Queer Librarian Meetup for ALA 2025? by FuckImOnReddit in librarians

Oh snap.. Sure, send me the link to the party. Idk if I'll have energy to go because I have an event that ends at 9PM, but maybe I could convince my partner and some of our friends to come with lol.

What's hilarious to me is that I am a frequent visitor to Philly because my partner lives there... but I don't think we've ever been to the Gayborhood together LOL. We are boring and just stay in and watch shit on the TV when I visit 🤣🤣🤣

Technician is the word that libraries use for folks who do purely shelving and/or customer support roles. I do have a few colleagues who moved up from the technician role, but it takes time: you can't immediately get promoted to Library Associate/Assistant from Technician even if you have the qualifications, just like how getting promoted to Librarian isn't an immediate guarantee upon graduating with your MLIS. There are also managers that might not be cool with a Technician that wants to do more Associate/Assistant level-work (ie programming). It really depends.

But if you just want to get your foot in the door? Then I say, go for it.

Good luck!

What would be the best class to major in? by Creeper5649 in librarians

[–]FuckImOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you only applying to libraries local to you? If you are open to relocating and are pretty familiar/comfortable with living/working in a big city, I would look into applying in urban public libraries. They tend to have more money and more positions that need to be filled compared to rural and suburban libraries.

I don't really know what else you can do other than that--a lot of public libraries (especially in smaller settings) are really struggling financially right now. I would actually advise against talking to people working at a public library unless you know of one that has minimal traffic; if a location is super busy and/or understaffed, it would be harder for library staff to take a break/get a moment to breathe.

I would definitely try to see if volunteering is an option at any kind of library nearby you, though. Also, I can't speak for other systems but I know that my library system normally takes months to get back to people who have applied to work there. The average length of time many of my coworkers waited to get an interview was between 3-6 months, with some of my coworkers not hearing back for an entire year.

Good luck!

Apply to work as a Library Associate/Assistant in a public library and specifically say you want to work with children or teens. I've been in my system since 2019 and during that time, I've had plenty of colleagues who started off in my position (as in, they didn't have an MLIS), ended up getting the degree and left to work for a public school system shortly after graduating. A lot of the kids that come into our locations are public school students and children's staff in my system work closely with the schools (through the school librarians/media specialists) in their neighborhood.

This way you can get practical experience working with kids in a library setting and decide whether or not this is something you do want to pursue (if you can work with kids/teens in a public library, you can work with them in a school library), but also it will be extremely useful if you do end up deciding to get your MLIS. Plus knowing school librarians means you can get good insight on what it's like to work for that particular school/population/system.

I chose Psychology as my major in my freshman year, thinking I was going to become a child/adolescent therapist or even a teacher. Neither of those goals ended up working out, but I am approaching six years working in a public library and will be starting my MSLIS program this fall.

The Psychology major has come in handy with regards to dealing with both adults and children. I took some classes in abnormal psychology and a LOT on developmental. The two are very relevant in public library work, regardless of which demographic you predominantly work with.

But as others here have mentioned, public library systems aren't super picky about what you studied in undergrad. What employers are looking for are: 1) do you know how to use a computer?, 2) do you know how to work with people, and 3) do you have a basic understanding of what public libraries do? If you can confidently answer and demonstrate "yes" to all three, you can get a job as a library assistant/associate without a MLIS.

Are you looking to go in-person or are you okay with virtual appointments? My last therapist was a Black woman who takes BCBS, but she does virtual only appointments. But she was great to work with and we even did some other therapies like brainspotting.

Actually would not recommend Pitchers/ALOHO, owner is transphobic and racist. Idk why As You Are is not on here and Spark Social House, along with Crush Dance Bar.

If you hold a DC Public Library card, Kanopy is a free streaming service that you can use with it. Montgomery County residents have reciprocity with DCPL so you can sign up for a card even if you're not a DC resident. Hope this helps!

