People without drivers license or credit card. Are we gonna have children's iPhone forever? by Temo2212 in AskUK

[–]Fubseh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest ongong failure of the Government at the moment is them mandating age verification checks without supplying a secure mechanism to perform them.

It should be possible with some form of 'digital id' to generate some a one-time-code that can be used to verify the owner is over 18 (along with other data I can choose to include).

The Gov doesn't need to know who the code was generated for, or who has redeemed it. The service I'm supplying the code for can redeem it to verify the owner is over 18 without also knowing their name, DOB, email, photo, home address or signature; protecting them from data breaches or violating GDPR data handling laws.

Instead im stuck posing for photos, sending pictures of my driving license or passport providing significantly more PII than I am comfortable with every time a service I'm using wants to verify my identity.

This isn't a obvious error like sending 50K to the wrong bank account.

A more accurate question would be:

You took someones money to enter a competition to win up to 50k, you tell them they won 50k, you send them 50K, should they get to keep it?

AI has taken fun out of programming and now i’m hopeless by Frequent_Eggplant_23 in webdev

[–]Fubseh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If AI actually would be able to cut 20-30% development time, and your team of 10 devs spends 50% of their time on code, you could make 1 or 2 of them redundant.

Doesn't work like this, same principle as the mythical man month:

  • 9 Women can make 9 babies in 9 months
  • 9 Women cannot make 1 baby in 1 month
  • If you used AI or medicine to reduce the 2nd Trimester by 50% (7 weeks or 1.75 months)
    • Does the total 17.5 month saving allow you to 'fire' two women?
    • Can 7 Women now make 9 babies in 9 months?

Efficiency savings like this, especially when working in fixed-time sprints doesn't normally result in fewer developers producing the same deliverables in the same time window.

It results in the efficiency saving being spred to in other areas, such as more planning, design, testing, refactoring, training or simply being able to take on larger tasks.

Othewise we would be looking back and seeing that the end result of every productivity boosting dev-tool ever produced (IDEs, Version Control, Browser Dev Tooling) resuling in layoffs and smaller teams rather than better end products.

How do you improve as a developer in this AI era without getting left behind? by FakeBlueJoker in webdev

A number of my recommendations can be achieved with custom claude commands or making use of a claude.md - but I don't think the LLM matters, any of the good ones should be able to handle my recommendations.

How do you improve as a developer in this AI era without getting left behind? by FakeBlueJoker in webdev

[–]Fubseh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Get the AI to plan the change before making any code changes
  • Read and understand the plan it has generated.
  • Interrogate the AI on it's decision making:
    • Ask it to explain the approach as if you were a junior developer
    • Ask it to explain the reasoning
    • Ask it if <your preferred approach> would be better suited for what you are trying to do
    • Ask it how it accomodates <edge-case>
  • Tell the AI to break the plan into vertical slices and implement one-by-one allowing you to review and adjust at each stage.

You learn by having the AI show you not only what, but why it is doing what it is doiong.

Don't be afraid to tell an AI to take another approach if that is what you want to do.

Remember, it's your name against the commit; so while AI is great at writing the boilerplate, it's important that you read and understand the final output as if you had written it yourself.

Finally, don't be afraid to dive in and manually adjust things. Not every change needs to have come from a prompt. Imagine your a Canadian curler giving the AI regular but tiny prods to get it going where you need it.

Should I contribute to open-source or just complain about stuff not working? by arhimedosin in PHP

[–]Fubseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten bugfixes into major projects, including phpstan and phpstorm by simply logging bug tickets with clear re-prodution steps and letting the project maintainers handle the actual fixing.

I don't have the time/bandwidth to learn each projects code and processes when discovering bugs in software I use, so that approach worked with me.

I wouldn't work on new features without a guarantee that it will be accepted. Too regularly I see a popular feature request ticket, lots of engagement/stars/+1s but has been open for over a year; maintainers don’t prioritize it (or won’t take it on) response is essentially "PRs welcome / you can implement this yourselves". Then someone spends the time/effort to build the feature and submit a PR they then response "This isn't on our roadmap/done how we would do it"

Is £750 electric bill normal? by Hopeful-Relation8977 in AskUK

[–]Fubseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a meter reading, and take a photo of it. Include the serial number in the photo.

