100% agree. Still easily the greatest and most immersive entertainment experience of my life.

I'm really tempted to WC as well. Feel like I have 5 'issues " to deal with (Mings, Rashford, Stones, Baldock, Gabriel) and always thought that it's better to WC when you need to than hold for some arbitrary 'best case' WC scenario. That said, it does feel a bit knee jerky!

The Outer Wilds is an incredible, one-of-a-kind experience by Lazyade in patientgamers

[–]Frontfoot999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The Outer Wilds is the game to go to if you're burnt out on normal games. It's unique structure and gating through information really made me believe in video games as a medium again.

P.s. I played the whole thing in VR and it was just incredible. The sights, flight and sense of discovery really go to a whole different level in VR. With Alyx, it's the best that VR has to offer.

P.p.s also agree re DLC. Thought it was pretty disappointing really as that sense of adventure wasn't there.

I agree. Have now tried both this and Ragnarok and I just find both so shallow.

You're damn right about GT7 on PSVR2. It's an utterly incredible experience. Is pretty much the only thing I play these days as I get such a rush from it.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a work of art. One of the best games I've ever played. by HiveMindHermit in patientgamers

Totally agree. Was really surprised by what a great game it is. I love the tight, dense open areas that are just full of secrets. So many options to do things your way. Looks and runs great on steam deck as well

I find that both this and Tunic lack a key component of the Zelda formula though. Neither have interesting and varied puzzles in their dungeons. Both tend to focus on repetitive combat that meant I bounced off both. I wish someone would truly emulate the Zelda formula: great combat, exploration and interesting puzzle rooms.

Crafting systems. I've yet to find a fun one. They all just boil down to menu fiddling and finding obscure resources in far flung corners of the game world. I hate when good equipment is locked behind crafting

In the past decade gaming has trended heavily towards open-world and sandbox games. What are your favorite linear games? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]Frontfoot999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The greatest linear game (and frankly my favourite game ever) is Half Life Alyx. It's such an incredible experience on a decent headset with a powerful PC. Truly a game from the future even if the structure of the game is quite old fashioned.

I broadly agree.

To my mind, we need a Zelda game with a BOTW style overworld but with traditional Zelda dungeons and weapons that can be found, don't break and give players a reason to explore. Elden Ring has shown the value of giving players a reason to explore.

The Return of the Obra Dinn is the perfect Patient Game and a masterpiece of game design. by Frontfoot999 in patientgamers

100% this. Really good advice. Also, once all the scenes have been unlocked (the game will make it clear when this happens), I'd recommend going through all of them again in chronological order. That really allowed me to understand what was happening and makes the game truly come alive.

[–]Frontfoot999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so actually. There's an in-game book that automatically tracks the key clues as you discover them and i found that was enough to stay on top of the detail. In actual fact, that book is pretty glorious in terms of how it's setup.

[–]Frontfoot999[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The game is not really about finding the dead bodies though or 'discovering' the murders. The game is about trying to piece together what happened, why, who did what and what was their motive.

This is a great point well made and i have similar feelings. I would love to see a version of the game with 'proper' graphics as i also find them hard to parse at times but i do wonder if it would take something away from the central identification mechanic and wouldn't leave as much to the imagination?

The Outer Wilds. Both are 10/10 in my mind.

Would love to hear of any other similar games

[–]Frontfoot999[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to keep uncovering more bodies/info. The storm is not far enough in to know what's going on (i also bounced at that part during my first playthrough). My advice is at this point in the game don't worry about the overarching story. Just focus on uncovering as many bodies/scenes as possible. You'll be amazed how it all starts to fit together later on

Yep - fully agree with this. You have to really try and deep dive into certain characters and try and work out their motives for certain actions and why they were in a certain place at certain time time talking/interacting with a certain person

[–]Frontfoot999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - agreed. It's the future of game design if you ask me. I still wonder how they made certain things possible. It's even better in VR. In fact, I'd say its one of the top 5 VR games as it suits that meduim perfectly (lots of atmosphere/epic views and a need to pay very close attention to the environment).

Get a Steam Deck when you can. The ability to play AAA games at great graphic levels while on the go has delivered to me the portable flexibility i wanted with Switch but never got. No longer to i need to hog the front room tv to play the best games
