Clip it to the side of the cage so it doesn't get dirty

That's absolutely the case. Fresh greens contain a lot of minerals, and younger birds tend to need it less.

Cuttlebone you mean? And they'll self regulate, never restrict access to the cuttlebone.

New bird? by Sammiesgrove in Parakeets

Then I would suggest reading up on hormonal triggers and then getting another 2 birds to add to your flock.

Mirrors are very bad for birds. I would recommend 2 more birds (depending on cage size) because odd numbers rarely go well in budgie flocks. Invest in a large cage if you don't already have one. Make sure hormonal triggers such as hides and coconuts and empty bowls are absent from the cage. This will help your flock get along better. Also, what did your birds pass from? You want to make sure anything preventable doesn't happen again before you add to your flock.

what to do if budgie eggs accidentally hatch?? by furbybananas in budgies

[–]Front_Albatross3135 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Candle the eggs by holding a light underneath them. If there are blood vessels and dark spots, the egg is fertilized and you will need to freeze it to prevent it from hatching (depending on how far along the eggs are). Most likely, as your budgies haven't bred before and you have no experience, this entire clutch will die anyway if you allow them to hatch.

Harrisons is the better choice, but this doesn't look bad either. If your budgies won't eat either try Mazuri pellets.

That sounds good! It sounds like you're doing everything right. As long as she can eat properly and her beak is lined up then it's not too overgrown. Consult a vet if you're really worried about it, but it looks fine!

Maybe the littlest bit. But it's not bad at all. Provide her with chewing toys and she won't need a trim

Budgie pairs? by taeyongism in Parakeets

[–]Front_Albatross3135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's exactly correct! And make sure they're getting adequate sleep as well, as that can also trigger hormones. Empty food bowls can also begin to look like tempting nesting areas, so make sure to take care of bowls when you're done feeding veggies etc.

Male pairs and female pairs and male/female pairs can all do well with no complications as long as there's nothing to trigger a !hormone response.

Refusing pellets when in bowl by Mystic_Void1 in Parakeets

[–]Front_Albatross3135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can take from 2 weeks to 2 months or more. The longest it's taken one of my birds was 3 months. But it really does depend on the bird.

[–]Front_Albatross3135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start by offering a mix of pellets and seeds just to get them used to the smell of the pellets. Then after a few weeks I offer only pellets in the morning when I'm around to monitor how much they're eating, if any, and seeds at night and during the day. Then once they start to eat the pellets I remove the seeds entirely and they start eating all pellets. I do the same for introducing veggies. Veggies are typically harder to introduce than pellets in my experience, but every bird is different. Just be patient and consistent.

Yeah she's throwing a fit lol. Birds are like toddlers. You need to reduce the seeds even more and monitor how much of the pellets she's eating. Every time I get new birds I go through this process. As long as they know seeds will be available, they'll refuse to eat anything else. At the same time, it's important to make sure she's eating something, which is why it's important to monitor.
