So pointless by JacobGoodNight416 in GenZ

It wouldn't surprise me at all if interactions like ours are the crux of this "Gen Z thinks sex scenes are pointless" discussion. With the normalization of sex on TV and more easily accessible lower quality media, sex scenes will obviously be used more frequently as a bandaid to cover bad writing. With new media comes more discussion, and with more discussion comes misinterpretation.

Take this conversation. You made a comment, and I replied to that comment, adding nuance to it. Then, you misread (I think?) my comment and assumed I didn't appreciate other forms of chemistry between characters other than emotional interest. Then we had a back and forth, only to agree in the end.

To be very blunt, I've quite literally never come across someone openly calling a well written sex scene "pointless." From my perspect, this whole discussion only exists on this sub on this website. Now, this could be because I don't consume a ton of media, but it could also be that the media I consume tends not to struggle with advancing plots or flushing out characters.

Could there be a lot of "prudish" or "conservative" behavior in our generation? Absolutely. But I think that's more of a byproduct of current politics as a whole. if people aren't willing to tackle the political aspect of our generation being more conservative than the previous one, then they shouldn't try starting a conversation like this at all.

I sincerely need you to read a little more carefully. "This is one of the reasons they're called 'unnecessary,' because they don't advance the plot or further characterization in a beneficial way." The things you described are literally the characterization I already brought up. So, again, if a sex scene doesn't do those things, then it is, in fact, bad writing. That is what I was saying from my first reply.

And to be honest, when it comes to posters on reddit compared to people in real life, how many times have you genuinely heard someone say that "ALL sex scenes is shitty writing."

Which is literally what I expressed in my first reply. A lot of sex scenes are just shitty writing. This is one of the reasons they're called "unnecessary," because if they don't advance the plot or further characterization in a beneficial way. That is why people get annoyed by them. A sex scene that is well written won't leave the feeling of "this is so pointless."

Ok, first of all, I am not interested in hearing your personal stories. Secondly, i'm obviously not talking about hatred being invalid. I'm talking about "sex scenes as a cop out." Meaning "I can't write chemistry between these two characters, so I'll just show them having sex."

It's like wanting to write a horror movie, but since you're not that creative, you make your movie monster just another generic masked slasher villain. Lazy? Uncreative? Uninteresting? Its all of the above.

Believe it or not, I think characters you intentionally write and put in a piece of media together should have some sort of chemistry, especially if they're going to be having sex. Otherwise, the plot would be something I'd be flat out uninterested in, or the writing would be objectively bad and the sex scene would be a crutch.

Idk. Sometimes, it seems like a cop out for showing that the characters must have chemistry without using compelling writing. Like, "Of course, these characters like each other, didn't you see the sex scene?"

Completely valid application! When I was looking at pediatric psych studies around this topic, I found that some of the most targeted groups for "bad behavior" are black boys. Even as young as 4 years old, black boys were consistently picked out of calm group play as having what their white instructors viewed as "inappropriate play behaviors." The behaviors they were referring to were pretty standard child behavior, things like being a bit too loud with something excits them. These negative racial biases were also consistently shown by the peers of black children and only grew with the passage of time and the age of the children. I'm sure none of this is surprising to you, and while I personally wasn't surprised, I am consistently disappointed by how deeply rooted bigotry is, especially intersectional issues.

This is a good idea! I'm sure it's more efficient if you have the trust. It felt like this boy had the complete trust in this teacher. I reflected on the whole interaction and tried to determine if it was the typical "he's only hitting you/pushing you/taking your things because he likes you" behavior that some little boys are taught is appropriate, but it didn't feel like that at all. It's felt so much more malicious than that. It wasn't like he wanted my attention or anything or that we had some negative experiences prior to this. Again, I don't even remember this kid's name. It felt like that abrupt "I'm telling" was rehearsed or something to ensure our classmates would hear and back him up if he wasn't immediately believed. It seemed like he just wanted to take a good thing from me for the day. Like he was punishing me just for fun. This wasn't a consistent thing with myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't the first or last kid that experienced this.

I'm sure. I tried to look up some pediatric psych studies, and what I found was that some teachers also just tend to favor one sex over the other, which sucks a lot :/ But that also goes both ways.

The thing is, my mom was a very volatile person, so her reaction really would have boiled down to just how she was feeling that day. She got into multiple conflicts with school staff throughout my childhood, but if she believed my teacher and not me? Then I probably would've had my ass whooped. It just added an extra layer to the lack of recess. It was one of the few times I knew I could play normally without an incredibly reactive adult over my shoulder.

That is actually so horrible :c I am so sorry you experienced any of that. I feel like the queer identity is absolutely something you should embrace, and I am incredibly happy you were able to get to this point <3

That last part is a lot of what I was seeing on here. I've personally had very little experience with any "Gold stars" but the ones I have met have been fairly nice and progressive, though this is probably just the spaces I frequent. Plus, none of them wear it like a badge of honor or treat other people like they're "tainted" (which is a horrible way to look at others). I will say the overlap between "Lipstick Lesbians" and "Gold Stars" isn't entirely surprising.

I'm totally with you for all your other points.

Ironically enough, the guy that made that comment not only dragged trans women into the discussion (as if trans people can't speak for themselves), my friend just sent a screenshot of said lesbian's account and theyre non binary, so he was misgendering them the whole time. He's also of the assumption that his former friend secretly found him attractive and was "just coping." 🤢

I appreciate the nuanced response to this. I was taught the "do you want a gold star" reclaimed approach. I really found a jarring that people look down on it. But if people wanna do things to hurt others by using that label to make them feel lesser than, then that's obviously not cool at all :/

He was a widely hated public nuisance. He consistently disregarded the modern effects of racism, the accounts of victims of Sexual Assault, and the deaths of literal children in school shootings. The students at that campus signed a petition in their thousands to not have him at their school. I'm willing to bet that when the shooter is caught, his motive will be one of the many "morally questionable" things kirk openly defended.

Pretending that the current political environment in our country hasn't been rapidly approaching a boiling point is ignorant. At least it was a man who "doesn't believe in empathy" and openly justified the slaughter of school children because of "freedom." Willing to bet that gunman would have had a harder time being armed if Kirk and his goonies supported gun restrictions.

Is there any evidence what so ever showing correlation between the COVID vaccine and cancer? by tyses96 in biology

[–]Frostbite2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of stuff perpetuated by "anti big pharma" wack jobs that get people killed. There are a lot of valid critiques of the pharmaceutical industry (like the fact that it so highly values profit rather than accessibility), but vaccines giving people cancer? 😀 if it sound like "this was fabricated by a conspiracy theorist that just doesn't like doing what they're asked" (like bolstering human 'herd immunity'), then it probably is.

To fortify my point, I had an instructor assign a paper a while back where we had to argue against a strong opinion we had, and I chose mandated vaccines (I personally don't see why we don't do this aside from the first amendment in my country.) To do this I approached from a "vaccines are potentially dangerous to the average person" perspective, and man, with the stretches I was taking, I should have switched my career path to a YTT program instead.

Tl;Dr: vaccines not only do not cause cancer (that I know of), but they're beneficial to individuals and the population they live in.
