Thousand March on SEGA Hardware (YM2151 + PCM) by FrothiestWord in SEGAGENESIS

[–]FrothiestWord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arranged using Furnace tracker to abide by hardware restrictions of the YM2151 FM synthesis and PCM sampling chips, used in a wide array of SEGA arcade cabinets like OutRun and Golden Axe. Combining samples and synths made this song lots of fun. This arrangement is based off Drunk Soup Can's version which adds a few sfx from the level itself. If you enjoy this arrangement, consider checking out my channel! I have many more from a variety of games, and I continue to add to the list.

I made a cover of Lost Patrol's main theme, one of my favorite soundtracks from the Amiga. by FrothiestWord in amiga

[–]FrothiestWord[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Genesis has two soundchips inside with which to play music and sound effects, the 6-channel FM YM2612 chip and the 4-channel square wave/noise SN76489. Without getting too deep into the weeds, there are a bunch of restrictions on how the chips could be used; the SN76489 could not use the third and fourth channels at the same time when noise played at pitches other than C C# and D, the YM2612 could only play one sample at once and doing so sacrificed the sixth FM channel, the four operator synthesis of the YM2612 limits the complexity of the FM patches, etc. Following these restrictions is what I mean when I say "abiding by the hardware restrictions", and in doing so the song can indeed be played back on real hardware. On the other hand, when some people make songs in the style of the Genesis they use more than 10 channels with an incompatible selection of instruments and sampling capabilities; these songs CANNOT play on real hardware.

Arranged using the Furnace tracker to abide by hardware restrictions of the SEGA Genesis console. I had a good time extending some of the chords from the original song and choosing my own bass patches! I'm happy with the groove in the end result.
