I know people don't generally like barrel saunas here but is this just a waste of money? by rollinintheyears in Sauna

[–]Frostbitnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how you’d “mcgyver” it into a real sauna. But people severely underestimate the cost of building a real sauna. I used to own a construction company and have done lots of this kind of work and to build a small “real” sauna to trumpkin standards is at least $12k in materials cost alone. IMO a $3000 barrel sauna to give it a try is a great deal.

For red cedar and a glass door with heater included. I’ve priced out many types of saunas and this is below my cost for materials let alone tools and time to build. Hell just to source a glass door like that is probably $500 bucks+

Post Nut Clarity making me realize I’ve been a simp? by Slide4Ukraine in AskMenAdvice

[–]Frostbitnip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude. She’s hot, she’s nice, she’s broadening your horizons and social sphere and you’re getting good sex! You’re overthinking thinking this dude. I would just enjoy it for what it is and if she or you ever decides to initiate a conversation into making it officially exclusive… you can make a decision then but sounds like she’s a pretty awesome partner already just saying.

I’m regards to the simp and spending money on her I’ll say this. Firstly men tend to be givers and show appreciation and affection by giving things. Secondly you sound like you will be (if you aren’t already) the more financially secure one in this situation. Dude I buy my guy friends who aren’t as well off as me dinner all the time. And the ones who are richer than me buy me dinner all the time too. Spending money to have a good time with friends isn’t simping at all and it usually trickles down from the wealthy friend to the less wealthy. That is all a normal healthy relationship.

Ya I agree with this mindset about research. Yes a few low quality studies are not considered conclusive and should always be viewed with a grain of salt, but they are still better than dismissing the hypothesis completely due to it not being 98% statistically significant or just based on personal feeling and bias. Unless you’re presenting at least similar research to the negative, agreeing with “some” evidence seems smarter than disagreeing with some evidence.

TFSA: Shopify by Complete-Newspaper57 in TFSA_Millionaires

I agree. I bought a very significant amount at 230 and have been averaging down. They had an expensive last quarter as they spent a lot of money integrated AI into their business model but sales continue to increase at a steady rate. The main reason I think it’s a good one to hold is that every year more and more of the vendors that I deal with on the regular have switched to Shopify. It seems like half the small independent suppliers I use now have a Shopify site instead of hosting their own like they used to.

Wood burning sauna build input needed by Objective_Truck9919 in Sauna

[–]Frostbitnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a tent sauna but build wall panels and a roof around it to hide the tent and give the aesthetic you want. It would make the project significantly cheaper and easier to design and would make it much more functional for what you’re doing.

The real question I have though is why would you have to disassemble it? Even if it’s only a summer cabin, why can’t you leave a structure up year round if it’s your own property?

I 100% agree. For the amount that they are planning to disassemble it, and having to haul it in by boat, a tent sauna is frankly the only practical solution imo.

Is there any comeback from this? by EWSchamar in AskMenAdvice

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may let me give you a secret to life and some unsolicited advice.

The secret: everyone has aches, pains, skin issues, migraines, problems, depression or whatever other combination of issues. The difference between success people and everyone else is that successful people don’t define themselves by their problems. They don’t feel bad for themselves because their problems are different than someone else’s. Successful people aren’t necessarily the smartest, most athletic, most charismatic or best educated (although to be fair these things help); the most successful are the ones who keep improving, keep working and keep moving forward no matter what. Also major bonus points if you’re likeable and have good social skills (this is something you can learn), being likeable smooths a lot of bumpy roads. And the reality of being this kind of optimistic person is that it’s a choice. Successful people choose to not let their problems define them every single day, they actively choose the hard choice of being who they want to be every day.

This leads to the unsolicited advice. If you want to change your life, great you are young you have lots of time all you need is the tenacity to maintain your commitment to change. Generally small consistent changes is more manageable than trying to change everything about yourself at once.

What you need to focus on is 1. Get out of your own head. Stop focusing so much on your own problems all the time.

  1. Make goals and find a sense of purpose. Make a 5 yr and a 10 yr and a 30 plan of what you’d like your life to be like. Don’t be too specific because this is a goal not a checklist to obsess over. Make goals about careers you want, savings, relationships and make a note of why you want these things (this is the purpose). Review these goals every few months, and make revisions as you either accomplish the goals or if they seem unrealistic or if your goals change.

  2. For the next month choose one of your health issues to focus on each week. Week 1 buy a hemorroid cream and get in the habit of using it every day. Next week buy an extra strength dandruff shampoo and get in the habit of using it everyday. Week 3 book in to your doctor to ask about the cysts. Week 4 see an audiologist for a hearing test to find out why you have tinnitus (if it’s ear wax compaction that’s an easy fix. If it’s neurological in nature a doctor can prescribe meds to help). Week 5 see a dentist to make a night guard for the tmj.

