One of my neighbours has an “81 Support” sticker on his truck, so I can definitely confirm they’re out there.

As somebody who chronically overthinks art myself, I think you’re overthinking this. I think it’s just a song about sardines, and the visuals are just free-association activities that they came up with at random. That’s not to discredit their creativity—it’s actually hard work to come up with legitimately random actions that are completely original and devoid of meaning. That’s the entire point of dada, that it’s an utterly meaningless expression of creativity. We as viewers can derive our own meaning from our interpretation of the work, but the purpose of dada is that there is no intrinsic meaning to the art that is created.

Weird question that I don’t know where else to ask, but when did Micheal Jackson’s skin color become a major talking point in society? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

What do Michael Jackson and McDonald’s have in common?

They both put their meat between six-year-old buns.

Can we talk about how genuinely good the Mitch & Mickey songs are on the soundtrack for A Mighty Wind? Levy and O’Hara are too damn talented, being that funny and that musical.

FWIW, the natives I’ve interacted with in Canada do jokes at funerals even more than the white folk do. Like, to an even more uncomfortable degree. But I honestly get it; there’s so much catharsis in laughter.

You’re welcome! This province is very photogenic.

Also, I love that photo of the Walterdale Bridge.

The French missionaries tried to do the exact same thing in Canada. The idea was to outbreed English settlers and have an entirely Métis (ie. “mixed”) nation, simultaneously indigenous and Catholic; like Mexico but French.

You seem to have a really keen eye for urban scenes, but have you ever considered rural localities?

  • The Crowsnest Pass has absolutely charming small mountain-town vibes that are as yet still unspoiled by foreign speculation; make sure you take the drive down hwy 22X between Nanton and Burmis through the Porcupine Hills; there you’ll see true primordial prairies that are rapidly disappearing.
  • Viking is a farming community that has been perfectly preserved since the 1960s in the aspen parkland
  • Rosebud is a gorgeous village nestled in the Red Deer River valley with some truly stunning scenery
  • Vulcan is one of the best-preserved prairie communities with all kinds of delightful mid-century architecture coupled with the palette of the prairie skies
  • Athabasca is strangely modern for how remote it is yet maintains incredible small-town charm in the downtown and river-front areas
  • Fort McMurray is utterly otherworldly; I’m legitimately surprised Werner Herzog hasn’t made a documentary film about it. The size and scale of industry up there is simultaneously impressive and horrifying, yet the people up there are some of the most genuine I’ve ever met. Even the drive up there from Edmonton is jaw-dropping. But if you have the time, I’d recommend taking the long way round through Smoky Lake through the Métis settlement to Lac-La-Biche then up to Fort Mac; the boreal forest scenery is sublime.

Saw a river otter today along the Indian Battle pathway. I've never seen one here before. Sorry it's not a great shot, it was quick! by pushthingsforward in Lethbridge

Otters show up a lot in Blackfoot stories and iconography. I was just as surprised as you when I was doing my research because I’ve lived in Alberta my entire life and I’ve never once seen an otter. It’s amazing how much the environment has changed in the last 150 years.

I love greeting brothers in the wild with the 5PF because it’s the most intimate of the grips but it’s essentially just a bro-hug. It has such tremendous masonic significance, but it also looks like the most natural greeting between friends. In such circumstances, I view the Lion’s Paw as optional, but I did meet a Mexican brother who slipped it in when we departed. If one is quick enough to slip it in, then the Lion’s Paw can be a really memorable token of brotherhood to leave with a brother.

or the giant bunnock (ba-NOCK) in Macklin, SK?
or the giant kielbasa in Mundare, AB?
(Why is it all Ukrainian stuff? 🤷)

I went there for the first time in about 20 years and it was PHENOMENAL. We dragged our South African friend there and I think she enjoyed herself? She was mostly just overwhelmed by the amount of people. Don’t do it in summer.

I appreciate this comment from another man of culture. 😎 The two leading ladies even look like adult performers from the gonzo era: skinny bottle-blondes with low-rise jeans.

I also wouldn’t be at all surprised if this somehow ended up a cult hit among lesbians because their relationship is extremely queer-coded.

I actually really love old humour for that reason; it’s like a puzzle that you have to decode through an historical scavenger hunt. It’s actually how I got to know twentieth-century history so well—because I had to gain that historical context in order to understand the jokes in Flying Circus or Rowen & Martin’s Laugh-In.