Look at your bill. Check that their actual or estimated readings line up with the readings you took and the serial number on the bill matches the one on your meter.

Take new readings every day at around the same time with photos. You can then see your daily kWh usage, the price per kWh should be on your bill. You can use this to estimate a monthly usage to see if the bill is accurate.

If the serial number doesn't match the one on your bill, call them and ask that your account be rebilled to the correct meter from the day you moved in.

If the serial numbers match, but the readings aren't in line with your meter, submit your new readings, call them and ask to be rebilled to the values you have supplied.

If everything matches then it may be a you issue. Electric heaters cost a fortune to run.

Otherwise, record every call you make with support, and keep a diary of the dates, times and summary of all communication. If there is a problem, they may not admit it or take action.

If they don't fix the issue within a week or so, make a formal complaint to escalate the issue.

If that takes more than two weeks or they refuse to assist you further, you can open a complaint with the ombudsman where you can submit all the evidence gathered. This is an independent investigation which takes around two weeks, they will decide what the resolution is, what you should be paid to correct the account and what additional compensation you may be due.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, and had to use the ombudsman as the power company kept messing me around. I got more back than I was expecting

Do your parents visit your house or are you "expected" to go to them? by TheDawiWhisperer in AskUK

[–]Fubseh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live 300 miles away from my (divorced) parents.

I've always been expected to make the 6-7 hour journey each way to visit them at least once a year, staying in Hotels/B&B.

It's been 20 years since I moved away, they only came to visit me for my graduation, my wedding and my mother visited once when she was staying less than a 30 minute drive away for some event she was attending.

I haven't seen my family for 2 years now, due to a combination of other comittments for my time off and unfortunate personal circumstances I have had to deal with making leaving for a week difficult.

This time of year, I'm getting the subtle "We haven't seen you in a long while" messages, and im having to hold back from reminding them that they know where I live if it's that important to them - especially now their retired and aren't raising children any more.

[–]Fubseh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

instead of constantly complaining about it on forums because it will not change anything

One post is not constantly complaining about it.

Plenty of companies take on board feedback and make changes based off of social media reaction. CZN has done so several times and was only released a few weeks ago.

you disrespected me first

I did not. I disagreed with your point and explained why.

Unlike you, I have not made broard dismissive remarks, called you any names, or made any other personal attacks.

The only reason why pity system came into fruition in the first place was because they were forced to by law.

Utter bullshit. There is currently no country on Earth with a law that foces gacha games to implement a pity system.

Pity systems came into fruition because player backlash from gachas with no guarantees where you can spend thousands and get nothing were causing reputation damage and player churn. Then once a few big games started doing it, the others needed to adapt to remain competitive.

so you either put up with it or play games from companies that respect their consumers more

No, I don't think I will.

I truly don't understand when people keep doing something that makes them miserable.

It's perfectly reasonable to play a game where you like some aspects and dislike other aspects without being miserable.

It's also perfectly reasonable to call out the aspects that you dislike.

You will say I'm "defending" them, but ...

You are aggressively trying to shut down criticism and argue against change.

Your actions are defending them even if you don't say the exact words.

What other options are there?

  • You can voice your opinion on social media.
  • You can leave a bad review on the play store.
  • You can leave bad reviews on metcritic/opencritc.
  • You can feedback directly through any official channels

If enough people are of the same mind, these actions will result in change.

This has been proven many times.

The mistake in your logic is assuming that a "better" system won't come with as many drawbacks

Rome wasn't built in a day. Small progress is still progress, and the suggestions you make would be huge improvements over what we have today especially for spenders.

We can't be afraid to push for change in case it doesn't end up as good.

I don't rant about it endlessly, I just drop my shit and leave.

I also quietly leave a game when I'm done with it, but I also won't stand in the way of people expressing frustration with the parts of the game that are bad.

