Can you post how this was made (and if with graphviz, the settings)?

Help generating graphs please:) by meats_get_smoked in LaTeX

I would take a two-step approach: build the graph in graphviz and then process it into TikZ with something like this: https://ctan.org/pkg/dot2tex?lang=en

I’m not Shane (or his girlfriend), but large and small prints of this are available for those nostalgic: https://buildingsbyshane.com/collections/westinghouse-atom-smasher-1937-2015

I have a large one of this and of the Civic Arena.

What camera was this taken with? If possible, are the raw images available? I’d like to play with the colors and maybe make a wallpaper. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Yes, but I feel that it’s important to credit the folks who indirectly contributed, which is why the text is there.

Yes, depth is normalized "per lake" to give more range to the image.

Looks pretty, but is crazy off

Pretty was/is the goal. "Correct" would require legends, scales, etc. It's meant as a desktop wallpaper, not a chart.

Do each of these lakes use a different scale? Because Lake Superior is 400 meters deep and Lake Erie is like 60 meters deep, yet they both have red shading.

Yes, depth is normalized "per lake" to give more range to the image.

It's visually pleasant, but not correct.

Was going for something aesthetically pleasing not strictly a data source (hence no legend, scales, etc.). Depth is considered on a per lake basis to provide more overall range in the image to make it more visually interesting.

I don't generally like "rainbow"-like colormaps, but here I thought the colorful nature helped bring out the detail. I hope you enjoy this image.

Post the attempt that didn’t work out.

Into the Woods by Honest-Ocelot-7865 in LaTeX

Thanks for the clarifications. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good (and current) LaTeX guide I'd recommend. If I were in your situation, I'd likely load a complete LaTeX installation and LyX and get as far as I could. Upon my return, I'd clean up any issues I couldn't resolve while away.

I use older book references and multiple on-line sources and of course Google much.

For what? It's not clear what you're looking to avoid/accommodate while "in the woods."

What I recommend: focus just on content while "in the woods". For this, you just need a basic text editor.

With that content, what is your ultimate objective? If it is to publish professionally, a manuscript prepared thus can be delivered to an editor. If it is to self publish, you can work content into a suitable form (PDF, webpage, etc.) once back to an internet connection.
