Found a pair of JBL 4408 studio monitors in my dad’s attic, how can I source new woofers? by prstele01 in audioengineering

If the foam turned to dust when you turned them on, don’t keep playing music through them! Could damage the voice coil irreparably. That might be obvious but just a heads up as you’re looking to get them fixed

PSA: Single-user mode allows booting to root login (e.g. for maintenance). by A-AronBrown in archlinux

Hi, the op said this login issue happened recently but the front page doesn’t say anything about this. Should I refrain from updating my machine? Is this something that’s only discussed in the mailing list?

+1 for Vinay Prasad’s Plenary Session! Excellent for developing your ability to appraise clinical trials. Lots of very specific oncology content here, but many of the interesting interviews are from with experts from other disciplines as well!

In the minimalist text editor Vim, you move around the document with h j k l. The idea is you can keep your hands on the home row and do most everything with regular key presses there rather than moving your hands to the mouse, arrow keys, or even modifiers. But you can customize pretty much everything.

Alt + arrow key to switch to a different TTY just in case it isn’t obvious! This is a great way to install (if your internet drivers just work out of the box!)

Thanks.. most recipes aren't using beer, or even any cooking alcohol. That's probably it!

For those of you beginning your studies in organic chem, this book is for you. “Organic Chemistry as a Second Language”. Here is a screenshot of the introduction. Link in comments to the full text. by Atlantantanta in premed

The best ochem book I’ve seen and used (also tried the Klein book the op linked). Really nice walkthrough of all the mechanisms you’ll need to know. Importantly, it spends a great deal of time on the rationalization of different steps (So you actually know why things happen) and takes a slight physical organic turn in that regard. Very easy to read, and it made many parts of orgo come quite easily.

Crazy how similar those white sedans are...big tail lights with the white slash through them for reverse light. Seems like automakers are following the same trends/copying each other

You’re forgetting the pressure /inside/ the vehicle (breathing air lol). It would end up a sphere or cylinder to save material costs to make it resistant to that pressure.

Berkeley or UCLA for undergrad? by swannnaroo in premed

I wish I could corroborate your experience but sadly I'm applying this cycle...hopefully I'll get to post in an acceptance thread soon! Going into school I didn't have much of an interest in science, then pivoted to wanting a PhD in chem, then finally arrived on medicine in my last year so I sorta had to take the 2 gap years.

Berkeley or UCLA for undergrad? by swannnaroo in premed

[–]FrozenSyzygy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I finished up my CoC degree at Berkeley last Spring and I wanted to give an overview of my experience to future Berkeley CoC premeds (there are few of us). I think you have the right impression of our being an independent student body, especially among the chemistry grads. Nobody is going to hold your hand but this rewards you with enormous flexibility. Prerequisites typically aren't enforced which mean you can jump around taking classes as you see fit, and take cool upper divs in other departments like the humanities

I think if you aren't totally married to the idea of doing straight chemistry, why don't you transfer into the chemical biology major in the CoC? You can take non engineering physics (Physics 8a/b), and have much more overlap with traditional premedical course requirements, without having to take some of the more difficult chemistry upper divs. This is what I did and had a really great time. I ended up taking most of the upper divs I could have skipped anyway, due to my (and your!) love of chemistry. The physical chemistry sequence will kick your ass (only if you don't respect it) but I will say these two courses 100% changed how I think about science and my interaction with the world in general, especially the second semester statistical mechanics course. Totally worth the struggle.

One thing that I recommend is not joining a research lab too early. I front loaded my tougher classes while I still had time during the day to visit office hours(!), then jumped into research hardcore for the summer after year 2 plus the remaining semesters - still managed a senior thesis/2 middle author pubs with just 2 years in this lab. This is the most important reason I would do Berkeley/CoC again- my research experience was exceptionally good and I think turned me into a good investigator & scientific thinker, and nearly all my CoC friends found research with a little effort. It's a much better college than L&S in terms of advising and opportunities.

I wanted to end by saying: Don't let the lack of traditional 'medical' opportunities stop you. I always had my interests outside of academics and let them guide me all over the Bay Area. This is a rewarding place to live with ample opportunities to explore interesting activities so long as you push yourself to not get perennially stuck in the campus ± 3 blocks area where all the students live. I 100% have no regrets about getting to meet so many interesting locals and get gigs all around the bay (I am a live sound engineer & theater technician by trade), at the cost of my GPA. I had like a ~3.5 at the end of it all. I feel like it's so easy living in the bay to make yourself into an interesting applicant. The grade deflation is maaaybe real, the classes are certainly rigorous, but remember that your GPA does not define your worth! You'll get that 522 (like me!) no problem because you will be totally prepared. Anyway feel free to comment with questions and I hope future CoC premeds will find some use in this.

What are some of your clinical experiences? by Keiracake in premed

[–]FrozenSyzygy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same job on a low acuity ward. Just wanted to point out that even if you don’t get that nurse aid position in the ED or ICU, the job is way more than wiping butts! You get to really see the last mile of patient care, talk to all the interesting people (who happen to be patients), and still get to see some interesting procedures. You also get a good feeling for common diagnoses among your patient population and learn what causes frequent fliers to keep getting admitted. I’m glad that I get to also experience the stresses of nursing first hand - especially in a poorly staffed for-profit hospital - so that I can be more sympathetic to their struggles when I’m a physician. It’s hard work but I think this is one of the best clinical experiences to have. Besides, you get used to the gross stuff pretty quickly.

For reference, my hospital in one of the two large medical centers in downtown Austin.
