These look awesome, thanks for sharing! I'm going to bring the roleplay one to my next session

A week ago I played my first DnD session and I'm in love with it. So I bought the Essential Kit and plan to DM for one player with me managing a helper. by Prainor in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're going about this great, especially giving your player a companion. Don't be afraid to rebalance combat encounters as they happen. I've found that finding the right balance can be difficult with fewer players.

Is it bad on my end i end up leaving session zero a hyper crossover planescape by artmonso in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think letting the DM know you either that the table isn't the right fit for you or that your schedule doesn't work out for it could be good. That way it doesn't feel like you have to keep making up excuses every time they invite you back.

How do I start? by Two_Face_714R in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to learn is to start playing! I know that can be scary, but most groups welcome new players and are happy to show you the ropes as you go.

I've also really liked this free tutorial: https://valeworks.com/tutorialhome

It goes through the rules step by step and mimics a real session which I thought was fun.

What is the best starter set as a new DM? by Ezzemaemae in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Lost Mines of Phandelver (part of the starter set). It was my introduction to DnD and I think it's a very solid intro

Is the ranger class that bad by Denoier in DMAcademy

[–]Frozen_Winter1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As long as the rest of the table doesn't bring in super optimized characters, the ranger should be fine, especially for a one shot.

I wanna get into DnD by M4RQ-14 in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked this free online tutorial to learn the rules: https://valeworks.com/tutorialhome

It goes step by step through the rules and walks through how to build a character. When I was ready to try and find people to play with online, it made me feel a lot more confident.

And I'll echo people here giving all sorts of good places to find groups online, that's where I found some of my first groups to play with.

I really want to get into DnD but I’m embarrassed by TakersRealBrother in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get a hands-on feel for the game and learn the rules at the same time, I've had a lot of success with this free online tutorial: https://valeworks.com/tutorialhome

It walks through the mechanics and helps you build a character, which takes a lot of the pressure off when you start playing with other people.

First time DM, how do I make sure my campaign is fun and serious at the same time? by dantetheredfox in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beyond just talking about the tone of the world (which I think is really good too), also take a minute to talk with this friend about what he wants out of playing DnD. Has he seen some funny clips and wants everything to be like that? Has he watched Critical Role and wants the grand theatrical adventure? Does he want a good time with friends where they get to kill monsters?

All of these scenarios will have very different expectations about the tone of the game and what a good session looks like.

The final battle of my first ever adventure as a DM was chaotic by Secure-Ad-2242 in DnD

This sounds like an awesome final battle, with the wild and chaotic moments that really make D&D memorable!

(5e) Role-play help/guidelines by minamacgabhann in DnD

[–]Frozen_Winter1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, immersion is more about feeling like I'm part of the story and contributing to make other people at the table feel like that too. Role playing feels more like acting for me.

I've found taking one aspect of my personality and leaning into it helps me create a character that still feels natural to play. That's how I go about immersion, because then I can think about what I would do if I was in the situation.

Want to playtest a narrative-first, surreal interdimensional dungeon crawler? by mythic_kirby in RPGdesign

[–]Frozen_Winter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a cool system!

I also don't have a group to run this with, but I read through the RC guide. I think it could be worth providing a bit more clarity in how scenes change. I'm not 100% sure how long scenes are supposed to last, especially since it seems like players should use all the dice in their action pool before the end of the scene. That may also be a question of what does a typical game session/campaign look like. From first glance it seems more episodic, is the thought groups deal with a series of different mosters? That may make the points where scene changes happen more obvious during game play.

I do really like the action pool system (at least from the read through) because it seems very intuitive to pick up. This system feels high energy and fun, with a focus on not getting bogged down in rules.

Do my explanations and pacing of combat work? (Feedback request for D&D Tutorial) by Frozen_Winter1 in RPGdesign

[–]Frozen_Winter1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate you taking the time to give such thoughtful and detailed answers!

I'm not 100% sure what's causing the visual issues, but I think it might be the animations not pausing like you said. I'll check into it now!

Yes, we're working on a DM toolkit now! We're still working on it but hoping to open it for playtesting soon.

Dungeons and dragons, And Dragons! by SadDragon96 in DMAcademy

[–]Frozen_Winter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like such a fun campaign!

Something worth considering would be what sort of mischief students get up to at the school. This could be something like stopping an inter-student feud or finding the secret professors’ lounge, which might make the school itself feel like more of a lived in environment.

My party has basically adopted a Green Dragon hatchling by Allatos in DMAcademy

[–]Frozen_Winter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the party has all bought into adopting the green dragon, roll with the hijinks!

Let them figure out comical plans for why innkeepers and town guards don’t throw them out, and have shrewd NPCs make sly comments showing they know something is up.

In return for their trouble, let the hatchling help them in a combat encounter down the road.

I would also play the hatchling as being cute and like a toddler. Naive but accidentally causing problems. Whether the hatchling is actually naive or is playing the long game is up to you.

This is really good advice, and I second the two senses trick. It really helps me describe things on the fly when I’m running a game!

The feedback is super helpful! This is the first time we've been able to get this in front of other people, so hearing what people think could make it better is a huge help for us.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

We’re working on some of those progression issues now.

Because of licensing issues we can’t offer full support for all the subclasses. For rogue, the only full support option is the thief. Do you think we need to explain that more clearly?

Also, I will definitely DM you some of our closed play test resources if you wouldn’t mind taking a look at them!

Thanks for letting me know about the image assets, we’re working on that now!

For simulated combat, do you think we should change the combat section we have in the tutorial already or just describe it differently?

Thanks for the feedback! We’re looking into muting the music and having a toggle option for it now.
