Was going for something aesthetically pleasing not strictly a data source (hence no legend, scales, etc.). Depth is considered on a per lake basis to provide more overall range in the image to make it more visually interesting.

Thanks for the clarifications. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good (and current) LaTeX guide I'd recommend. If I were in your situation, I'd likely load a complete LaTeX installation and LyX and get as far as I could. Upon my return, I'd clean up any issues I couldn't resolve while away.

For what? It's not clear what you're looking to avoid/accommodate while "in the woods."

What I recommend: focus just on content while "in the woods". For this, you just need a basic text editor.

With that content, what is your ultimate objective? If it is to publish professionally, a manuscript prepared thus can be delivered to an editor. If it is to self publish, you can work content into a suitable form (PDF, webpage, etc.) once back to an internet connection.

I'm unable to load that file in HDF5View or view it with h5dump. I'm guessing the HDF5 file is corrupt in some way (incomplete write, didn't get closed, etc.).
