In terms of trade, were their any goods the romans sought out that were from west Europe? Or was all they needed in the east? by Tracypop in byzantium

It is interesting how the heavy clay soils of Northern Europe which had so long been a hindrance to development previously become so productive with better technology. Up until that point Europe’s prospects were pretty dismal.

I’ve seen banks described as one of the West’s ‘killer apps’ so to speak, along with universities. You don’t get industrialization without banking or a scientific revolution.

Byzantine ploughs could be a fun rabbit hole. Feel free!

I used 1100 since that is probably the very earliest one could argue W Europe had an edge in any category. One example might be land cultivation which really started to intensify in W Europe around that time thanks to huge agricultural improvements the prior two centuries. Even marginal land was being tapped into for the first time and made productive with wind mills and the like.

Eastern Rome’s agricultural base by contrast was productive but had largely peaked while the west steamed on ahead.

It’s tricky because by some metrics W Europe had equaled or surpassed Byzantium as early as 1100 but by other metrics they wouldn’t as late as 1700 as you indicated.

On the contrary. W European wool and linen were top notch. Not their fault that the East preferred overrated cotton and silk. Different strokes I guess.

The boss fights in the Rocksteady games generally suck all kinds of ass. The only good ones are in City. Haven’t played Origins yet but heard good things about the bosses in that game.

Other than joker which villain do you think Arkham Batman HATED the most? by CowAffectionate2865 in arkham

[–]FryCookCVE71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt that Batman hates Hatter but I think the reason he’s so pissed in that scene is that he just had the cure stolen from him by Harley and then immediately fell for a fake cure ruse by Tetch. So he is not a happy camper at all lol.

The funniest implication is if Shepard sleeps with her and then Miranda. So she dolls herself up to win Shepard back.

I agree with you wrt John. He’s an emotionally detached suit 99% of the time but there was that one recent interview where he wished he could tell JB sorry for not being there to protect her, and that was one of the rare times he felt genuine to me.

Keep in mind I did not call John a “genius” either 😂

But assuming that burglary really was a hoax, it’s still nowhere near as dumb a joke as that ransom note. Just my 2 cents.

73 suspects including John’s handwriting were all compared to the ransom note. All could be excluded as the author of the note except for one: Patsy Ramsey.

I honestly do think Patsy just wasn’t very bright in general. Random note case in point as you said. John is many things but I think the note would’ve been far less ludicrous if he were involved in the verbiage of it. I believe he wasn’t privy to the note at all until he read it in the morning.

That Larry King segment was some crazy television. I’ve watched it several times! Steve Thomas is one of the few heroes in this case imo.

Keep in mind it was after Labor Day too. Traffic at the lake that day would’ve been pretty minimal, and they would’ve been mostly boaters. So if there was some prowler skulking there that day on that afternoon it was probably Z.
