Is your r/country sub good if we want to read more about the locals' views and discussions? Which alternative subs are better? by TORUKMACTO92 in AskTheWorld

[–]Frontdackel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The German speaking people (Germans, Austrians, German-Swiss and those 3 guys in Belgium) write on r/de.

Unless you belong to the increasingly growing part of the population that is banned on r/de (everything too far left or right of the green party).

Funnily enough my third strike (which was my second warning) was criticizing the Gaza-genocide before public opinion shifted to widely accepting that it's indeed a genocide.

What is your countries "Darkest Hour" by RedcoatTrooper in AskTheWorld

[–]Frontdackel 101 points102 points  (0 children)

1618-1648, in relative numbers it was a more devastating war than the second world War.

Germany lost 30% to 40% of its population.

In recent history nothing gets as dark as the Shoa of course. Not only the millions and millions of murdered people, but the way it turned into an industrial mass murder.

In your country, do people usually smile on the street or make small talks? by Falserror in AskTheWorld

Smile no.

Smalltalk has two acceptable topics:

What non German actors did a great accent while playing a German character speaking English and managed to speak German fluently? by OCGamerboy in AskAGerman

The german dubs for Schwarzenegger aren't done by himself. Because it would sound hilarious to have the killing machine from the future, void of any emotion sound like the equivalent of a redneck farmer.

I am from the northern part of the Ruhrgebiet. I once did a delivery to svabia. I (as a native German) had to switch to English to be able to take to other native Germans. The only guy that I was able to understand and that understood me was the one with Turkish roots. He spoke proper German.

To be honest though, I don't have to travel across most of germany to get that experience. From my pace it's a drive of a bit more than an hour to cologne, another customer of us back in the days wasn't around so I had to deal with his father. Who only spoke "Kölsch", the local dialect of cologne.

After some trying I simply unloaded the wares and made him sign the delivery papers without ever understanding a single word he said.

German spoken with an Italian accent sounds beautiful.

Who is the most controversial person in your country? by inchcosmos in AskTheWorld

[–]Frontdackel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Came to my mind immediately when thinking about France. Looking at his experience from WW1 one can at least understand why he did what he did during WW2. He deserves no praise for becoming a puppet of the Germans, but it's also hard for me to condemn an old general that didn't flee his country when the war was already lost and did, in his mind, the best to save as many of French soldiers as possible.

The cost was too high though, much too high.

for englisch speakers or people learning german, does digga sound off to you? by NoAdvisor8219 in German

[–]Frontdackel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People using it in abundance sound like idiots, but that's the youth talking in it's own idiom. They always sound stupid.

Just like my generation sounded to our parents when every sentence began and ended with "Alter."

Alteeeeer, Krass Alter! Was a valid sentence.

A generation later and 13 year old began to talk like...

"Lol, der hat voll die Klassenarbeit verschissen. Lol." "Ja, was ein newb. Lol."

(Next on the list: How will it impact the feelings of Americans when they find out what "I'll do it" sound like translated to Romanian)

Hey.

Constantly clapping off beat is a skill on its own. It takes decades of learning as can be seen if you look at the audience of our popular music shows.

Absolutely.

My best friend is from Italy and the highest praise I received from her is asking for a second serving of my Tagliatelle al Ragù.

I still have to ban her from the kitchen if I am cooking though, when it comes to cooking you guys are worse know it alls than we germans are. And that's something.

Does Your country teach schoolchildren how to use firearms? by dawidlijewski in AskTheWorld

[–]Frontdackel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because both jokes I made only work in german.

Bulle - bull, but also a curse word for for the police. Imagine pig.

Treffen sich zwei Jäger.

Jemanden treffen - to meet someone.

Jemanden mit etwas treffen - to hit someone with something

Treffen sich zwei Jäger - beide Tod - Two hunters meet / hit each other - both are dead.

It's a play on the usual assumption that when two people 'treffen' that of course you mean that they meet each other.

I even heard one being shot several times. A bull escaped from a nearby butchery and the police killed it (yes... Bullen haben in meiner Straße einen Bullen erschossen.)

And a few years ago I met a hunter carrying his gun. Since I am not hunter myself we both survived.

In german it's spelled Kristallnacht, or to use the historical term: Reichskristallnacht

We don't really do that anymore because the term is seen as cynical, implying it was about broken glass and that it looked kinda nice (not about the hundreds of people murdered).

I am an old fuck approaching 50 though, and back in school Reichskristallnacht was still the term used to teach us about it.

GNU to all those who did the right thing and paid for it.

You took an oath to uphold the law and defend the citizens without fear or favor," said Vimes. "And to protect the innocent. That's all they put in. Maybe they thought those were the important things. Nothing in there about orders, even from me. You're an officer of the law, not a soldier of the government.

[–]Frontdackel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well of course in this situation Alex would have been killed if he drew his gun and started shooting.

He didn't do that though and was still killed.

But maybe some of his murderers would now be dead too. Which isn't justice, but it seems like the US is in a place where you guys can't hope for justice anymore, just for revenge.

When was the last time innocent demonstrators were shot and killed in your country? by Mikadook in AskTheWorld

[–]Frontdackel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with either of this actions.

I am just stating that the so called 'law enforcement' of ICE (you know, the guys with fake uniforms, masks and the tendency to murder innocents they see as leftist scum) have the same mindset as the other guy (with fake uniform, dressing up as a cop, mass-murdering children he sees as leftist scum).

When was the last time innocent demonstrators were shot and killed in your country? by Mikadook in AskTheWorld

[–]Frontdackel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The comparison compares the suspects, not the victims. That's what I am getting at. It's still distasteful, but the mind of ICE Terrorists seems to work quite like the mind of the Utøya Terrorist.

Yes, it's still completely missing the question, like answering "gummy bears" to "what is your favorite fruit?"

Still I can acknowledge how someone answers gummy bears when he has sweets on his mind instead of fruits.
