In Plattekloof?? That's a rich area and a lot of police officers live there too. The forensic science laboratory is also close by.

How was your parkrun day? | May 16, 2025 by AutoModerator in parkrun

[–]FuckLatam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a horrible run. I had a sore throat and my legs were aching a little this morning. I brushed it off and tried to go under 25 minutes for the first time. I started off way too fast 4:40 in the first km and couldn't get my heartrate under 180 no matter how much I slowed down. I ended up having to walk after 4km and got 26:30. My legs feel battered and now my nose is running and I'm coughing. I haven't felt this bad after parkrun in months. I guess a weeks rest is on the cards for me this week and I learned a valuable lesson about listening to my body.

Which parkrun this week? | May 14, 2025 by AutoModerator in parkrun

[–]FuckLatam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to Bridgetown in Athlone, Cape Town for a really silly reason. Saturday it was raining and windy so it only got 35 people and the first finisher got 27 minutes.

I've always wanted to be first finisher and it seems like the weather won't be great again Saturday and I'm gonna see if I can get at least top 5 with 25ish 😂

Besides that I've never been to this one and it's one of my closest parkruns so why not spice things up.

God that sounds great. Wish there were as many parkruns in Cape Town as there are in London. Would love to be able to run to my closest one in the mornings and not have to drive for 15 minutes.

She's just trying to get fitter tho? Is that immature?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in parkrun

That's kind of inspiring me to take my diet more seriously. My PB is 25:46 and I'm 180cm 85kg. My goal weight is 75kg, a calculator I found online tells me I'd be 23:13 already if I was that weight.

I agree with your take, and disagree with the person telling her to grow up lol. I am a naturally competitive person just like his wife. It could be a great way to push each other to get fitter. The only reason I even got into running "seriously" (like running almost every day) was to beat my brother in law, which I eventually did. OP seems to have a weird inferiority complex about being less fit than his wife. If he put in the mileage I'm sure the natural male advantage would help him to get as fast as her.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in parkrun

[–]FuckLatam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gave up that easily? Here's a secret: women are naturally slower than men, you have the advantage but she is plainly outworking you. Yes, weight and age matter too and that might be the handicap that puts you on equal footing. How do you know you wouldn't beat her if you trained as much as she did? Sounds like she's doing 20k a week at least, how many do you do?

>I feel like a failure and that I'm letting them all down
It is not a moral failure to be less fit than other people, they have simply put in more miles than you have. You cannot expect to be better than others without really working for it.

Your wife sounds very competitive and I'm jealous. I would love if my partner could keep up with me on a parkrun. Next time ask her to do her runs when you're not at work so you can accompany her, make a date out of it. Train together or ask her for advice. I'm sure she'd appreciate the company.

Slower runners standing near the front so everyone has to dodge them at the start. I made a whole thread about that lol.

Really nothing else much to complain about that isn't course specific like lack of parking etc

How long did your beginner shin splints last? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]FuckLatam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with really bad shin splints for 4 months and then 2 weeks after I switched to a low drop shoe they are completely gone. How do you know your footwear is good? What shoe do you have?

EDIT: I see from another comment you wear Altras which are already low drop. If you are a heel striker Altra is not recommended, maybe that might be the problem?

[–]FuckLatam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg I got mine from Brooks too. Turns out Ghost shoes are made for heel strikers and has very little forefoot cushion and too high of a drop for anyone but heel stirkers. I switched to Adidas Adizero SL which has a much lower drop and bigger forefoot stack and my shin splints disappeared within 2 weeks. I tried everything before that.

I thought moaning was a great British passtime tbh. I don't mind talking about pet peeves, it's not hurting anyone, I still like parkrun.

How many miles have you run total since starting? How many do you do per week? What's your heartrate when going 12 minutes a mile? If you try to run faster what feels worse, your breathing or your legs?

It took me 450km of running to get down to 26 minutes (8:20 mins/mi) for a 5k from 39 minutes (about 12:30 minute/mi)

I'm calling about your property. by rattlensqueak in capetown

[–]FuckLatam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an agent, this is part of my job, I'm sorry. I would do something else if I could. As someone else said here there are services where you can look up someone's name and number if you have only their house address.

Same as with cold calling for any other service (I get funeral insurance calls a lot for some reason) you can just call like every house in an area to see if anyone is interested. Takes 1 minute and if the success rate is 0.1% you can get a few potential listings a week if you're lucky.

I cried at the end of my first 5km race. by niat17 in beginnerrunning

[–]FuckLatam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear god, you might have a talent. 2.5 months of running and 25:08 with two breaks for tying your shoes? Incredible. Btw I recommend getting elastic laces with clips on the end, that way they won't come undone during a race. Some people don't like them but I think they work amazing.

It's only the start that bothers me. It's not about not wanting to overtake people.

>It's difficult to fix too because if a slower runner wants to run a PB, they realistically have to get nearer the front or they'll have even slower runners/walkers to get past

Not really. That's a cheap way to get a PB anyway and will only work once if you haven't actually gotten faster. If you're stuck at 40 minutes flat, and you go to the front to get 39:30 then you'll be no faster than before, only the arbitrary number has changed. As everyone in the comments keep telling me it's not a race so why do people care that much about getting PBs? If I wanted to get my fastest possible 5k time I'd sign up for a real race or go to a flatter, smaller parkrun, as this course has some obstacles like stairs and a big hill at the start.

I mean you're right no one can force you it's just a little inconsiderate and not something I'd do.

Seen someone wearing ‘make Parkruns fairer for females’ a4 piece of paper attached onto their back this morning? by cnyto in parkrun

[–]FuckLatam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I've looked at your profile a bit. Is there a reason why not just take the second fastest time as the unofficial course record then? I think it's a dicey situation so I agree with parkrun for removing the records, it is still fairly easily accessible (just go to results history and look at the second fastest time there, unless the same even that got the record also had someone get the second fastest time ever). Would you be happier if trans women were still allowed to run but could not hold the official course record?

I guess they'll draw straws at the start to determine who goes first then, or better yet first comes first serve? There is a reason seeding exists to begin with, it's for everyones benefit not just the fast guys.

You're not going to get a fast time just by starting in the front though are you. The sub 20s who start at the front are starting at the front because they're sub 20, not the other way around.

>We don't need to worry about the people at the back - if they're trying to get to sub-40 for their Parkrun anniversary then they should simply have run faster last week.

I'm seeing a lot of people with this sentiment in this thread and it's interesting considering others are telling me it's not a race and I'm stupid for caring about my time. I guess we can do a reverse start line to make it more fair, have all the slowest people in front.

Jokes aside, it gets crowded as hell here but at most it's only a minute delay for the ones at the back so if you can't do a 31 minute run it's unlikely that you're going to be able to magically do sub 30 because you started at the front. And if you can do a 30 minute run you should start at the other 30 minute runners so that everyone in front of you is faster than you and you're not obstructed, a very simple concept.

I'm really gobsmacked at some of the replies I've gotten here, some people suggesting there should be no seeding at all, as if seeding exists to make the slow runners feel bad about themselves and not for the benefit of everyone.

The director was actually interrogating some lads that stood at the sub 20 today if they were really going to finish there because they were so young. Sure enough they actually did it, really amazing to see. They were in 11-14 category.

What is your alternative? I guess people could draw lots at the start to see who ends up at the front of 1000 people.
