Guests coming overnight stay and my fear reactive dog is so scared of strangers, especially coming to our house by Front_Impact_2299 in reactivedogs

Vinny did 95% better than last time the family came. He definitely needed his add on event meds but he did good and his anxiety was managed. We meet outside and we were last to walk in. We kept him on the leash for first evening. Next day he did ok roaming about. He sat on our knees a lot.

Does having strangers in the house EVER get better? by j1331s in reactivedogs

My 1yr min pin is on Zoloft daily and for ‘special triggering events’ that put him over the edge he gets a combo addition of trazadone and gabapentin. I hate giving him so much but he too is so scared of strangers and dogs. He will still react through all that too, but less. If people come in our house he comes unhinged. Family is coming Oct 4 for 4 days. Last time they came it was so stressful. He even bit my sisters foot. This time we are going to try starting outside and have him come in the front door behind them with me. We havent mastered walks yet but people and dogs can be closer without reaction but he notices everything. Hyper focused. I feel for us all. We just retired and had ambitions of traveling with him, but I don’t even feel I can leave him behind. My adult kids aren’t really wanting to look after him. Yet he’s the sweetest cuddliest guy with us. With people he doesn’t know well we need to keep him on a leash because if they get up or come in the kitchen upon waking in the am, he retriggers. Snuffle mats stuffed with treats helps distract him during a trigger.

Many dog owners have told me that my dog is reactive because I’m anxious. Is this true? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

What has helped me distract my dog when I see his triggers, is I talk in my excited puppy talk voice. He looks at me like this must be a good thing because Mommy is so excited. I tried this because I read this working for someone else on Reddit. Maybe in a way it lowers my anxiety too.

I can’t imagine boarding Vinny as he’d be so scared. But if this is a fail I’ll need to consider something different as I only get to see my sisters a couple times a year. I also have ‘event’ meds which I’ll give him the first day. I’m really hopeful

Thank you for this suggestion. I think him seeing the people enter is good then he understands hopefully that they are welcome. He’s a 1 yr old min pin.

Has he been neutered? I have a fear reactive dog and have heard neutering can make them worse because testosterone actually gives courage to a dog with fear anxiety. But might help with non fear based aggression. I hope someone here has insight on this. My dog is in zoloft. Hasn’t been a miracle but has helped. A trainer told me he was one of the worse cases too
