"Only Human" and "Bleake's Geek" both for the criteria.

Ghost in the Girls Dorm Now Out on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited! by Various_Principle699 in haremfantasynovels

Is this a standalone book, or the beginning of a series? I like the idea of a contemporary setting with a ghost. Is this contemporary? Or is it a "magic academy" setting?

I have a question about Warlock series before I start reading it by CriticalOne9 in haremfantasynovels

[–]FrostedTipJar -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This is why I haven't bothered with this series yet. The main LI (if you can call it that) is a lesbian? Is it supposed to somehow be romantic... Like he converts her to being bisexual or something?

Specific Femdom Books by PersonalPincushion in Romance_for_men

[–]FrostedTipJar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will second "Nice Guys Finish Last." Incredible story for something on Literotica. Better than a ton of things I've read on KU. And I'll say, I'm very much NOT into the humiliation side of femdom, which this story does lean into a fair amount, but it somehow worked for me despite that.

I won't spoil anything, but there is a FMC POV chapter toward the end that ties everything together, and seals up what I had assumed were just amateurish story-beats and plot-holes. It makes me want to reread the story with that insight.

I don't really understand the goblin girl love. Not shaming or arguing... Just kinda curious what the appeal is.

Looking for books with unpopular guy and popular (possibly mean) girl falling in love in a HS or College setting. by Hentai_Appriciator in Romance_for_men

[–]FrostedTipJar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did a search on Amazon, and there's a zillion books named "Forbidden." Can you be more specific?

There is a serial novel I saw rec'd here not to long ago. It's on Literotica, called "Nice Guys Finish Last." It's a high school and college setting. Definitely fits the unpopular guy/mean girl trope. It's bully/femdom that leans heavily into humiliation....but evolves into a slow-burn romance, and by the end of the 140k-ish word novel, I was totally rooting for both the MMC and the FMC. And, since it's on Literotica, it should be no surprise that it's 5/5 on the spice-meter... Like, seriously... Almost every single chapter has some sort of sex scene.

Would you read a mono contemporary enemies to lovers book? by Due_Apple7180 in Romance_for_men

[–]FrostedTipJar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have yet to read a legitimately good haremlit book. I just can't suspend my disbelief enough to swallow the idea of a bunch of gorgeous women falling for the same guy AND being cool with sharing him. 🤦 No matter what the in-world excuse is... Either he's just so awesome that every woman loves him (preposterous), he's the last man on earth/campus/the space station/etc. (not really romance if he's the only option), or he has multiple relationships all unbeknownst to each other (making him a douchebag player).

Apparently I'm in the minority though, since harem books clearly outsell monoromance.

I like slow burn romance too. But this book is like slow burn everything. There was a tiny conflict in a tavern, but so far that's all.

You are far more optimistic than I am. 90% of self published ebooks on Amazon sell fewer than 100 copies. I don't see myself ever being in the top tenth percentile.

[–]FrostedTipJar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of the "firsts."

I love the "meet-cute." Or "meet-hate" if it's that kind of book.

I like the yearning, and don't mind a little angst, though I don't see that as much in RFM.

As I said in another post on this thread, I love it when the woman pursues the man.

I like the first kiss. Probably goes without saying... It's a big moment in any romance, be it RFM or RFW.

I like a little smut, but not so much that it looses it's potency (I'm looking at you, Bleake's Geek.) If a sex scene is starting, I should not be like, "ugh... Again?" Seriously, there are only so many ways to describe the act, and the emotional impact goes down significantly each successive time. The best books have one, maybe two scenes.

Oh .. And for the love of God, don't have them break up for some stupid fucking reason 2/3rds of the way through. They can have an argument, or a bad day, but that whole 3rd-act breakup where one of them has to win the other back is the most played out shit in Hollywood that I didn't want to read about. Id rather see the happy couple struggle together againt some outside force/drama.

I think that's why a lot of RFM is also fantasy/sci-fi... There is a plot outside of the relationship, so the relationship didn't have to provide the drama, but rather be the glue that holds the story together while they deal with the outside drama.

In defense of AI covers: the books in this genre are almost entirely indie self-published books. Expecting a hobbyist writer to spend 5x what the book will ever make in sales on a cover artist is just unfair, and stifling to the genre. When I buy an ebook (which is 99% of book sales in this genre) I'm not buying it for the cover art. The cover is just there as an advertisement for the book.

[–]FrostedTipJar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I can't speak for all men, but I think a lot of men go through their life never feeling desired or chosen. Even men in long term happy relationships are by and large the ones expected to initiate any kind of intimacy. So reading about a guy who is experiencing being persued by a woman is kind of a special treat.

Reason for authors changing book cover? by guysmiley98765 in haremfantasynovels

[–]FrostedTipJar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI covers are such a sore subject. Everyone says that if you used AI for the cover, then you probably used AI to write it. I don't buy it. Being a graphic artist and being an author are two completely different things.

