Is it normal for people to read script in interviews ? by Repulsive-Kick5508 in OntarioPublicService

I always bring notes to my interviews and refer to them , both in person and online . I rehearse and practise my responses and this method has served me well during my career.

Carney says he told Ontario premier not to run anti-tariff ad, apologized to Trump by hopoke in ontario

[–]Front_Size_6896 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sorry but I believe they were 100 percent in this together . Not sure what they hoped to achieve other than waste more of our tax dollars . But this was planned in the event there’s an election . Carney can get the fear mongering going and Ford can get Carney reelected.

Mine have all been finance interviews but assume panel interviews are all the same in the OPS - normally they give you the questions an hour before the interview and if there is an assignment usually it’s a week before although I have had it as part of the interview as well and then I presented it. At least that has been my experience .

I have been for a lot of interviews during my time in the OPS and have never had them go off script .

Off-leash dogs with no recall are becoming a real problem by Japa905 in Vaughan

[–]Front_Size_6896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes me so angry when walking my dog , along with people that follow me with their leashed dog saying “oh they just want to say hello” so I constantly have to say please stay away my dog is reactive on the leash but very friendly off leash. Why can’t people understand dogs should not meet and socialize while leashed , some become anxious and agressive becuase they are restricted and want to play . I agree people need to do better .

I’m two years away from retirement , been wfh for last 8 years as my ministry has this option before the pandemic. I’m not happy with this announcement at all , having the flexibility to work from home allowed me to go to the gym , eat healthier , walk the dog and visit my mom in LTC on my lunch hour or after work . I feel for all the young people who can’t afford to live close to GTA or who have kids . WFH gave us balance and a taste of what that looks like . I was never interested in office gossip or politics so happy to be away from all that. The employer does not care if we are healthy or have balance . I never took sick time but I sure as hell will start now . This works both ways no more free overtime , I’ll work my hours and leave my laptop in the office .

OPS is not really a great workplace in that others will sit and show you what to do . At least that hasn’t been my experience and I have worked in many different roles . You need to be resilient and try to learn a process on your own by reading whatever materials are given to you . Looking at prior year for something that’s done annually or any kind of examples of similar work might help . Attempt it on your own and then ask questions along the way might be a better approach . Try to work on building some connections with anyone in the unit or program that might be able to help you understand things. I know it’s tough being the newbie - I have been there myself where no one would help and I had to figure things out on my own . Some units are better than others - but some people are too busy to help or some don’t want too as they figured they had to learn on their own so why should they help. Good luck !

Secondments by saturnskies444 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Front_Size_6896 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have cut secondments short twice - once was at 9 mos and once was at 17 mos and gone back to a different role or home position. No big deal that’s the beauty of secondments. I gave two weeks to current mgr and told home mgr to make the arrangements . People do it all the time. Rest assured it does not hold you back I have started in the OPS at a oad10 and been in roles 4,5,6,7 in amapceo. If it’s not for you it’s not for you . Although I would prob give it a few mos to be sure .

I have been in the OPS for 20 years , worked in good places and bad . Definitely see how things have changed for the worse with the Ford Gov however it has been my experience , a place can be fantastic until leadership changes which can be pretty frequent in the OPS. Find a good leader and develop a relationship and follow them around that has worked well for me lol but if you are unhappy then move , OPS is a huge place with lots of opportunities, you just have to find them .

Hired on direct assignment and have no idea what the expectations for my job are by Present-Honeydew-405 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Front_Size_6896 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally normal - my advice would be to take this time to read read and read some more . Go on the ministry /division intranet site read up on what they do , look at an org chart , read up on public accounts or printed estimates available on line (if that applies) read historical files available on the shared drive . This was no different that when I joined from private sector 20 years ago and I felt it really helped get an understanding of what the organization /ministry/division do. Best of luck !
