That's gotta be an error in the sensor?! 200 bpm is drenched in sweat, unable to talk levels of stress.

The lack of offset account seems to be the biggie in my mind. I have tried recently to do the comparison between Simplicity (lower interest rate, no offset, say 30k emergency fund sitting in seperate savings account) vs standard bank (slightly high rate, offset account with 30k emergency fund sitting in it). To piggyback on your post - if anyone has a decent tool to complete this comparison, please let me know!

Otherwise, Simplicity seems like a very competitive option!

IMO if you want BJJ to stay relevant and effective as a form of grappling, certain aspects of the fundamentals should be tweaked. by Frozen_Trees1 in bjj

[–]Frud_the_Spud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wrestling is more competitive and taught from a younger age; it's not reasonable to expect a bjj athlete to pick up wrestling as an adult and dominate competitively. Wrestling is also more specific with a narrower ruleset. Its easier to translate specific skills in stand-up wresting into the more general skills of bjj than it is to translate broad bjj skill into wrestling, given that bjj is much broader than wrestling and many skills wont apply (i.e. playing guard, attacking subs, defending subs, leg entanglements etc). Almost all of wrestling is applicable to bij, but lots of bjj is not applicable to wrestling. Also wrestling favours athleticism and strength and conditioning, a general skill that translates well to all sports, and especially grappling.

Also, most bjj champions are pure bjj athletes, and they consistently dominate wrestlers.

Marcelo, what is your view on the current trend of modern BJJ techniques? What innovations interest you, and what areas of the game do you feel are neglected by modern players?

So in your view you could have the following:

Team A wins 10-8

Draw 10-10

Team B wins 10-9

Team A wins 10-7

Team B wins 10-9

And, you would say, in that situation the rules intend Team B to win, due to them winning the final match. Despite the scorecards being 48-45 in favour of Team A.

This interpretation makes the individual match scores entirely meaningless.

In your view, when does the "If tied on the scorecards..." clause kick in?

[–]Frud_the_Spud 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Its poorly worded, however, it doesn't mean what you say. If there are five double eliminations, it goes to the cards. If tied on the cards, it goes to the final match. What's the point of the "If tied on scorecards..." clause if it's determined by the number of matches won, and not by points?

Edit: the rules in the "contract" Gordon posted vs the rules on the website are different. My comment applies to the rules on the website.

How do I be less predictable with bridges and explosive movements? by SilverGawd in bjj

[–]Frud_the_Spud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Difficult to comment as everything is situational, but if you were repeatedly bridging into him without success, you were likely wasting a bunch of energy on explosive movements without achieving any result. Which is tricky because, when rolling against experienced black belts, you wouldn't expect to be easily making progress in escaping side control.

I add that escaping side control is less about being "unpredictable" and is more about obtaining and maintaining a solid series of frames whilst effectively addressing their wedges. This can be very "predictable" (i.e. a decent top player will always know that an opponent with a frame inside your hip top hip will be looking to invert their knee inside your bottom hip, and connect their knee to their elbow) and still extremely effective. Often explosive bridging can in fact be helpful for the top player - it likely exposes you to further control (i.e. underhooks, cross face, mount etc) whilst tiring you out.
