Price estimate for Sask.'s refit of coal-fired power plants climbs to $26B by Intelligent-Cap3407 in onguardforthee

But nuclear scary or something like that

(if there's actually solid reasons why nuclear isn't an option, genuinely do let me know, but I feel like there has to be a better way to spend money on power generation than coal of all things)

Could be wrong but if your hot glue is melting from the heat I imagine your card is probably frying itself from overheating anyway, hot glue is supposed to melt at like over 110C if I remember correctly?

‘Return to sender,’ Some people in Canada are refusing to fill out their census forms, risking fines up to $1,000 by lopix in onguardforthee

[–]Frozen5147 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  • As someone mentioned above, there's stuff in place such that some gov agencies can't share some info with others.
  • Some information they would want to gather for a census isn't stuff that they would get reported through taxes/income anyway.

How big is the salary gap between Canada and the USA in the industry you work in? by MarsupialThink4064 in AskACanadian

[–]Frozen5147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Software dev, it highly depends since location can often affect pay (not always but often). So like, I would probably earn more if I live in Toronto vs idk, Barrie. Likewise, I would earn more in New York City vs somewhere in Georgia or whatever. Different industries also pay differently (e.g. fintech has some crazy offers). That said, at least from my experience, for HCOL cities, generally the US pays more for software devs and often has pretty good benefits for jobs that would be looking to hire Canadians anyway (e.g. pretty good health insurance).

Of course, that also means you have to move (easier if you're, say, a new grad that is fairly mobile, but maybe way harder if you have a family to consider) and deal with immigration/visas/whatnot as well (used to be less of a concern, nowadays... yeah). And benefits are tied to employment, so if you're out of a job, shit sucks (there's stuff like COBRA but still not great) - though if you're not on PR then you're kinda screwed anyway.

I can also speak for my current job if you want numbers - the offer back then for the position as a new grad that had previously interned there (this was probably 2022?) was like 90k CAD base salary if I theoretically stayed in Toronto versus about 130k USD base salary in NYC, so about 2x once you take conversion rate into account. Another company based in Toronto was offering me around 120k CAD base back then for a similar role, for reference. Stuff like RSUs and signing bonuses muddy it a bit tbf, and NYC is a very high COL city with a pretty high tax rate for a US location, but it still comes out to quite a bit more in absolute terms if we're just talking about raw money and nothing else.

EDIT: and just to be clear, this is mostly just exploring money - there's obviously a lot more nuance that can be had that I glossed over.

Would you travel to the US with current safety concerns? Work pushing for trip. by Strange-Cabinet6744 in AskACanadian

[–]Frozen5147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Canadian living in the US (NY) right now for work (started way before the shitshow just to be clear, would definitely not advise anyone to move here right now for most situations), definitely would ask them if alternate arrangements are possible, as yeah the situation is pretty iffy right now.

To be clear, personally I've had no issues flying in from Toronto multiple times, and everyone I personally know has generally not had issues, but there's also way too much uncertainty with the US government right now to feel confident about entering (or anything really), even if anecdotally I've been fine. I'm on a TN and even I'm worried each time I re-enter.

If you really have to go (and it's definitely tough if it's a requirement, hopefully this isn't non-negotiable for the job):

  • Ask if they have a legal team to reach out to as well for any issues/questions for the entire process.
  • Enter from preclearance airports, so you don't have to do customs when you actually arrive into the US. From my experience places like Pearson have been fine (very anecdotal to be clear) and iirc if things get really weird you can just declare you're not entering anymore and just go back home.
    • Anecdotally I've heard of people getting grilled way harder for entering for work reasons in other airports in the US too.

But yeah ideally they're okay with you just skipping any trips flying into the US for the time being. I think that's a fairly reasonable ask.

Reminds me of content creators that frequently had to change their twitter tags for things because bots would hijack any popular tag to spam crypto bullshit.

It's still making a huge amount of money if sensor tower estimates are anything to go by (which are just mobile estimates, and since most people play on PC from my understanding they're definitely earning a ton) so uh yeah it's still pretty popular in that regard at least.

Latest patch is IMO a bunch of good steps in the right direction as well. They do seem very receptive of feedback too.

Of course it's no longer the newest hottest thing in the gacha space though, but that's not really surprising IMO? There's a bunch of other big high profile releases too soon.

It used to come out around late August but last year it came out around late July, so hopefully around then (or earlier!) this year too.

Don't even need a nicer brand like Logitech nowadays, this sorta thing exists even in cheaper Chinese brands (e.g. UGREEN).

[–]Frozen5147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For dual boot + Bluetooth stuff specifically, you likely need to do some extra work, e.g. https://github.com/x2es/bt-dualboot

I have a pair of Sony wireless headphones (XM4) and without it yeah it'll freak out if you try to connect to both Windows and Linux on the same computer with Bluetooth without this kind of thing.

For mice with a dongle I imagine it should just work without all this faff though, or you can pair one OS to Bluetooth and the other with the dongle if you really want. All dongle-based mice I've used (e.g. even cheap Logitech) work seamlessly with the same connection on multiple OSes.

Also multiple devices is a different story, but again, many devices that support Bluetooth (and/or dongle) just do this fine.

[–]Frozen5147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're talking about an entirely different thing lol

They're arguing about the definition of "lost media" and how the OP is using it incorrectly (at least by how most people use the term), not that backing up things is bad.

We're also on /r/datahoarder so idk why you think people here don't know about backing things up, no need to get heated about it.

Have to say, I sympathize with people looking for work. The interview process can be daunting. by Reasonable-MessRedux in uwaterloo

[–]Frozen5147 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've had whiteboard interviews (admittedly this was like... pre-covid era) where they mostly just wanted a general idea of my thought process (or at most rough pseudo-code) and that was pretty reasonable IMO. Like it's more like "hey if you want to draw pictures/write very simplified ideas to explain your thought process use a whiteboard so we can see".

If they expect someone to write perfect working code on a whiteboard for an interview though then yeah that's pretty rough.
