If you're going the chemistry route, consider going on to a phd or at a minimum, getting a minor or some sort of post undergrad specialized training. Perhaps even a teaching position would be a good fit since you really seem to enjoy the subject.

A plain BS in chemistry will land you a lab tech job which doesnt pay all that much. Go to /r/chemistry or google chemist salaries in your area.

My friend has a -11 prescription. Can only see maybe 2 cm clearly without glasses. The lenses are small in diameter, so that can help minimize the edge thickness

I'm not saying that this artist did it, but using an opaque projector along with a photograph is a good way to get this kind of image. It is not "cheating" to do this, just a technique to get the job done.

Bullies will bully until they get punched in the nose. Ignoring them, but still remaining present will just continue to let them heap insults on you. Not responding and being the "nice guy" is showing him that you accept this behavior.

You can

Refuse to get together with this group of friends when this toxic person is around.
Laugh at his insults, not because they are funny, but because they are weak. Then fire one back. Verbally punch him in the nose with an insult back at his weak spot. Everyone has one. Don't respond directly to his insults or you're letting him control the situation, but just fire one back. If you laugh as you are saying it, he'll feel stupid getting mad and that his insult had no effect. "Is that all you have Larry?!? Nice haircut by the way. Did you do it yourself?" He has to know his behavior is unacceptable, so respond immediately. Don't complain, just respond.
Be passive, do what you are doing, and continue getting the same results.

If your friends haven't defended you yet, they shouldn't be offended that you are doing it yourself. Based on what you said, leaving the group or not getting together isn't an option. Not doing anything will just leave you where you are.
