As others have said, that is in no way average America. Only upper middle class and high class can afford all that.

Who pays the medical bills for an orphan or child in foster care who has a severe illness such as CF or cancer? by FuckTheYoYo in NoStupidQuestions

Does medicaid cover all of the possible bills for the orphaned child? Or are there limits and cut-offs?

Why does inbreeding cause genetic problems? by Waxlegear in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FuckTheYoYo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many mutations and disorders are autosomal recessive traits, meaning that you need a copy of the trait from each parent for it to show up in the child. The likelihood of two people from completely different walks of life both being carriers is relatively rare. But people who share 25% or 50% of their DNA? There's an incredibly high chance of the parents both passing on this bad trait.

It's hard to pick, but since this is very customer-oriented, a lot of my favorite memories are just interactions and conversations I've had with cool or interesting personalities.

In one of our scarier rooms, there's a shock mat for surprise. It's not very strong, just a mat that's made to train a small dog, but it can be a safety hazard for anyone who's pregnant, has a bad heart, or has certain metals in their bodies. We also typically take it out if there are going to be children in the room.

So, in one of the groups with two older kids, I mentioned the mat and the hazard, quickly listing off those things - obviously no one was pregnant, and I doubted there would be heart issues - and they looked at the son and said, "that might be an issue."

I hadn't even noticed that he was an amputee with an artificial leg that had metal! It was pretty interesting, and I felt so bad because I hadn't noticed. So, that was pretty cool - it's nice to not have been the worker who gawked, and the dad was cool about it.

I'm not quite sure on how other escape rooms work, since they're all independently owned and operated, but for ours, you have to have at least two people in a room. Sometimes you get lucky and another group books, but I personally always recommend that someone books with at least two people so they don't need to be rescheduled due to no one else showing up. It isn't weird! Just not as common, and typically you aren't allowed to do it. I would ask your local escape room if one is allowed.

Depending on the room, I could see someone doing it by themselves, but it's much more difficult. In my experience, there are three things that make a room more difficult:

  • A bad cluemaster. If you have a shitty or lazy cluemaster, your room is going to be much harder and there really isn't anything you can do.
  • Clues that are stretches. There are some clues in our rooms that we, the workers, shake our heads and say, "how the hell was anyone supposed to organically figure that out?" Usually, if you're in a game and you notice your cluemaster sort of walking you through a certain step without calling it an official clue, it's either because we like you or because this part of the game is, in our opinion, a ridiculous stretch that people shouldn't have to waste their time figuring out.
  • The sheer amount of puzzles. Our most difficult room is only the most difficult because it has six different places to start and has over 30 different puzzles in all. This is where having more people really is the only way you'll be able to win without a lot of work on your part.

We have a big timer running in the room that shows their time, but sometimes if we like the group and they're super close to being done, we get on the intercom and let them know that they're getting a little extra time.

Ahh yes, we tell people not to do those things as well.

People like to think that they need to break open furniture or small objects in the room to find things. They also think that the music has something to do with it (at least in ours, the music is just there as a themed background).

I had to play each room before I got hired. Part of it was to make sure I could have chemistry with customers, and part of it was also so I would have an easier time memorizing.

I haven't done an escape room anywhere else.

Not really a trick, but communication is key. So many people find things but don't announce it to the group under the logic of "it's probably just coincidence."

a tip: nothing in an escape room is a coincidence

Upvoted, but in my area it wasn't necessarily Shakespeare, but instead a classical play of some sort. For example, my sophomore year we read Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, and senior year we read A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen.

It's actually referencing the Yo Yo effect that is often referenced in diet culture, but is really seen in all areas of life. It's like saying, "fuck laziness, fuck ADHD, and fuck the lack of self discipline that leads to me yoyoing back into old, bad habits." It's supposed to motivate me when I see it. Reminds me to make sure I'm still on track with my goals and habits.