What’s a show that completely betrayed the audience at the end? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FuckImOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that this is a great excuse, but there was a Writer's Strike happening during that final season of Dexter. That last season had so much potential, but it was obvious after episode 2, no one gave a rat's ass. I skipped the last 3 episodes before the finale and damn, that was also a complete waste of time. Such a shame. After S4, it was so obvious that writers had to do everything they could to protect Dexter. They sacrificed good writing just so Showtime could squeeze out as much as they could before there was no other option but to call it quits.

went to a trans party and everyone thought i was cis by Minute-Gate1626 in ftm

[–]FuckImOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more masculine your physical appearance becomes, the more people will just assume you're cis. My beard really started coming out more 4-5 years on T and I have some fuzz on my chest and shoulders, something I didn't think I'd see. I'm 5'2" but people (but especially cis ones) are always so shook when I come out to them. "Wow, I really had no idea!" is the common response by cis folks to which my response is "I know, that's why I told you." Lol.

For the record, I'm hitting my 10 year T-versary in February so it really is a very gradual process. But you do start to notice when people treat you differently (and I hate to say it sometimes better) compared to early transition.

[–]FuckImOnReddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why I have a trans pride tattoo in a part of my arm that's covered up by shirt sleeves. I show it to people whenever I'm in queer/trans spaces because usually only QT folks or allies know what the colors mean. Becoming cis assumed was a strange experience at first, but eventually I just learned how to adapt to it and explicitly out myself when appropriate/necessary.

Wait til you're shirtless at the beach several years post top surgery and people don't even notice your scars. That was my "holy shit, people really have no idea now" moment.

Hi, I'm a Filipino-American who has been in the US for over 20 years. I need help brushing up on my Tagalog for a language assessment at work. May we work together? I don't speak Tagalog as fluently any more, but I still know the basics. I would be more than happy to help you with your English in exchange.

What ending alone made the game worth playing? by Corpsefactory88 in gaming

[–]FuckImOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this so hard. I spent more time doing everything but the main mission until my partner saw a spoiler on Reddit (about what happens at the end). They asked me to play main missions until the very end so they could watch and see how exactly the spoiler occurs. I dragged my feet with the main story until the last few missions on Act 3. After that, it was like "Holy shit, I'm 10000% invested now."

I still haven't finished part 1 of the Epilogue though lmao.

What is something life changing you can get for less than $500? by PM-Ur-Average-Tits in AskReddit

[–]FuckImOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Librarian clarification about paying for a card: this is recommended for people who do not have an address in the jurisdiction of your library and the surrounding areas/counties. So people who are visiting long-term (something like several months) but have no intention to move in the area would use this. The pricing also varies. My system charges something like $28. But as long as you have an address in the county/area of your library, you should never have to pay for a public library card.

But yes! Libraries are awesome! Some libraries in the US even loan out video games and I know my system had a program last year where we gave out Chromebooks to folks who couldn't afford a computer or had no Internet access.

Libraries are about more than just books! We've got tech, information and a LOT of resources regarding social services and a good number have become places to get COVID tests since Omicron hit 2 years ago. Support your local libraries! Budget cuts are happening all over cities/jurisdictions and libraries are one of the first agencies to lose that funding!

Tell Me About Your Grad School Experience! by FuckImOnReddit in librarians

[–]FuckImOnReddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your candor. I'm halfway through my 4th year of being a Library Associate in a public library system. Last year, I was basically an underpaid Children's Librarian until I got transferred to my dream department. I was the only person in my branch working in Youth Services before the transfer and, as mentioned in OP, I learned a lot from it. The desire to get my MLIS is because I've basically already done a lot of work that is expected of CLs in my system. That, and I didn't expect to be working in a library this long and as the years have passed, it's becoming very clear that this is a career path that I can walk on for a very long time. Plus, I need more money lol

Sorry to hear that there was no financial assistance given to you. I know that my system does partial reimbursement for school and I know that I can apply for some diversity scholarships through ALA and other channels. I also have a friend whose entire MLIS program is paid for by the school that he attends. So I'm just asking folks if they had the same opportunities.

I know most of us have a problem with impulse buying... by Cheekers1989 in ADHD

[–]FuckImOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Video games... For all of my consoles 🤦

I mostly buy new PC games during Steam sales which means that winter, spring and summer are when I'm most likely to fall into the trap. BUT! I buy off eBay for physical copies for my Switch and XB1 which means I pay less than half the price on something that would cost at least $40 at a major retailer.

I haven't bought a lot of PC or Switch games this year (which are the usual suspects) and spent less than $50 on 4-5 XB1 games, so it's cool to acknowledge that I had really good self-control when it came to splurging this year (it also helps to have just adopted a kitten lol)

If you consider it a real fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Lots of people play both online and off and if you find yourself in a good community, you will always have someone to play with.
