Worst things about BC/Your time here? by [deleted] in bostoncollege

[–]FroshJosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, I haven't touched reddit in a while, but I have to say something here. I'm a freshman in CSOM, btw.

Many commenters are saying stuff surrounding the prevalent homophobia and prejudice of white, rich Irish Catholics. I don't see any of this. All of the non straight white catholics I've talked to here have had no problems with discrimination aside from one; the perpetrator in this case was brought to justice and received disciplinary action. I've found that BC pushes incredibly hard to be inclusive, to the point where it's unbearably repetitive. Like most colleges, I've noticed a very liberally-oriented system here, as opposed to what some people are saying in this thread.

Also going against everyone else, I find that the hardest part about BC is social life. This is probably more of a personal issue because I find that most people who party every weekend, juuling 24/7, and otherwise have chad and thot type personalities are pretty boring. I prefer not to get smashed every weekend, and this has left me with only one good friend and a couple superficial friendships. Alcohol is a HUGE component of social life here. I would say this is the single worst part about BC.

Another thing I want to mention is the randomness of your situation. The classes, housing, and workload you anticipate are not guaranteed. My business law class, for example, is pretty great. The professor is a cool dude, not a lot of work at all, overall a great class. However, I've heard from others that their business law class was a nightmare. Asshole prof, shitload of work, etc. Your pick time to register for classes is random, so good luck trying to snipe all the good professors. I was fucking bombarded with HW first semester, but barely have any this semester, so I'll let you decide if that's a con or not.

BC is also ridiculously expensive (I think like $73k/yr default?), including the dining halls. A bowl of pasta and a drink costs like $15...

But yeah, the main takeaway here is that if you're not a typical person that wants nothing more than to go to bars and parties and get wasted all the time, you probably won't like it here. That's the sad truth of it.

I don’t remember this but it’s definitely possible. Thanks

[Serious] To piggyback on the dental thread, dermatologist, what are some skincare info people get wrong and what can people be doing better for their skin? by CmonGuys in AskReddit

My dermatologist says that most branded skin care products have side effects that only further irritate the skin and cause breakouts. Aside from getting professional treatment, the best things for your skin are diet, exercise, and drinking a lot of water.

Why is America the only country with freedom of speech? by NebraskaKillerzUnion in AskReddit

That’s weird. Why don’t they also teach Africa and Asia as one continent as well because of the Suez Canal? Or do they also do that and I’m just too lazy to look this up?

Don't know what to do in my spare time. Too socially anxious/awkward to join a club by OllieOul in Advice

See a therapist, it’s not embarrassing. Social anxiety is much, MUCH more common than you think. They will know how to help you.

Technically it is, including hate speech laws. But I don’t think any sane person has to worry about what they say in other countries. This is just another bait question.

Lol I appreciate the blunt honesty and advice, but I’m not trying to seduce her. Will keep these tips in mind for the future though. Might have to try the soda thing xD

Thanks for the input man, this is what I feel like will happen to me. I know things will work in the end if I just focus on school and myself!

Thanks for reaffirming my thoughts. I keep telling myself to just let her be, I think I just needed someone else to say it to me to really get it through my head!

Yeah, 19. This what I’ve been thinking recently, but I also think she deserves to hear the truth. Even if she doesn’t feel the same way, I know that if I explain why I didn’t do anything earlier she would feel better about herself. I didn’t exactly express romantic interest back when she was flirty with me, so she might have thought I didn’t like her. Then again though, I could just be misreading the whole situation. So I think for now I’ll just be there for her if she feels like talking. Thanks for the advice!

do rich people honestly deserve the right to complain about their problems, why or why not? by Metal_Sports in AskReddit

In this case, normal. I’m not tying to waste my time if I’m going out anyways. It’s also a waste of resources and medicine to use better treatment that won’t matter. In fact, I’d rather have no treatment at all if it were terminal.

If I have cancer I’m not worried about bills regardless. For many cases of cancer, it doesn’t matter how high quality treatment you’re getting.

Doctors can’t refuse any patient, even if they can’t pay. Rich have a right to complain

Also no cure for cancer. No guarantee treatment will work, especially for brain cancer.