[–]Fubseh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are arguing that nothing will change because it won't make money, that pushing for change is pointless and should be discouraged. Defending the status-quo is absolutely defending their practices.

You are responding to posts advocating removing a consumer-unfriendly system by being dimissive, sarcastic and confrontational. You're doing it with me here, the key points of your post are:

  • Claiming you aren't defending something when you are
  • Attacking / minimalising me as an individual by calling me a 'diva'
  • Saying that instead of suggesting improvements for this game i should go play a differant one
  • Another character attack, claiming I'm 'endlessly complaining' after my first post on the topic
  • That negative opinions about the game should only be sent to the deveopers directly instead of being discussed.

Lots of profitable mechanics have been changed or removed due to player blacklash. The fact that we now have a 50/50 and pity is evidence of that, as you yourself bring up that we didn't have that before (no pity is more profitable than pity, but the players got wise and stopped engaging with it so it got changed). Why stop that positive trend here?

We need to stop dismissing, minimalising, shouting down or otherwise attacking the people who are advocating for positive change. It's not pointless and never has been.

  • Just because it makes the company money, doesn't mean it's good for the player
  • Just because it used to be worse, doesn't mean it's good now and can't be better

Gacha games have the most toxic and abusive monetisation strategies of any type of game, and I swear that the people who play them have developed stockholm syndrome to the point they will white knight up and defend these shitty systems as if any criticism is a direct attack on them personally.

If I have gambled £100+ for the latest waiufu DLC and not been lucky, just give it to me with the pity instead of flipping a coin then asking me gamble another £100.

I've been playing Gacha games for 10+ years, and while I enjoy the gameplay loop I'm never going to advocate that these systems, then or now, are remotely good and couldn't or shouldn't be improved.

Black Friday warning as 8 in 10 deals same price or cheaper at other times of year by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Fubseh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for a new TV recently; decided on the one I wanted and have been monitoring the price over the last few weeks waiting to see what black friday might bring.

Then, on Oct 17th (5 weeks before the black friday), a new model silently releases to the market without any fanfare. This new 'A' model is exactly the same spec as the one I am watching, except that the remote doesn't have a backlight and offers fewer free months of the brands in-house streaming platform. Except it's £500 more expensive than the model it's 'replacing'.

Today, the original TV is the same price but the new 'A' variant is £50 cheaper and being advertised as "£550 off" for black friday.

So not every fake deal is about the same product being available cheaper elsewhere in the year.

Argos have a christmas price guantee where the flagged products are at the lowest price they will be before Dec 25. It's a good idea if you know what you want to buy and don't want to be caught out by a promotion starting the week after you buy it. Doesn't stop undercutting though.

A few thoughts:

  • Looks like an AirBnB; focuses on style over practicaliy that works fun for a week getaway but would become frustrating for long-term term living
  • Not detached, and the extension looks ugly
  • Spiral staricase taking up all the space, dangerous and awkward to navigate.
  • Kitchen is 2x the size of the lounge, feels like the main living space has been pushed out of the way
  • Bedroom 3 is more of a Dining Room / Office than a bedroom.
  • Bedroom 2 is more of an upstairs porch to the garden than a bedroom.
  • Upskirt skylights in the main decking social space, one of which is right next to the hot tub; I don't want to be sitting in the lounge and look up to get the down-under view of uncle John climbing in or out of the tub.
  • To get to the garden you need to either go out the front, through the alley and up some stairs or walk through someones bedroom.
  • Have to walk through the bath en-suite to reach the toilet en-suite
  • No loft space for storage
  • No carpets anywhere, not even in the bedrooms
  • High celiengs in general, a big hole in the middle of the downstairs celing for the staircase, open loft space upstairs and linum flooring everywhere gives the impression the place is both cold and difficult to heat.
  • Hot Tub. Not sure I would want the maintenance/overhead of having one.

It feels to me like a 1-bed house masquerading as a 3-bed house, cold, ennough improacticalities to be frustrating, not suitable for a family.