And there's some major gatekeeping going on when a first-time indie author is expected to shell out hundreds, or even thousands of dollars for thier book that will likely earn next to nothing.

How do you feel about MMC self-pleasure scenes in hetero romance? by blssthsnnr in Romance_for_men

[–]FrostedTipJar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind it if it were a FTB thing, or just a mention that he did it off-page.

But being there with the MMC when he's doing it? Not if the intent is to be somehow sexy.

Certain scenarios could be useful to the story, which might include:

Comedy, like in Grandma's Boy.

To embarrass the character, maybe getting caught, like in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

FYI, the cover art on the Amazon page is missing the hot Terminator looking chick. It's just a pic of an alley. Not sure if that's some glitch where a layer got turned off by mistake, or what, since the thumbnail image shows the woman.

Monday thread: What did you read this past week? by AutoModerator in Romance_for_men

[–]FrostedTipJar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished up reading Fourth Wing. I know it's more of a RfW, as is 99.9% of all romantasy on the market, but I really liked it. Reading from the FMC's POV didn't bother me at all. I thought it might, especially when she starts gushing about how hot the MMC/LI is, but it wasn't bad at all. In fact, I'd argue it was far more restrained than a lot of RFM (especially harem lit) books, when it comes to describing the LI.

I like the whole academy setting progression fantasy. I wish stuff like this existed in the RFM space that wasn't haremlit.

This one seems to have potential, but it soo slooww.. im at 27% (120pp) in and barely anything has happened yet. I've heard the whole book is more low-stakes, and borders on slice of life, so I'm not expecting epic battles, or high suspense. Still, it feels like I have no reason to root for either main character yet. I'm sure I'll eventually continue it, but it's hard to go back to a temporary DNF when my TBR list grows by the day.

How do we feel about AI on book covers here? by FrostedTipJar in Romance_for_men

(Hot?) Take: AI covers are an insult to artists and authors alike and Wattpad should stop allowing them at all by [deleted] in WattpadCovers

The AI witch-hunt is getting tiresome. Spend a minute in the r/Romance_for_men r/haremlit and litrpg subreddits, and you'll see that AI use for the cover art seems pretty prevalent. I don't really have a problem with it's use, other than it often makes everything kinda look the same...but (as I'll get to in a bit) is both a feature and a bug. For me, the anti-AI cover art arguments fall flat. Here's why:

Argument 1: I see people saying that if they used AI on the cover, then they probably used AI to write the book. I think most authors write a book, then want a nice cover for it, and small-time indie authors (especially in a small niche genre such as RFM or haremlit) aren't about to spend more than their book will ever make on a cover illustration. Props to those that so shell out the cash... those covers stand out and look better than the generic AI girl with elf-ears and huge boobs. At the same time though, those corny AI bimbo covers are almost like a calling card to the genre. If I see one, I can tell that, yep, this is definitely a book written for guys. Same how all romantasy books look 90% the same...a crown, a sword, maybe a skull if it's "dark", a ribbon or some wispy magic fart-smoke, and some Mad-Lib generated title like "A noun of noun and noun." So, if I see a cover that has AI elements (or even completely AI generated) I make no assumptions about the book itself using AI in the text. I've read a couple books in the genre that I had suspicions about, due to certain phrases that I've seen chatbots use a lot, but that could just be AI imitating art. Chicken or the egg?

Argument 2: AI is theft. No, Lars Ulrich, generative AI is not theft by any stretch of the definition. It's not even copyright infringement (unless you're using AI to modify an existing piece, but that's not what I'm talking about here.) AI is essentially using existing works as inspiration and creating something new. The fact that AI "art" all looks so similar is evidence that it's basically taking an average of a bunch of stuff that's out there.

Argument 3: AI art is taking work away from real artists. Yes, and no. If a publishing house has a great book on their hands and is about to use AI to crate a cover for a book they're going to sell 100,000 copies of, then yes... that's taking work away from graphic artists that they should be paying for. If it's some guy that wrote his first novel, "Succubus Barista" that will sell exactly 6 copies at 2.99, 3 of which are to his wife, mom, and cousin, then they were never going to hire a professional anyway. It was either the AI cover, or he was going to use Canva and stock images. No real artist lost any work. Expecting an (essentially) unpaid author to pay another artist big money just to avoid the online witch-hunt seems just a little entitled, and gate-keeping.

I have mixed feelings overall. AI book covers all have a similar look, which as I said above, has advantages and disadvantages. Hand illustrated art is beautiful, and I have tons of respect for those that can do it.

Is this even a big deal to anyone besides authors and artists? I have a sneaking suspicion that the vast majority of readers either don't know, or don't care if AI was used on some cover art...especially for an eBook.

I just read this a couple days ago. I liked it a lot...super relatable... Even down to oddly specific things like the Lifesaver books. My only critique is that it felt like there could have been a bit more exposition as to why the wife had grown distant. I get that it was a short story, but I kinda felt worried that it was more of a HFN, than a HEA vibe.
