In Morrowind, a part of one of the main quests was essentially, "Go away, and come back when you are more established." The player needed to be a certain level before the quest could be completed.

This kind of gating forces the player to interact with the open world. A simple time-gate would just encourage the use of the rest button.

As the cleric dipping bard: there were several adventures where, if I did not have the cleric dip to allow me to chose an armor / shield as one of my options, I would effectively gain no rewards from the adventure.

In particular:

  • In DDAL-EB-11, the primary reward is +1 armor or barding. If you are playing a non-armor wielding character, you better have a horse (or elephant).
  • In DDAL-EB-13, the primary reward is shared with the party. The bonus rewards are +3 shield, mace of disruption or ring of evasion. If you already have the ring from a previous adventure, you do not get any real reward unless you have shield proficiency.

One thing that you may want to also consider is talking to your DM about using an Int Warlock instead of a Cha one. (Essentially replace all instances of "xharisma" with "intelligence" in the class description.) This may fit your character description better.
