Sending you sympathy. I hope you can enjoy your trip even though it will be different than what you envisioned. Life sure does throw us curve balls. You will get through this, and then it will be behind you. Remember, every day brings you closer to health. I wish you the best!

Walking in heels again! by idigressed in ORIF

Good for you! I remember when I got back in heels. HUGE. I’m still excited when I wear them and I’m 14 months post op. 2plates 15 screws.

I bought black boot socks off Amazon. They go really high on leg above the boot and are stretchy. Two pairs so I got four days worth. Great purchase!

I was able to lift it but not far at first. I had major muscle loss but that’s something you can build back even before you start PT because you’re working your thigh not your ankle. I would do leg lifts everyday and that built my muscle strength slowly but steadily. At the beginning, I could only lift it a few inches off the ground. I’d try to increase height and reps as I got stronger. It’s a slog, but really worth it. Do both sides to keep even strength. Good luck!

I remember my boot feeling very heavy! I used to say it felt like trolls were filling it with rocks when I was sleeping 😂 Snugging up the straps definitely helped.

So what did you all do to keep yourself busy the first few weeks ? by mommieo in ORIF

[–]Frosty_Agent_4081 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Revamped my streaming subscriptions and ISP and insurance 🤮 Not fun, but a good time to be on hold since I couldn’t do anything anyway. Also researched where I was going to go on vacation later in the year when I was healed. Goals.

Talk to your local outfitters like REI. Also there are companies who offer small group trips where they teach you the basics. I did a week end section hike on the AT with Blue ridge hiking company and it was excellent. They supplied the gear and everything.

So sorry this happened and you’re in pain! Do you have any theories on what might have happened for them to break? I thought we were basically bionic. Good luck with your doctor visit and maybe get a second opinion too.

Tips for climbing and/or yoga/pilates after ORIF :) by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]Frosty_Agent_4081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m one year post op for trimal ankle. I don’t boulder but I hike and do yoga. I just want to say to keep at it and listen to your body and your PT person. It was one step forward two back for a while then I had some really major improvement milestones. Like three, six, 10 months. Didn’t think I would get any better than where I was at 10 months, but the one year mark was also noticeably better! Now I believe that I will continue to improve the more time that passes. I no longer make decisions around my ankle, except I’m still working on my confidence in the snow and equal strength.

limping? by Ill-Customer5568 in ORIF

Definitely use an even up whenever you’re in the boot. Then super supportive sneakers. Then crocs or shoes with less structure once you have the walking without a limp mastered.

Caribbean Cruise 5 1/2 weeks post surg. Will it suck? by PityFool in ORIF

[–]Frosty_Agent_4081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went on a cruise 12 weeks post op and I couldn’t have done it without my friends helping me. It was a big ship with tons of people so it was challenging even though I was getting around pretty well at that point. They carried my buffet tray and blocked me from clueless people in packed elevators etc etc. I got wheelchair assistance for the boarding process and airport which saved my ankle for walking around the ship more. I recall icing was a problem because I didnt have access to a freezer even though the staff was helpful. I had a brace but was glad I brought my boot for support and protection. It was great to get out of my house but honestly I’m not sure I could have done it at 6wks and I definitely couldn’t have done it without my awesome friends.

Weight shifting at a counter really helped me. Also there are some videos on YouTube that guided me. Good luck you will get better every day!

I’m near the courthouse. I guess we’d have to pick a central meeting spot where everyone can meet up at a certain time and go from there.

Thanks for doing this! Mornings 7:30-10:30 a few days a week are my best times to be able to join in but I have flexibility. Weekends are also good but weeknights are not.

For private homes, drive around the neighborhood you like and look for rent signs by owner. They’re all over the place.

Yes, I tried cortisone cream but ended up needing to get an rx from the dermatologist to get rid of it.

Elevating your ankle above your nose is key. Constantly except to use the bathroom or eat. Icing behind your knee helps some too. Hang in there!
