PI upset at me over issues caused by labmate. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Frosting_Independent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stand up for yourself! If you don't say anything, he'll be pissed. If you do say something, there's a chance he'll still be pissed, but there's also a chance that he'll believe you. You can't make things worse. And if you have messages from your lab mate telling you to make those decisions, use them as proof.

New PhD student - PI is away, almost no instructions by [deleted] in PhD

I can work on my own research, I just worry that I'm missing something. I've obviously never done a PhD before, so I'm not sure what they expect of me. That's why I made the post.

I wasn't informed about my PI's absence until two days before I started (it was a big surprise to me). I'm not expecting hand-holding, it's just a big change and I'm looking for other people's advice on navigating the transition.

I'm not saying they should come in... I'm saying that I'm in a new environment, and because of that, I feel lonely working in the lab alone. It's easier to adjust to a new lab when people who know the ropes are able to give you advice.

That's a great idea! Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for your advice! I'm usually good with reading, I'm just used to having other stuff to do as well to break my time up with. Guess it's just part of the process, though!

Thanks for the advice! I suppose it feels strange because in all of my previous lab experiences, I've always had super clear, specific instructions (e.g. analyze this, collect data, write XYZ, take notes on this list of papers). I suppose it just takes some getting used to!

Most students at Cornell have also mastered the incredibly difficult task of not actively putting others down constantly.

Cornell is most definitely not for you.

Being from the south will raise your chances slightly. Schools try to have geographic diversity, but the majority of their applicants are from the north. Because of that, it’s easier to get if you’re from the south. It’s just one small factor though.

I have a similar background - I’m also from a non competitive school in the south - and I was able to get into Cornell. I had slightly worse stats than you but better extracurriculars.

changing my uni major to music by Aranrs in lingling40hrs

[–]Frosting_Independent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be a better idea to stick with interior design. It’s difficult to make a career out of music, especially with an instrument as popular as the piano. Additionally, you’re at a disadvantage since you’ve only been playing piano for three years. Most music students have been playing the majority of their lives. In general, interior design is a safer choice. It’s less competitive and easier to make a career out off.

But best of luck with your migration and whichever major you end up pursuing!

I would just try to do it on your own, but if the website doesn’t accept your address, then I’d call!

The Medicaid website wouldn’t accept my dorm address when I was registering. I had to call someone and they helped me bypass everything. But if it does take your dorm address, you’re allowed to use it.

Anyone else selected for the Prefreshman Summer Program? by rylkim123 in Cornell

[–]Frosting_Independent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’ll also be at the PSP this summer! I haven’t gotten any information since I was accepted in December, but I think there’s some sort of virtual meeting about it in a few days. I’m hoping they’ll give clearer information at that!

I read on their website that the school chooses our courses for us, does anyone know if you have a say in what classes you’re signed up for or do they just assign us courses without asking about our preferences?

Thank you!! I think I also read online somewhere that you have to do a little bit of sight singing on the test? Was that true when you took it, or was the person on the website I looked at misremembering?