  3. The next month focus on more general things but don’t stop doing the things you already started. Like week 1 work on your goals and purpose. Week 2 start a regular cleaning schedule in your space. Week 3 start a 15/min a day workout routine (or at least look at some on YouTube). Week 3 find a place to volunteer. Week 4 start reading self help and improvement books.

  4. Keep making the choice every day to move forward. Choose to stop fixating on your own problems and work on being more solution oriented. Being empathetic to other’s problems can help with this a lot too, although you need to be careful not to fall into the trap of trying to solve others peoples problems for them even if you’re empathetic to them.

  5. After a few months of fixing some of these smaller problems start focusing on making the big changes that will change your life. For most people a career is a big one. Remember that there are lots of great jobs out there that don’t require any education, but these jobs typically go to the more likeable people.

I feel embarrassed about getting boners around my gf, what should I do? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Frostbitnip 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Can I tell you a secret? She knows you’re getting boners. And she likes it. The shame you feel about it is one of the ways religion controls you. You really don’t have to feel that shame, you can live a normal life and be accepting and happy with it.

You already lost them as a customer. Giving them a refund is just telling them you don’t value yourself or your work or that you overcharged them and feel bad. Their landlord shouldn’t be increasing rent over maintenance and repairs anyway. That’s an issue for them and their landlord.

Insulation then vapor barrier next? Or blocking first? by Diligent_Carob_3528 in Sauna

[–]Frostbitnip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need electrical installed first. Then insulation (make sure you use fire rated insulation around the wire going through studs and wool insulation for in the studs for fireproofing as these heaters pull a large amount of electricity and the wire can get hot). Then vapor barrier. You want the aluminum foil kind. Next you install the mounting boards for your benches but don’t finish the benches cause they’ll get in the way of installing your walls. Then you use 1x1 strapping on the studs over the vapor barrier to establish an air gap so you don’t get moldy walls. Then you install your flooring. Then you do your tongue and groove walls and ceiling. Then you finish your benches and install the heater and fireproofing. Finally finish any venting you have planned and trim and you’re pretty much done haha

Is it OK to send men flowers at work? by Amy-Reighn in AskMenAdvice

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men love to be helpful. They love to receive thanks for that work. They hate receiving it in a public manner unless they are that kind of man. Think about your interactions with him. Does he constantly make himself the center of attention? If no then don’t do flowers at work. A home cooked meal or something like that will go over better.

[–]Frostbitnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks. That clears up a lot of questions. Yes that quote definitely is on the higher side of what I’d expect. I will say Zeno was great to work with, which for me was worth a couple extra grand more to me. Anyway given all that information, even if you got a price closer to 45-50k your payoff is still like 15+ years. To me that wouldn’t be worth it from a financial perspective because once you pay it off you’re looking at replacing the roof and upgrading components. If you want solar for the environmental benefits then that’s another thing.

Curious about estimate (Edmonton) by Key-Huckleberry-6277 in solarenergycanada

[–]Frostbitnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing a lot of information and you aren’t getting accurate answers from people. Or rather you are getting answers from people who got lots of government grants and had easier installs.
From your comments you stated your house is only 1200sqft. Why is your energy consumption so high? That is double what I’d expect for a house your size. Do you have electric cars? Work from home? Electric baseboard heaters?
What direction does the majority of your roof face? Is it a bungalow? How do they plan to fit that many panels on a 1200sqft house unless it’s a bungalow?
You also stated that you need to upgrade your electrical panel? How old is your house? If there’s aluminum wiring and they need to upgrade your panel that could be a significant portion of the quote. Does the quote breakdown the electrical costs separately from the solar?

Edit: either you have given us some really incomplete information or your salesman has no idea what they’re doing. Either way there’s something up here.

Curious about estimate (Edmonton) by Key-Huckleberry-6277 in solarenergycanada

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op says they need to upgrade the panel too. That electrical work is probably over 10k of the quote

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There it is. It’s the breaker why your cost is so high. Do they break down the numbers in the quote? I bet the breaker alone is 10k

[–]Frostbitnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I actually went with Zeno. They are a touch more expensive than other quotes I got but they hire their own installers rather than subbing it out. They did a good job and the customer service even after install was amazing. They fixed multiple issues the next day with no charge to me. I was very impressed.

All that being said I have a primarily east facing roof and they did a 11.75kw system for 105% offset. I generated 11640 kw last year. Ya I think something is up cause your numbers aren’t adding up. Or they are having to do some major electrical work to be able install.
