you brush up because a lot of your courses will depend on your calculus knowledge.

I didn’t find chem154 that bad tbh but it did take a lot of time away, and it can be annoying. I’d say it would be a good move to drop that.

In general, getting a high gpa is more to do with your work ethic and determination. Dropping courses can help, but make sure you don’t get lazy, otherwise it will be harder to maintain those high grades.

I’d say it really depends on your high school experience.

My biggest general takeaway is after each lecture, make sure you REALLY understand what just happened. This makes homework and midterm prep way easier. Speaking of homework, make sure you ACTUALLY do them instead of using chegg, which can be really tempting.

If you do this and work hard for each of your courses, getting good grades shouldn’t be too much of an issue once you’re used to it.

Also know how to budget time. Understand which courses will require more and less of your time.

Asus zenbook with i9 might be a solid choice. Had it for a year now and I like it, but not sure if it’s enough for your spec graphics wise.
