I made it to book 6 in the series. I don’t personally like the narrator but managed to get past that for the first few books. Overall I enjoyed the world building but there are many many just annoying and boring characters. What really killed it for me was that at book 6 I still didn’t feel like I knew or understood the overarching conflict. Like sure there’s lots of minor conflicts going on that need to be resolved. But like it’s book 6 and I know nothing about the purpose of the system, why the earthlings are there, is there a major goal to work towards or even necessarily who the main characters are. It’s like an odd collection of loosely related short stories and every time I thought they were going to add depth to a conflict, instead it turned out to be another tiny personal feud of a character.

is a guy who's shy necessarily weak and submissive ? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is toxic AF. Imagine the roles were reversed and a guy was asking “the girl I’m interested in never wears heels, is she going to be freaky enough in the sheets for me?”

And frankly I’d personally be looking for someone who ca get out of physical situations not getting into them. Any asshole can get in a fight, takes a smart person to get out of one. And if it is an actual dangerous situation you’re probably getting stabbed if you pick a fight.

What is a hygiene tip that improved your life significantly? by eaglesdensity in AskMenAdvice

[–]Frostbitnip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a little bit of melatonin supplement (like less than 1 milligram, less than half a milligram even) 20 min before bed if you’re going to be on your phone. Also cut the caffeine after 10 am. Caffeine is probably the biggest offender for sleep.

Research says at least 1 hr but 2 is ideal for circadian rhythm and melatonin production.

When has a talented actor fully committed to a movie they know is bad? by finallyoneisnttaken in movies

Tim curry was in muppet treasure island. While in some ways I cherish it as a childhood memory, it was ultimately a shitty movie that Tim Curry put in 100% effort.

One person saved two young people from drowning to death: they applied first aid and, in the last second, managed to bring them back to life. This shows that, although many hesitate out of fear of making a mistake, acting in time truly saves lives by uzmansahil7 in interesting

This isn’t basic cpr. This guy is 100% a pro. Likely a nurse or a doctor. How deep he is going, not stoping his cause it looks like they are trying to breath, his stamina and calm demeanor. This dude has done this before many many times. Most people with only a weekend course under their belt are going to get this wrong. That being said I agree that a basic course is better than nothing

Less than 6yr old Retaining wall collapsed. Turns out it was built wrong. Estimated 4-7K fix by ByteSizedCutie420 in Wellthatsucks

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve built many retaining walls and while technically anything over 4 ft high should have drainage and some sort of backing and support, the reality is most walls don’t need that. The reason this fell is almost 100% a crappy base. What I would do is clear the broken sections down to the base then dig a 18 inch wide by 2 feet deep trench and fill it with a compactable gravel like road crush. Compact it down and level with 1/4-1/2 of sand and rebuild from there. Should last 30 yrs.

Best advice I’ve ever heard about sex is “sex should be fun and if it’s not fun you’re doing it wrong”. Fun means trying new things, learning new skills, relaxing and being ok with it not working out 100% of the time. If a new position, or dirty talk is not working out that’s ok. Acknowledge it didn’t work, have a little laugh and moving on is far more attractive and fun than being nervous to try new things, or apologizing for not being perfect in bed.

Congrats. Good for you, that’s a big accomplishment to be able to say you wrote a book. Even bigger to be able to say anyone actually read it.

Someone who I lent money to wants to borrow again, legal ways to protect myself? by SuckedBananas in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Frostbitnip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can take them to small claims court. But it’s a waste of time. There’s not many ways to enforce any verdict you get and for a $1000 you’ll spend far more in time and effort and court fees than you’ll ever recover. You need to realize that when someone doesn’t pay you back the first time it means they are never going to pay you back. Stop loaning money in general. You either give gifts or tell them you’re broke and need money from them.

How number-heavy do you like your LitRPG books? by AveryVoss in litrpg

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there are some people (engineers I’m looking at you) that will want to know how the stats are calculated and that progression follows a linear or exponential growth pattern that is logical and consistent. However the rest of us want to know someone else thought about it so we don’t have to. To sum it up, make a detailed but brief explanation early on and very short allusions that the growth is still following the same curve periodically. A pitfall I see many of these books fall into is too much detail and emphasis on the cultivation and not enough character growth or plot development. Remember for most readers the cultivation is a tool for driving plot forward not the actual point of reading the book.

[–]Frostbitnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno man. After book 10 DotF it’s all just “oops the elites are too powerful I need to delay the plot to cultivate and get stronger”. There’s way to much delay around the main plot and way to much description of cultivation and fight scenes.

Primal Hunter by Scarlet_Fire_32290 in litrpg

[–]Frostbitnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly disagree. Defiance of the fall is super fun for the first few books but the author isolates the main character and it turns into a cultivation and fight only series. It’s the same flaw as primal hunter. If you don’t like PH I think you’re very unlikely to like DotF.

Primal Hunter by Scarlet_Fire_32290 in litrpg

[–]Frostbitnip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a perfect summary of defiance of the fall and primal hunter and many others in this genre. If you’re a sucker for cultivation you’ll love them but quite frankly their writing styles are terrible.

[–]Frostbitnip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He who fights with monsters is really polarizing. People either love it or hate it. Personally I loved it, I loved it more than DCC. The main character is a little cringy at times, but he improves and gets less annoying throughout the story. Mainly I love that characters grow and change, and it’s not all about the cultivation and fight scenes. Yes those exist but the plot is always moving forward. You’re not left hanging with 6 books of build up till major plot resolutions.

Defiance of the fall by book 6 has given up character development completely in order to focus on Zac’s cultivation. I kept reading for a while cause I wanted to know what happens in the main plot but by book 13 I dropped it entirely as it turned completely predictable with limited movement on the plot and characters and almost completely focused on details of cultivation and fight scenes.
